Day 3 Wow, I slept like a baby last night! I woke up at 9:25!! I was n the balcony, checking Facebook etc, the cleaner came in, and frightened the absolute life out of me! When you’re travelling solo, the last thing you expect is someone saying, ‘hi’ in the morning! I nearly fell off my chair. We both fell about laughing, then agreed I didn’t need cleaning services today. I got showered and sorted, and ready to go for breakfast. I’ve got a little kick in my step today. It could be because I’m getting out, and about. I enjoyed a light breakfast today. I had muesli, followed by a bit of scrambled egg and a piece of toast. Enough is enough! Sadly, the coffee was rubbish, but not to worry, I will make that my ... read more

So, here I am on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The island is 98 km by 78 km, with 550 km of coastline. Typically, this is not my normal type of trip, since I prefer bigger cities, since the entire island holds a little less than a million people. Only Tenerife in the Canary Islands has a larger island population. I am staying in Palma, the capital of both Mallorca, and the autonomous region of the Balearic Islands. Autonomous since 1983, it has become one of the hottest party playgrounds in Europe, and the world. They say the Brits and the Krauts love it down here. The economy is based almost totally on tourism. And speaking of which, cyclists fit into the tourist category. Mallorca has a 24km cycle track, totally separate from the road. The ... read more

I had no idea how I would fill the middle part of my trip. I started, as you know, in Frankfurt. Though mostly a large, cold metropolis, it seems to be developing a heart. I even found a Chinese hot pot restaurant near my hotel. One of my primary reasons for visiting is to make a return visit to the little town of Rudesheim, on the Rhine. I last visited in 1971, on my very first trip to Europe. I fell in love with the little town, and you will see why. It also sits near the Rhine wine region that I am also visiting. I finally did something I have been talking about for decades. I randomly selected a spot on the departure board at the Athens airport. I decided, just by chance, the third ... read more

We're starting to feel a lot more comfortable in our new roles at work now we've been here a week or so and are more familiar with the lay of the land. I've also helped out a few customers so feeling more integrated and actually involved rather than just standing back and watching and letting others do the hard work. The summer season hasn't quite kicked in yet so it will be interesting to see how different it will be then! On our day off this week we decided to head to Palma Nova and then walk to Portal Nous as Greg had read about it somewhere online. But unfortunately you can't walk along the coast as there are lots of very nice, big houses and hotels in the way, but the pathway is still very ... read more

Eventually Saturday comes around and there's no rest for the wicked as we have to get up at the back of eight (for our final buffet breakfast) and then head over to Santa Pola to pick up our new keys! It's exciting but a bit annoying we have to do it in two trips, as we have so much stuff (including the new bed) and its a half hour trip each way. By the time we have gotten the keys and moved all our stuff in and picked up the dog, it is already early afternoon. The dog is ecstatic to see us and looks really happy and relaxed which is a good sign. And Sergio seems enamoured with him which is a good thing and says he was good as gold with him and the ... read more

November 21, 22, 23 Mallorca A 25 Euro taxi ride got us to the small Granada airport for our flight to Palma de Mallorca. Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic islands. It's a 50 minute flight (or seven hour ferry ride) from Barcelona. We had rented an apartment in the heart of the old town and looked forward to doing laundry (it had been two weeks since our last apartment rental in Madrid). I was instructed to call Maria who would give our driver directions about where to drop us off as the building couldn't be reached by vehicle. It was a short, up hill and up steps walk to #8 Cofrerria de San Miguel. Maria welcomed us with a bottle of Spanish wine, olive oil and candy and showed us the large apartment, all ... read more

I arrived at Mallorca very late Wednesday night, my flight with Ryanair was delayed one hour but also only cost me 50 euros, so it was quite OK. After waiting in the airport the flight only took around 50 mins, I slept all the way. I arrived in the airport after the busses had stopped going, I was going to the port right next to the airport and decided for a taxi, the port is called Can Pastilla - at night it was a 15 euro taxi trip, cheaper in day time. There I met my father and his travel buddy Claus, him and his wife both retired and sold the house and are currently travelling around on their boat in Spain. We went on their little rubber boat (they did not want to pay the ... read more

After almost one week in Palma the introduction week for the Erasmus students started on September 7th. I'll describe the activities day by day! Monday & Tuesday On Monday morning Yoran and I had an appointment at the local government in Palma with our landlord to get our Residents Card. With that card we can use the public transport with a 50% discount. It's quite some paperwork but luckily we had our landlord preparing everything for us :-) On Monday and Tuesday we had introductions at the university. It was the first time at the Universidad de las Islas Baleares so at first we had to find the right building. The campus is really big so we had some issues finding it. As Yoran and I were not the only ones who were a little later, ... read more
