Il me semblait avoir ... read more

Last day in Brasov. Had a bit of a lie in since our train didn't leave until 9:30pm and we didn't have to check out till midday. So we walked to the train station to get out sleeper train tickets. It was 270 Lei each for a 3 person sleeper carriage to Budapest. So about £50 each. Then we just wandered around Brasov. We went to the mall near the train station, which was pretty boring I must say, though there was a supermarket in the basement. We walked into the main pedistrian area to go to the black church and there was a food market there. We ended up going to a restaurant for lunch which served pizza and were showing Steve Irwin on TV which was a bit strange. It was more expensive though ... read more

Wake up refreshed, and the hostel had cereal for breakfast so we went and helped ourselves. I always find it strange to drink milk out of a carton that is stored in a cupboard...just seems wrong. We were booked on a tour to see Bran Castle, Rasnov and Sinaia and our taxi arrived at around 9:30 to take us and an aussie boy Jacob around to the sites (80Lei each). Our first stop was Sinaia. Now it was Good Friday for us but not in Romanian so there were lots of school kids visiting everywhere. AT Sinaia it was mainly teenagers. We hiked up the hill and Sinaia was beautiful!. We paid 20Lei to go on a tour, but you aren't allowed to take photos. They have someone join your tour who is in non descript ... read more

So Rachel and I got up at 5:45am to head to Heathrow airport for our 820am flight. Had breakfast at the airport and then got served the same breakfast on the flight, which Rachel woke me up for so I started the trip grumpy. No problems at immigration both entering on our NZ passports - no need for a visa Now we wanted to go to Brasov. So we asked at information but because my Romanian accent is shit they didn't know where we wanted to go (its pronounced Brashov sort of) so they said get the bus downstairs to the main train station. We bought tickets (around 30 Lie each) and the driver kindly helped us validated them. Which was fortunate because 3 stops later a ticket inspector got on. We were fine but there ... read more

Well it's been a few weeks since I updated this, and mercifully, Robbie's much better at uploading Fotos than I am, so now I've got about a million pictures to pull on for this update. Anyways, the past few weeks have been idly spent in Belgium, which is mercifully less interesting, and therefore less taxing on my writing skills. Short answer? I wrote a paper, and slept in sunlight for a weeks, it's been pretty good. So after Bulgaria, what happened (I know you're all keen to ? Well: Welcome to Romania! Say goodbye to your passport! Romania and Bulgaria rest outside the Schengen zone, and are accorded a special status in the EU slightly higher than "leper" but this meant we had to actually get our passes stamped when we crossed the Danube by train. ... read more

Romania was very pretty. I went skiing for the first time and fell a little. We also went on tubes. It was very fun. We also went to Dracula's fake castle. It was very nice. We also went into a palace. I saw cute dogs and cats at the hostel and it was very fun. - Sofia ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After flight from Miami to NYC, a 1/2 day in NYC spent with Lady Liberty, overnight flight to London and then another plane and we finally arrived in Bucharest, Romania. We immediately got our rental car and drove 3+ hours to Brasov. While the first part of the drive was boring, we then passed through cool mountains and SNOW!! I was so excited. When we arrived at the Rolling Stone Hostel daddy was a bit tired, but I ... read more

The historical figure Vlad the Impaler was a prince from Wallachia in the 15th century, and gained a reputation as the stuff of nightmares for his hideous method of executions. He was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's famous novel Dracula set in Transylvania. The book features terrifying creatures of the night, and continues to fascinate readers and moviegoers all over the world. In fact, the very thought of a vampire swooping down to sink their fangs into the tender skin of my neck leaves me close to a state of panic. So it was with some degree of trepidation that our hostel group headed out to Transylvania, a mere two and a half hours on the train from Bucharest. We drew some comfort from the fact we were travelling during the day, but a fierce snowstorm ... read more

After yet another midnight bus from Sofia to Bucharest it was time to finally catch a train, something that was at the top of our to do list from the start of this mini trip. So after an overpriced “taxi ride” from the bus stop to the train station in some random guys car we were off to Brasov. Brasov is a small city situated in the state of Transylvania (yes the home of Dracula!) the largest region of Romania and is known for its beautiful landscapes and the Carpathian Mountains. The journey did not disappoint, with beautiful scenery to view including large mountains, streams and forestry all covered in mounds of SNOW! I would like to mention that the temperature has dropped considerably since Greece, it has snowed non stop in Brasov. We arrived in ... read more

If you never watched Sesame street then you wont understand the title. Its Count Dracula on Sesame Street and he counts like that. It made me laugh when I wrote it so thats all that matters. Its VAMPIRE day... little cloudy but no rain...been looking forward to this day trip for a while now. Woke up ready to go.. grabbed food and caught the bus to Bran Castle known more for Dracula's Castle. It is situated in the city of Bran about 45 min bus ride from Brasov. Dracula is based on Prince Vlad Tepes also known as Vlad the Impaler. (Prince of Wallachia) His fathers nickname was Dracul and traded is two sons one being Vlad to the Ottoman Turks. Vlad was always beaten and abused since he was apparently a stubborn child. Then finally ... read more

I got to the hostel around 8 am from the night train and I was exhausted I luckily got to check in early and I took a nice long nap till about noon. It was a rainy day in Brasov and very cloudy so I grabbed my umbrella and started to explore the little city. It was going to be hard to compete with Budapest. Budapest was just an amazing city and definitely one of my top 3. Ok back to Brasov. Something I didnt know is that Transilvania is a county not just a city in Romania. I always thought it was a city and that's where Dracula was based out of. Well anyways Brasov is a city in Transilvania which is pretty much in the valley of two mountains, one very large one and ... read more
