I arrived in Bergen last night after 2 and half days of cycling from Stavanger in a huge downpour. The final 10km or so into the city was all downhill and more like riding down a river. A kindly norwegian helped me to the central hostel as she saw me struggling with my map that was fast turning into liquid and straight into a warm shower! I made some friends in the hostel and ventured out later to watch a bit of the European championships over a single beer (already an expensive night! except my friends paid for it, so I have to buy them 5 beers back if they ever come to scotland). Well I count myself lucky - up until that final 20km it was the first time since Germany that I'd actually had ... read more

I went with Stephi to work today. She is doing biology research specifically about how tourist fishing affects the fish supply. This means that several times a week she heads out to popular tourist fishing spots and weighs and measures the fish. She invited me to go with her today because it was the last time that she was going to one of the islands this summer and thought I might like the scenery. We took an hour and a half drive from Bergen across bridges and through tunnels to the island. In fact, we had to cross many other islands to finally get to the island she was working on. The area where the fisherman stayed was beautiful. There were about four houses right along the waters edge. We arrived around 11:40 so the fishermen ... read more

Today was the Friday wine raffle again. As the winner of last week, I was in charge of picking out the wine for this week. I went down to the store in town yesterday and bought two bottles of California red wine. I didn’t have much selection from the United States, but figured I should represent my country. I entered the raffle again this week for fun. Guess I’m on a bit of a lucky streak because I won again. Kenneth one of the other professors brought in Finish Vodka to add to my wine selection. I won the vodka. He said he would be interested to see how I was feeling on Monday. I am again in charge of getting the wine for the raffle. Maybe I will find some Italian wine. I’m thinking I ... read more

I think the light is finally getting to me. The past few days I have been having trouble going to bed and falling asleep. I’ve been getting only 5-6hours of sleep which is definitely not enough for me. Hopefully I will be able to fall asleep better soon. This week has mainly consisted of work. Other than that, I climbed Ulriken again and have been reading outside in the sun. It has warmed up quite a bit since I have been here. I only need a light jacket in the mornings and by the afternoon I find myself in shorts and a t-shirt. The nights are beautiful and a perfect time to be out. Last night I went with a group to play beach volleyball. It was nice to get out and play. After a few ... read more

After saying goodbye to my parents at Brisbane Airport (tuesday 27th May), I hopped onboard for my first international flight in almost twenty-four years (thankfully with none of the tears that had accompanied my previous overseas flight - a return journey from New Zealand when I was just five-years-old!), which would take me firstly to Singapore and then onto London - a twenty-four hour journey in all. Thankfully, despite having very little leg room and being unable to sleep for longer than twenty or thirty minutes at a time, I had no ill effects other than a slight bout of tiredness by the time we arrived in London - which naturally was blanketed in clouds so thick that I could barely see beyond the confines of Heathrow Airport as we came in to land! After a ... read more

So I left Aalborg via train, heading up to Hirtshals where the ferry to Norway left from. I arrived with plenty of time to spare so I grabbed a bite to eat. It was only later that I remembered that the class I had booked on the ferry “Catch Me If You Can” was a restaurant, not just a deck. Oh well, I still managed to fit in a nice dessert of chocolate cake and ice cream while on board. And more importantly, my table was at the very front of the ship…. Not that there was anything to see besides ocean. I read my book for the entire journey. Arriving in Kristiansand I was most pleased to see some decent hills. Northern Germany and Denmark were nice enough to look at, but really was very ... read more

When trying new foods my family uses a rating scale to determine if we will prepare a meal again. It is as follows… Food Scale Excellent (Can’t wait to make it again) Good (Would enjoy eating it again) Fair (Would eat it again, but not often) Poor (Would prefer not to put it back in my mouth) GROSS! (Wouldn’t touch it with a 10 ft. pole) I’m going to use this scale to assess some of the things I have tried here in Norway. I have vowed to try everything at least once. Salmon- Prepared with lime juice, jalapeños, and spices. Good Wild sheep- No idea how it was prepared but it was Excellent! Trout- Prepared with spices and covered in cheesy sauce. Fair Bacon and Cheese “paste”- (comes in a toothpaste looking tube) Poor Marcel ... read more

Last night I was invited by Stephy to a BBQ on Fløyen. Ten of us spent the evening playing games and grilling food in a park on the mountain. We played Frisbee, Botchee Ball, and a bit of football (soccer). Lars brought juggling balls and was giving me lessons. I saw about five different people juggle throughout the night, and decided that Norwegians must be born with natural juggling skills. I myself was not born with the talent, but I’m improving. I even had the chance to jump on a trampoline in the park. They have these neat disposable grills in Europe. It is an aluminum pan with charcoal in it that has a metal covering to grill on. I had never seen anything like it before. Every one had brought food to cook, and the ... read more

On Saturday Kristine and I climbed Rundemannen, the second tallest peak in Bergen, and fjell nummer fire (mountain number four) for me. It was a “gradual incline” to the top of the peak, but a bit grueling, as it is a continual upward slope. It sprinkled a bit on the top, which was surprisingly the only rain we have had since Monday, extremely out of the ordinary for Bergen. Yesterday was the infamous seven peak hike. Every May, hundreds of people gather to hike all seven of Bergen’s mountains. Some do it as few as 4 hours! I didn’t feel I was in great enough shape to attempt it. Maybe on my next visit, but for now I should probably stick to taking the mountains 1-2 at a time. Instead of hiking, I visited the Bergen ... read more
