Slovenia really makes me happy!! But first I should talk about my time in Budapest... So after waking up obscenely early (like 4am, after staying up packing until 1am) to get to the airport and flying to Budapest, and then eventually finding my hostel I was decidedly tired and ended up doing exactly nothing on my first day in Hungary. I spent alot of time on the internet writing the last blog entry and looking up places to go after Budapest. Talking to the owner of the Hostel about where I should go, he strongly suggested sarajevo... said it was amazing and that I should go there before everyone finds it... all I could think of was poor mum and dad having concurrent heart attacks if I told them I was going to sarajevo. So i ... read more

For the last six days I’ve been in Ljubljana, Slovenia. I know, most of you have never heard of the country, let alone the city. That’s a shame because this is a really happening place. It’s located with Austria north, Italy west, Hungary east and Croatia south. It’s a very easy country to be in because most people speak English and are modern in dress and other ways too, yet it’s unique. The city feels more like a town with a HUGE outdoor local market that has the best selection of fresh produce including cherries, straw... read more

So for 2.5 weeks I went around the Veneto, Slovenia and Croatia with Melissa. We each had a camera, so there are some big gaps in this JPG record. Aside from some unseasonable wintry rain in Dalmatia, the weather was quite lovely. The whole trip we took was Padova-Venezia-Ljubljana-Bled-Zagreb-Plitvice-Split-Solta-Hvar-Korcula-Mjlet-Dubrovnik. The mode of transportation went from train to bus to ferry to catamaran. Venice is always a highlight, and Padova was in my opinion an excellent base of operations (and much cheaper). I recommend all of Slovenia; it is such a pleasant place. And it will be on the Euro as of January 1st, which I predict will double prices. In Croatia, there is more to do--full points for Plitvice and Dubrovnik, and a passing grade for Split--but the tourist industry seemed rather jaded, and sussing out ... read more

Look, I don't even CARE about soccer, but truly, the Italians shouldn't have won. That was a sentiment echoed by the few thousand (mostly French) fans who gathered in the cities capital to watch the Italians do what they do best... ham it up. But other than the World Cup final (and a mighty, mighty hangover), Slovenia offered an enormous array of to-die-for shoes, some extraordinary walks among the greenery at the Botanical Gardens, and one of the best Industrial Design exhibitions I have ever seen. Another living history lesson for this little black duck. ... read more

Nary a small town of fitter, more stunning guys and girls have I seen yet. And here I was thinking Slovenia was a mere extension of Slovakia... or Yugoslaiva... or something. I mean seriously, I was picturing plastic tablecloths, bad music and old toothless women with woollen stockings - even in the middle of summer. No, no folks. Step right up and be prepared for a gorgeous race of people with a fierce outdoor industry, an unrivalled service ethic and one of the highest GDP rates per capita than any of the other newly joined EU cities. Welcome to Bled, Slovenia! A coastal Alpine country in southern Central Europe bordering Italy to the west; the Adriatic Sea to the southwest; Croatia to the south and east; Hungary to the northeast; and Austria to the north, Slovenia ... read more

We went to Bled on 17th May. The main attraction in Bled is the picturesque Lake Bled, the Bled Castle overseeing the lake, and the Bled island in the middle of the lake. The Bled Castle has been around for 1000 years, believe or not, recently they just celebrated their 1000th anniversary. Bled is about 1 hour and 20 min away by bus from Ljubljana. Upon arrival, we saw the fijakers by the lakeside (a fijaker is a boat man who will take you across the lake to the small island) and asked the price. It is 10 Euro per person, so we sat down on his boat and waited for him to start, but he said wait for 5 min. After 20 min has gone by, we asked him again when he will start, he ... read more

We arrived in Ljubljana (pronounced as Lu-bi-ya-na), capital city of Slovenia at around 15 May midnight. As we were walking from the train station to the hostel, the manager of another hostel who happened to be there to pick up his guests, saw us and gave us a free ride to Fluxus Hostel. By the way, we have booked 5 nights stay in Fluxus, the website is http://www.fluxus-hostel.com/, check it out. We will be staying in this lovely, abeit romantic private room for 4 nights and in the dorm for 1 night. The room is lovely, its small though, but decorated with an IKEA touch. It has a attached bathroom that has shower facility but no toilet. Next time (if we are coming to Ljubljana again), we should stay in the dorm instead, cos the dorm ... read more

Anyone want to buy a boat for 1,000,000 euros? The owners of the company I am visiting here in Slovenia are into sailing and boats, and they invited me to go to the Slovenian seaside with them to this expo. The show was set in Portoroze (the Slovene Monte Carlo as they say) ......Lots of boats...... anyway it was a beautiful day and it was really nice to get out of Ljubljana. The Slovene / Croatian seaside are so nice, architecture is left over from the days of the venetian empire, so each town is like a little piece of Italy. It reminded me of my summer in Venice and being out on the water. After the expo we drove to Piran (Pirano) near by which is a small town with an amazing central circular piazza ... read more
