25.2.2018 Drove 2 hrs from Isle of Portland to Southampton Airport and dropped little Jazz off then an Uber to the ship. Piles of people waiting to board, their ccomputer system was down, they had to MANUELLY check everyone in, but wasn't too bad and were on board for 2.00pm then set sail around 7.00pm, very late but made up time. Had two days at sea, including my birthday which was not too bad just a relaxing time, took in a couple of movies at the theatre, a couple of lectures and a few drinks etc, the days just went really fast. 28.2.1018 Arrived in Andalsnes...our first port of call....who would want to live in this god forsaken place! Not really abandoned but freezing, windy...could not get enough clothes on. Very pretty place really right up ... read more

Several years ago, Roisin and I visited Iceland hoping to see a phenomenon that is the Northern Lights. On that occasion, whilst experiencing amazing scenery, the nearest we got was a slightly green hue of the overcast skies. There was obviously some activity happening but nothing to write home (or a blog) about!! Despite driving to the edge of a housing estate where it was relatively free of light pollution and sitting, waiting for several hours, it was to no avail. I’m sure I saw a few curtains twitch. I’m surprised we never had a visit by the local constabulary as the only unusual activity in the area were these two strangers dressed in dark clothing sitting in a car, waiting…watching….The Police are obviously used to this kind of behaviour from over-keen foreigners!! We are now ... read more

Tromsø has certainly been more than all I hoped for. And I had hoped for a lot. I'd hoped to see the Northern Lights, but I never expected to get them three nights in a row. Or to get a show so spectacular that even a local photographer whose family have lived in Tromsø for generations was in awe! I don't think I can ever beat that and so, I've bought the t-shirt - the most expensive t-shirt I have ever bought. Lots of snow as expected. But far more beautiful than I anticipated, as the snowy landscapes were crowned with saturated blue skies to the extent that when people see the photos, they may think photoshop had been used to enhance it. Plus golden and pink sunsets glowing over the snow. If you did nothing ... read more

Getting up at 6.45am is no joke when you didn't get to bed until 3am after a long day of two trips. However, we don't have much time in Norway and none of it is to be wasted, so we soon set off on the walk into town for our pre-booked snowmobile trip. Shattered, we arrived at the Radison Blu to be told it was double booked and there was no room for us, maybe come back later. I was not happy, this was a very expensive trip already paid for with extra travel insurance required. The receptionist guy was completely unapologetic and it took a lot of reasoning with him to confirm whether or not we would be on the later trip - we could always plan something else instead and almost decided to do ... read more

In North Norway it is acceptable for the locals to refer to the police as 'you f***ing horse d!ck' when speaking directly to anyone in the force. However, in the South this is frowned upon and will get you arrested and slapped with a fine. Unless you are visiting from the North, as it is generally accepted that the Northerners are rougher around the edges due to harsh living and so 'you f***ing horse d!ck' is known to be a friendly salutation. Apparently this has been highlighted in the press recently when a northerner visiting Oslo required help from local police due to car trouble. I'm not sure if it's OK for tourists to use this term, and so when we drove past the police station, I did not stick my head out of the window ... read more

Free salmon. A shop giving out free samples of smoked salmon. And cheese. And fruit. My favourite shop in the whole world. Tesco take note! The alarm went off at 7 so pretty much a lie-in for us on holiday. We had a tour booked for 10am and we wanted to take a leisurely walk into town. The view from our room is stunning looking over the lake with snowy mountains all around as well. Walking also gives you the chance to take in more about the local way of life and check out things like houses and stuff. What's good here is despite the snow and ice, things still keep going. Back home we only need one snowflake to fall and the schools are shut, cars are abandoned and anyone who can get their car ... read more

I've finally seen the Northern Lights! Right on the doorstep of my accommodation too, impressive but they did keep me up bloody late! The trip to Tromsø was via Oslo and the airport must be the most expensive airport I've ever passed through. It's around 10 Norwegian Krona to the pound, so working out that the advertised fish and chips cost over £16 was quick. A smoothie bowl was almost £13 and the prices on the ski gear and jewellery were out of this world! I didn't do any shopping whilst we waited for our transfer to Tromsø. As you would expect, it's a fairly large airport - with staff zooming around on scooters, some pushing carts on the scooters, I wasn't expecting that. Weaving in and out of the tight throngs of people, it was ... read more

Getting to Norway and our first sighting of the Aurora Borealis One problem with charging for luggage on flights is that you try and wear as much as possible so you can minimise or eliminate the number of bags you have to pay for. If you're going somewhere cold this results in almost passing out as you swelter neath hot clothing in hot airports. I have snow boots on, thermal trousers and a thermal fleece. I think I've sweated off a few pounds already but sadly this feels like it's landed in my boots and I may end up with trenchfoot by the end of the day. Worth it to save £40 for an extra bag though! We are currently delayed at Oslo airport but only by 25 minutes (so far.....) which is pretty good for ... read more

Kirkenes, Inari & Saariselka Monday 11 December 2017 After breakfast we arrive in Kirkenes, putting us at 30° East, further east than Istanbul and St. Petersburg. We disembark our cruise this morning at about 9.30am. The bus was on the wharf waiting for us, driven by a bloke from Finland which was where we were heading. We pulled our suitcases through the not-so-deep snow for the driver to store them under the bus. A short drive through Kirkenes, took us to a brief stop at the Russian border. Photos and a few souvenirs where the order of the moment. There was a little shop full of over-prices Russian and Finnish items. One in particular caught my eye and that was the Russian dolls which fit inside each other. The only problem was the outside one had ... read more
