Hurtigruten is one of the major ferry companies in Norway. They operate a ferry system in northern Norway which starts at the town of Kirkenes which is almost on the Russian boarder and ends in Bergen on the west coast. The ferries are actually small cruise ships with all of the amenities and some people choose to travel the entire route from end to end which takes about five days. Most people use it as a way to travel between local cities in the area. We boarded the Nordkapp in Harstad at 8:30 and were in Solvær by 6:30 pm. The ship stops in several cities along the way and travels through some of the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery in the world. Lofoten is an archipelago stretching well out into the North Sea. It is a ... read more

Norway is not a large country by area (149,000 square Miles) but it is long and narrow with its northern most reaches curving over the top of Sweden and Finland and bordering Russia. Its coastline is about 1,500 miles if you don't count the fjords and islands and over 16,000 miles if you count them! Getting from south to north can be a challenge. The excellent rail system only gets you about half way and driving is almost impractical given the huge mountain ranges in the central part of the country. So, it is boats and planes! The Norwegian government subsidizes both in an effort to support people continuing to live in the outlying areas. Hege was born in Tromsø and was raised in Harstad which is above the arctic circle. We took a short flight ... read more

The last port of call northbound is a place called Kirkenes. On the surface, this town is very much like the others. The colours and styles of building are very similar to the other small villages we have seen on the way north. Kirkenes is located on a fjord which freezes over in winter. They have a snowhotel which is made of snow and only operates in winter. They are about 15kms from the Russian border and not too far from the Finnish border. Looking at a map of this area, you can see where Norway shares a border with 3 other countries – Sweden, Finland and Russia. We were taken to the Snowhotel (which is a hotel made out of ice and snow) and were able to get a close up look at some reindeer, ... read more

The ship docked at Honningsvag. This little village boasts 2.5 supermarkets and 5 pubs. The locals make their living through fishing and the production of Stock Fish. Stockfish is unsalted air dried fish. It lasts for a long time and is easily re-constituted into moist fish. We had some on the ship – both dried and re-constituted. The dried stuff is a great way to carry and consume protein without worrying about it going off. We travelled to the North Cape in a bus. There were 3 buses in total from the ship. North cape is the most northern part of Norway and continental Europe. The latitude is N 71.10.21 degrees. The North Cape is the point where the Norwegian Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, meets the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean. It ... read more

Europe » Norway » Northern Norway » Tromsø February 24th 2017

The snowfall continues as we head north to Tromso. We stopped at Finnsnes for a short time – enough to be impressed by the land(snow)scape. This must be where people got inspiration for winter wonderland pictures, songs and so on. Quite magnificent. Check out the photos. Tromso is the largest city in northern Norway, population 70,000. We arrived amidst falling snow and it continued to snow sometimes lightly and other times heavily for the whole 3 hrs we were there. Despite the weather, we headed up the mountain on the cable car. Our visibility at times was only 10-20 metres but on some occasions we were able to see down onto Tromso. We had a great time up on the mountain. Check out the photos. The northern lights appeared again tonight. Again they were weak, but ... read more
