I will tell you one thing... Slovenian's really know how to party! Last night I partied with Simona and all her friends from school until 6am!!! I am SO tired right now! Anyway, we had a blast at the popular club called "Global". Apparently Wednesday night is like "college night" here, so it was SUPER busy! Anyway, we drank a bit and danced a lot and just had a really good time! It's nice to go to a bar and not feel like a piece of meat! I havn't seen to much of the old city yet, but today hopefully I will be headed there. What I have seen is very beautiful. We actually walked through part of it at 6:30 on the way home from the bar! It felt very strange to be walking home ... read more

Hello all! I've arrived safe and sound!! It is so beautiful here... very lush and green and lots of mountains. I have yet to go exploring beyond the little home I am staying in due to harsh harsh jet lag, but tomorrow offers load of possibilities! Please pray a prayer of thanks for Simona and Mr. and Mrs. Pirih (her parents)... they are graciously taking care of me at this time and I am SO thankful for everything they have done for me! All my love, will post pictures soon! Mel.... read more

Geo: 46.2781, 14.8711Good hostel breakfast - cereal, cheese, cold cuts and a first for me and hostels - fruit! Bananas, plums, pears, apples ... I only had a tiny plum. It must be a local thing because they are everywhere. Took the bus to Bled. Could see para-gliders doing their thing. Cool. And who did I see at Bled? Chuck and Eileen again! It's a small world, especially when you're Rick Steves fans. While walking around the lake I ate the peach that I bought yesterday. Good, but it was bashed around in my bag a little too much. I walked the perimeter of the lake for an hour. Beautiful. Like a mix of Lake Como and the Dolomites. But I like Como more and the Dolomites less than Lake Bled. Hiked to Bled castle. Saw ... read more

Today we caught the bus up to Bled, a tourist oriented village on the shores of a pretty little lake of the same name. The landscape is absolutely stunning: lush green forests all around, a lake of clear blue water, a castle-topped cliff rising dramatically above the town and a church on an island in the midst of it all. We spent a couple of hours wandering round the lake, chatting with ducks and soaking in the sub-alpine splendour. We'd picked up a few ingredients back in town and so had ourselves a picnic on the lake edge, watching the locals and their puppies strutting their way along in the sunshine. After lunch we made the steep climb up through the trees to the castle. It was unfortunately a little on the pricey side, but the ... read more

Geo: 46.0514, 14.506Tired - insufficient sleep last night! Off to the train station - had a bologna sandwich on the tram ride over. Nothing special, but cheap by Vienna standards. Had an amazing pastry - like a cinnamon roll with walnuts, lightly iced. Outer ring was extremely flaky but the inner ring was a moist, chewy bread .... celestial ... heavenly ... like the spiral galaxy that is the Milky Way .... dotted with stars that were walnuts ... gute!Slept on the train to Ljubljana ... a beautiful train compartment with a TV and a big sofa bed that I stretched out on. Then I woke up - all a dream! You know you're tired when you dream about sleeping. Ate the nasty licorice that I bought in Bratislava - horrible. Slovenia is beautiful - meandering ... read more

So it turns out that Ljubljana is perhaps even prettier than Zagreb. It doesnt quite have the same charm, due to the over abundance of tourists in a smaller area, but it is nevertheless still pretty charming. The castle is a wee hike up the hill but the views are neat. Lucky for us the fog had cleared and we could see the mountains all around as well as all the red rooves of the town below. Corb spat off the side, tsk tsk. The buildings around town are beautiful and there are churches of all different colours and shapes. Even the bridges are exciting, with Dragon Bridge obviously being the best; everyone knows that Dragons Rule! On the weekend there were all sorts of music and live drama type things going on in the central ... read more

On my first day in Slovenia I only saw the Ljub train station, my hostel, and the bars next to my hostel. I started out early the next day to see the city. Ljub has been described as a mini-Prague, like that city was before it was discovered by hordes of tourists. Based on that I had an image in my mind of what the city would be like. And it wasnt like I imagined. It doesnt remind me of Prague at all, and that disappointed me. Still, Ljub is a nice, very small city. Its center is gorgeous, with beautiful old crumbly buildings (a favorite of mine!), some spires, a couple of neat old churches, and a big castle on a hill. (OK...sounding like Prague...but it still doesnt look like Prague at all, and is ... read more

I arrived in Ljubljana - which I still have trouble pronouncing, and spelling with all those consenants - mid-afternoon. I immediately went off to find and check into my hostel, the Celica. I liked the place right off the bat. As a former prison-turned-artsy-fartsy-hostel-bar, I was expecting something different from your average hostel and I was not disappointed. The place is really clean, has lots of cool spaces to hang out, and everyone is super-friendly. Within around 5 minutes of arriving at Celica, I was in my room - a 12-bed dorm unfortunately as all the smaller, prison cell rooms were already booked. I immediately met two blokes - 42 year old David from Whales and 23-year old Cathal (pronounced Ko-hal) from Ireland. We went down to the Celica bar where we drank a number of ... read more

Slovenia is a relatively small country. Its population is around 2,000,000. I must say though, for such a small country it really packs a punch!! From the peaks of the majestic Jesenice Alps to the deep underground chambers of the Skocjan caves, this country has something for all travellers whether you are backpacking or going 5-star luxury. We spent time in Lake Bled, Piran, Koper, Ljubljana (the capital city) and also visited the Skojcan caves. Lake Bled is a premier attraction of Slovenia. In winter, the lake freezes and the alps are blanketed in pure white snow. Its a winter wonderland. IN summer ( when we visited) the lake becomes a place to relax, unwind and walk. You can swim in the lake-the water is cool but crystal clear. In peak season it pays to book ... read more

I am going to jump ahead one stop to tell you about my time in Slovenia. (Budapest update to come later.) I'll start by saying this, "You should go!" In fact, go right now if possible. I found Slovenia to be brilliant. In the northwest it has the Julian Alps, in the east it has wine country, the southwest has a bit of coast (and you can always go to Croatia for more of that), and Ljubljana is a truly beautiful capital city. Ljubljana (lube-lee-on-a) has only around 300,000 people but boasts quite an amazing history and culture. There is more picturesque architecture than there is memory in my camera. Whether it's the hilltop castle, brightly painted churches, greening copper statues, pastels of fading paint, art nouveau residences, etc...LJ has plenty of pleasing visuals. In fact, ... read more
