We are heading for Bilbao but as it would be a long drive we decide to break the journey about half way at Oviedo. (note can't set Oviedo as a location for this entry so have picked Llanes on the coast). We chose Oviedo for convenience and because we find a reasonably priced apartment there. Doing a little checking I think, as this is a large place, I should also be able to find some BMW brake-pads somewhere here. We arrive before lunch so I have the whole afternoon to sort this out, but most places are closed until 3pm! Our apartment is on the 4th floor of a modern apartment block on the outskirts of the city. The neighbourhood is fine but a bit low on local colour, so I joke that it’s a little ... read more

Tiefe Wolken. Das Gute war, dass es nicht den ganzen Tag geregnet hat, sondern immer wieder. Es gab also Pausen. Meine ... read more

I awake this day to another sunny warm day, but with a really sore leg. Thats it, I need to do something different its just not right to continue pushing this injury every day. It's not getting better. First thing I do is look at the town on a map which is really cool, it's a medieval town with lots of stores, churches and history and its right on the ocean. I decide its a bus day. I head to a sport shop, I am convinced my shoes are adding to the problem, just not sturdy enough for the Camino. Standard Nike track shoes and not making it. I find a pair of Solomon trekking shoes, wide heel and lots of cushion. I buy them, and throw away my old Nike's. Then on to Pharmacy and ... read more

Somehow I am getting the day numbers mixed, this is day 17 on the Camino. Can't wait to get out of this town really nothing here, industrial and dirty looking. I am just across the street from the bus station and I have a strong urge to just go get on the bus and get to the next location without further damage to the injury. I examine the map that shows distance, elevation, number of towns, etc., and it looks like if pull up lame I can catch a bus ride along the way. The trail out of town is an immediate incline, helping the already tender leg. At the top of the hill there is an older Gentleman who stops me and asks me why I am limping. I show him my wrapped leg and ... read more

Wednesday dawned dry but damp. The rain had stopped! Everywhere was very water-logged due to heavy persistent rain overnight but for today it had stopped! Many campers have packed up and started to head home. The Northern Europeans bracing themselves for the long drive home through France (or to head to the Med further south), the Brits to head for the Santander ferry to get an early crossing and the Spanish are nowhere to be seen. The Spanish don´t do camping in the rain! There are still a few brave French souls about but not many. We thought (on Wednesday) that maybe we should think about heading for the Med as well i.e. heading home. The forecast does not look at all good and nobody is going to the Picos, they are shrouded in mist and ... read more
And another!
Q: How does this beach-side car park differ from those at home on the Med?
Can we be let off to run on the beach now please?
