Today we woke to glorious sunshine, the first day of good weather since we arrived in Scandanavia. We had a wonderful day in Bergen, our favourite place so far. It is Norway's second largest city, however, it has a very small city feel to it, nestled between 7 beautiful mountains. The streets and alleyways are lined with colourful, wooden house and beautiful flower beds. We visited the fish market on the waterfront which was selling smoked salmon, gravalax, peppered mackerel crab and caviar to name a few, All the fish was pretty reasonably priced, approx 6 USD. We took a funicular to the top of Mount floyen, 300 meters above sea level, and had magnificent views of Bergen and its suburbs. We decided to walk down for a bit of exercise and had a lovely ... read more

hello again, We have been on the road again travelling between Oslo and Bergen in the west after spending a relaxing evening in Oslo. This time we were a full 10 hours in transit! even outdid our previous trip to Oslo. The journey only looked about 5 hours on the map but we literally took the scenic route. It ended up been an interesting day all the same. The weather was crap but we are getting used to it. it was the breaktaking scenery on the way that it made it so. We took roads cutting the mountainside, descended into and ascended from Lush green valleys with mountain lakes. The way became increasingly forested as we went to the wild. Norway is called the land of the fjords and(3000 kms) tunnels and you would see ... read more

Hello from Bergen. I've been so busy, and the satellite connection has been so bad, that I'm hopelessly behind on the blog. Haing lots of fun, can't believe it will be over in 4 days. Except for a random thought here or there, I've decide I'm not going to finish the blog until I get back to Austin. I need to sort out the 5000+ pictures I've already taken, And scan the ones that have given to me. The cast of characters I've met so far dwarfs the total from all previous cruises. Monkey is well, but after this trip he'll find the office very dull. Bill and Monkey... read more

life in Bergen Europe » Norway » Bergen By ChipwoodJune 18th 2007 One of the many benifits of traveling with the Hatts is that Tanna always had here travel books out and was scouting out hotels, resturants and sites to see. We had this beautiful ride on the ferry along the coast from town to town in and out of the different islands and when we arrived at Bergen Tanna already had a hostel in mind and knew almost exactly where it was. Bergen is a lovely town that is easy to get around in, no need to buy the Bergen Card, no matter what Rick Steves say. We did alot of walking around saw the museums and the old part of town that hadn´t burnt down. Most of the cities in Europe are so old, centuries old, ... read more

We last left our heroine sitting at a computer at the hostel writing a blog for Oslo. We find her again 8 hours later beginning her Bergen blog on the same day at the same computer. Today has been a very relaxing day (again!). Lots of walking and just enjoying the amazing weather (twice in a row!!). I actually got too hot today -- quite a feat for Scandinavia. After ditching our bags at the hostel (which is actually a YMCA apparently), we wandered down to the fish market, a block away. This hostel is so centrally-located it's amazing! The fish market is well-known and a must-see when in Bergen, but in reality it's only maybe 10 stands selling fish with a handful of touristy stands surrounding it. However, I did get to taste whale ... read more

6/99-8/99 My parents were kind of against my new traveling ways, so I left for my first full-scale backpacking trip on my 18th birthday. Legally, they could not stop me! Here is a bit about each country I visited and what I did there. Iceland- 3 day stopover. Hitched everywhere as transport was too expensive. Visited Rejkjavik, the Blue Lagoon, Geysir, and Gullfoss. Sweden/Denmark/Finland/Estonia- Revisited some countries that I loved. Saw some old friends in Finland. Germany- Hamburg, Koln (thrilling cathedral!), Aachen, Rhine river area, Cochem (my favorite German town. Situated on the Mosel river with a castle looming above), Frankfurt, Rothenburg, Heidelberg, Munich, Lindau, Dresden, Berlin, Lubeck. I had a lot of places I wanted to see in Germany and was rarely disappointed. Germany had some of the best-preserved sights coupled with the best ... read more

After my disappointing introduction to Norway, I found Bergen absolutely incredible and it could do no wrong despite its abnormally frigid weather that caused me to hide indoors at the guesthouse reading the trashy romances. I'm not sure whether it was the charming painted wooden houses with its funky colored doors built upon narrow non-grid like winding streets or if it was the layout of the city with its houses built in steps on the hill side each with a great view of down below and the harbour. The city was great for a casual stroll down at the harbour or browsing through the galleries housed in the historic area of Bryggen with restorations ongoing using traditional methods and materials. My one and only museum stop in Bergen was to the Hanseatic Museum, a restored ... read more

Marstrand - Lillesand/Norway 8:05 am Wednesday Departure finally. Weather’s cleared up but the winds are nearly like yesterday. After breakfast we departed Marstrand where we had alot of shelter. Motored out and put up the main sail early in the morning. Winds are cold. Val has been under the weather. Very sea-sick. I’ve just been sleeping. Lars put a plaster for sea-sickness behind my ear last night. A bit tired. 13:30 pm Winds died out so we.ve taken in the genoa and are motoring for awhile. Our heading is Norway, ETA Mandal approx 12 hours. 00:40 am Thursday We didn’t make it to Mandal. Half way thru the afternoon the waves started to pick up and were about 3 - 4 meters high. The front of the boat hit so hard that everything shuddered. We ... read more

So after more than 5 hours on the boat, watching how the world is amazing everywhere and how you can feel yourself free and spiritualy high in these kind of places, it was time to come down to earth and find the way to the hostel in Montana, out of town... I finally got there just on time to see a bit of the sunset, it was probably around 10:30 pm, surprising for me ! I had only one day to explore Bergen, i don't think i saw a lot but... I started early in the morning to climb all the way up to the Mount Ulriken, 642 m, highest of the seven mountains surroundding Bergen, kind of hard walk, very steep, through the clouds, actually litterally in the clouds, so i couldn't get the ... read more

I'm typing this all after the trip was done, so my memory is shaky at best. Plus my laptop died in which I already had a nice long entry already written out. Ah well. It has been a few years since I've wandered around Norway, and this nation is still amazing. After a long flight in, I finally landed in the outskirts of Stavanger to spend the night. Sadly I never did get any time to venture forth into the city, and the crappy weather made for very little pictures. Typical countryside though I saw which reminded me of home. The highlights though were finally, after 2 long years, grabbing some melkesjokolade (milk chocolate bar) at a local store. Ahhh how I missed chowing down on all the foreign treats I used to gobble up ... read more
