I've always wondered what it would be like to go to Spain. The Philippines was under Spanish rule for 333 years so the Spanish influence is big. So big that we think it's our own. Spanish words are part of language and I was surprised when I studied Spanish that words that I thought were Filipino were actually Spanish just spelled the way Filipinos spell. Like how we ask "How are you?". We say "Kumusta?" and only later in life did I realize that it came from the Spanish phrase "Como esta?". Made me wonder how pre-colonial Filipinos greeted each other before we had the word Kumusta. I landed in Barcelona and had no idea how to get out of the airport. I saw a group of Filipinos and asked them. It seemed that there were ... read more

I took spring cleaning to another level this year when I decided to pull myself out of my rut by starting to training for a 10K, this was to be the first time in 6 years that I tried to run anywhere. (And even then I ran four times and gave up) I coupled this training with quite an extreme no dairy, sugar, wheat diet and as you can imagine I started to see physical results quite quickly. The mental side was a whole other ball game. I started as many people do with the couch to 5K plan it’s a type of podcast that’s starts you slow 3 minutes walking 60 seconds of running and builds up over 9 weeks. Those first few weeks were some of the hardest of my life. I was battling ... read more

There are some rather nice photos of the Sierra Nevada, they may have made it onto a second page. Please look for them Salou on the Mediterranean Sea. The town thronged with happy holiday makers, mostly Brits. They walked around town in their swimsuits, smiling, contended and happy. It is easy for us to take our sun and sand for granted. It was good to see people so relaxed and happy. Catalan activists on Monday marked the first anniversary of their disputed independence referendum by blocking train tracks and roads across Spain’s restive northeastern region and trying to break into the Catalan Parliament, underlining how charged the conflict over separatism remains. We saw demonstrations and heavily armed police and military. There are yellow ribbons everywhere. I hope they work it out. Interestingly Catalan language is very ... read more

10/7/18 - Final day in Barcelona, unfortunately the rain prevented us from going back to La Segrada Familia were we attempting to stand in line to be among the first 500 lucky people to get inside and hear Sunday Mass at 11 am. Sunday is a slow and lazy day in Barcelona. People tend to sleep in late. The streets were quiet, taxis and uber were hard to find. Finally, after a half an hour of wait we were able to get a taxi and headed to the port and boarded our cruise ship. Symphony of the Sea, a big awesome ship. We were excited to get on board, once inside, it felt like you were in another city. This ship is magnificent, we felt like, okay, if we want to get lost this is the ... read more

10/6/18 - Our 2nd day in Barcelona, we met up with our guided tour excursion. Our first stop is up the mountain of Montserrat were we visited the site of Our Lady of Montserrat, better known to the locals as the Black Madonna. This place is so beautiful and peaceful with it's natural scenery, you can feel the sacred ambiance of the surrounding. Mass was being celebrated at the Cathedral during our visit and we were lucky enough to have been part of the gathering from start to finish. We spent a good amount of time outside the basilica enjoying the beautiful landscape surrounding the mountain. After a while we head back down the mountain to our next stop the La Sagrada Familia. The Sagrada Familia is an expiatory temple, that is to say, a place ... read more

Day 1 - Barcelona a city with history dating back to centuries B.C., a beach-like atmosphere, Mediterranean breeze and incredible food to match. No doubt, Barcelona has something for everyone. Great attraction to see, the selection of Tapas bars the city has to offer and of course the famous Spanish ham. 10//5/18 - We arrived in Barcelona around noon, it took us an hour and a half between immigration and taxi ride to get to the hotel. After a few hours rest, we headed out to start our adventure. First stop was the La Boqueria (Market) were we enjoyed the smell and atmosphere of the city. Lots to see, reminded us of the market places back home. Loved it! We toured the streets of La Rambla and headed towards Ciutat Comtal a busy tapas bar highly ... read more

Toulon pictures were attached this morning, while we were docked in Barcelona. I don’t know why it takes so long to upload in the evenings, but it is much faster in the mornings. Hello from Barcelona. GOOD NEWS – Janet is feeling considerably better. A combination of the medicines, smooth sailing, and extra rest has gotten her back to feeling more like a passenger rather than a patient. However we had decided previously that it would not be a good idea to take our excursion to the La Sagrada Familia Basilica so we cancelled those tickets. Instead we had a fairly restful day in port but still on the ship. It would have been interesting to see what new progress they have made in the past 2 ½ years, but we knew how much walking it ... read more

I turned 50 in Barcelona this year. On purpose. Unbeknownst to me, it was the exact same weekend as the annual La Merce festival. So, my already celebratic milestone was now elevated to a carnival. "Happy Birthday tooooooo meeeeee! Any pre-planning we did for our 5 days in Barcelona went straight out the window. Ah, the joys of travel. We were now at "La Mercy" of the millions of residents and tourists that have crowded the downtown core to participate in over 600 events throughout the city, in just one weekend. I had no idea what La Merce was. I had to look it up. In Catalan, the word "Merce" means service, help, a sense of compassion, and loving mercy. Apparently, this festival has been celebrated since the Middle Ages, when the city of Barcelona was ... read more

Sometimes life decides that the path you are directed on is not actually the path for you, in my case this just happened in a massive way. Ready for a new adventure and to start again in a wonderful new county fate stepped in. Although I was torn between staying and leaving I had some traction spurring me on from when I had first made the decision to move September 2017. I have always dreamed and discussed moving to Canada and a sudden now or never feeling crept over me. The process of the visa application is a long and expensive one, made extra difficult because I don’t currently live in my birth country I spent months getting all the paperwork together. In July this year I was in London making money for the move, in ... read more

The Ice Cream Dream again. I wake up in a puddle of drool, salivating, I had just sampled some sort of mint-chip and was going for a sample of the orange sorbet. Not so, my brain reminds me as the sweet cream reveals its true form- alas, the taste of morning breath and the sounds of livestock. I don’t actually need any ice cream, or sweets for that matter. I packed a fifty-pound bag full of them when I left Spain, and that was after having stuffed myself with raspberry, marscapone, and butter croissants that I could swear were baked by God himself. Not to mention the serious damage we inflicted on French Rose’ and Barcelona’s cheapest Cava. (I swear I didn’t mean to post a nip-slip on social media!) What an ... read more
