We set off for Sibiu on back roads without hardly any traffic or people about as the bad weather had finally arrived. It wasn’t so bad though – just a light rain. We arrived at Biertan, our first stop of the day. Unfortunately the rain picked up during our visit and we had no umbrella, of course. So many umbrellas had been waved in my face every time a cloud appeared all through our trip but with blue skies and strong sun on our heads we never felt we needed one and by the time we did, there was not an umbrella to be found. So we were umbrellaless in the rain but not terribly bothered by it most of the time. The countryside was very pretty but mostly empty and misty. Every village has a ... read more

After Timisoara the Motorway continued a bit more. Unfortunately it was not finished completely until Sibiu. We had to go trough the old national roads for approximately 70 km which goes trough all villages and mountains. Just before we arrived to the city Deva, we could use the motorway again. Before dawn we arrived to Sibiu. We arranged a pension for our stay, which was called “the green house”. Once we arrived there we realized why it was named like that. The house was painted completely green.  After a short rest we went to the old city center. Sibiu is a medieval and one of the most cultural cities of Romania. In 2007 Sibiu (also known as Hermannstadt) was the European capital of Culture. We enjoyed or evening on some of the terraces of the ... read more

... read more

It's been a while ... We've been so busy recently that I haven't had time to update you, sorry. So after Prague we drive to Vienna, it was a pretty painless drive and the roads were scenic. Vienna was much better than we thought it was going to be, we had a guided tour from a couple of Joss' friends and managed to find enough time to see all of the main sights in a day. We then went to Jason's uncles house for a lovely meal which was very welcome (and very tasty). Then came another trouble free drive to Budapest. A soak in a traditional spa was in order that evening. The evening entertainment was a pub crawl to some traditional bars, meeting fellow travellers along the way. A great night, and not such ... read more

Day 3 of our stay in Romania, it is still stinking hot and humid. I had many adventures planned to do while we were here but it is difficult to go off hiking and exploring in +33C tempatures with our older dog. So we settled on a day trip into the city of Sibiu only about 20 minutes away. What a lively city Sibiu is, hustling , bustling fun place. It is one of the most charming places to visit in Europe. it is an anicent walled city, with the defence structures are still in excellent condition. We love to wander the old streets discovering every nook and cranny, jammed full of Romania heritage. Even though it was hot we managed to stay reasonably confortable in the air conditioned building, most shop keeper where very friendly ... read more

So we are off to discover Romania, and very thankful that we did not drive any later than we did, as the was road work every where. Sometimes on the left side, then switch over and construction on the right side, oh and then 1/2 the road was completely gone! A little unnerving but again we had driven through Albania so we are ready for anything. It took us over 6 1/2 hrs to do a 4 hour drive to our next destination, a lovely little Pension in a village just out side of Sibiu. We had hoped to stop along the way at Bethlen Castle as recommended by friends but between the heat and the extended drive we passed it up for another time. We did how ever, after a little searching in the village ... read more

On July 21st continued on our adventure across Hungary to Romania, still very hot, still very humid but we are all comfortable easy roads throughout Hungary. It should have been roughly a 4 1/2 hr drive to our first nights stop. We could probably made it further but we don't know what the roads are like in Romania I had read that there was a lot of construction and don't really want to chance it in the dark. As it turns out we were delayed at the boarder for over 45 minutes, not sure why, no reason given, which we have to accept and carry on. But did notice at the boarder there was a Canadian flag, which I thought odd to see. Oradea's building is a mix of Communist era boring block apartment style building, ... read more

We are of to Subiu for the last days in Romania. It was founded in the 1100. The large square as it is now was shaped in the 14th century. And some 15th century buildings are still looking beautiful. Here is also the Brukenthal palace museum. It shows paintings from Rubens, van Dijck and other masters. But.. No photos allowed. We stole s few of beautiful wall paper 300 years. It also shows some school reports of the 1730. They are huge and beautiful written. Our pension was another story. It quoted parking on side, well we drove into the street. Very tiny. Had to park on the footpath opposite. Liz was trying to get out of the car with the paperwork. We sat there for 15 minutes trying to open the car door. Hands waving ... read more

Eine ... read more
