Day 1 of my travels in Bucharest done and dusted and my first impression is - well, it's hot, sticky, there are lots of stray cats in the street and shirtless men. Shirtless men with quite substantial beer bellies I might add. My flight to Bucharest was fairly uneventful. I was quite amused going through customs as there was literally no body around even if you had stuff to declare. I then had to try find the bus stop (an easy enough task) and then catch the bus to the train station, which is a 5 minute walk from my accommodation. I am heading north from Brasov, but I had to go south to Bucharest because that is how the trains run. I am only here for one day, but I'll probably come back again. This isn't the most beautiful city, with endless rows of concrete apartment blocks leftover from Ceaucescu's idea of urban planning. But there are many vibrant cafes, restaurants and shops to visit. The metro is modern, efficient, clean and spacious. The city is appealing despite the sprawling concrete. I am staying at Hello Hotel, which I really like for its clean interior design, wired internet, aircon and other modern conveniences, but the sign on the exterior doesn't have the last letter lit, which gives the wrong impression of the hotel. Ok so we've already left but we wanted it on the little map thing. Currently in Bulgaria where there are yet more thunder storms and mosquitos which are eating us alive. (we call them Dracula). Arrived via night train last night and got to the hostel at around 6.30 am our time this morning (half 4 for you). Managed to check in and get a few hours sleep for a small extra charge, They also gave us breakfast so it was all good. Then we went for a wander and found all there seems to be here....nothing.
