31st March - Cherry Blossom Trees at the Kersenbloesempark #heygo http://www.heygo.com We were in Amsterdam Forest. The construction work started in 1934. As this was the time of economical crisis, many unemployed worked on this immense project moving manually enormous amounts of ground from the canal boats, trains and around the space using small wagons and temporary rail tracks. All together around 50 000 people worked on the project. The enthusiasm was enormous. Often clerks from the municipality, whose pay has not been very high at the time, worked at the park. During the war the works slowed down. Germans took some parts of the park for their military installations. The antiaircraft guns were put there to protect nearby Schiphol from the attacks by the Allies. The adjoining areas of Amsterdamse Bos were declared as unsafe ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 6th March - Local Market & Windmill Brewery Amsterdam Dapper Market. At the beginning of the 20th century, the bustle on the street of the Dapperbuurt increased. Hawkers, in particular, determined the street scene and overran each other trying to sell their wares. This even led to fights to get the best spots with more customer traffic. The hawkers also hindered traffic with their carts and the municipality didn’t like that. In 1910, the Dapperstraat was officially designated by the municipality of Amsterdam as a market street. The Dappermarkt draws visitors from the all over the Netherlands. There are many products of interest to the city's residents Surinamese, Antillean, Turkish & Moroccan origin, giving the market and the surrounding neighbourhood a strong multicultural feel. Open 6 days a week but durin... read more

http://www.heygo.com 13th February - Amsterdam It doesn’t happen very often – in the past decade, the Amsterdam canals have frozen only twice, in 2012 and 2018 – so when it does, locals and visitors alike venture out onto the ice in full force to experience something truly unique. Every winter, as soon as the temperatures drop below freezing, excitement about the prospect of skating on natural ice builds, today our tour guide was hoping to take us skating along one of the canals but sadly it was deemed unsafe! So we took a strong along the canals instead, it was quite busy on a Saturday afternoon but still very enjoyable in the winter sunshine. There are around 2,500 houseboats in Amsterdam, many of which are moored in the city centre The original houseboats are charmingly restored ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 9th February - Trading on Tolerance - Amsterdam Amsterdam has famously tolerated prostitution (Red Light District), Catholics (Hidden Churches) and cannabis (Coffeeshops) when all those things were illegal. Mark, our guide today explained and charted the history of these 'tolerances' through to the present day. The Dutch concept of tolerance dates back to the end of the Eighty Years’ War, after William of Orange, had just been crowned King and as a Protestant monarch decided to let the Catholic minority have the freedom to practice their faith as they saw fit. This was really a big deal and it would never have happened in countries like France, England, Rome or majority of the Italian City-States at that time. This not only laid a foundation for tolerance in the Netherlands, it planted the seeds that would ... read more

It's almost a cliché to talk about the pandemic in ones blog. But sometimes you can't get around clichés. And so let's get it out of the way, yes my life too has been shaped in one way or another by Covid-19, and yes this blog is partially about it. But only partially. Only in the sense that a lot of my actions in the last year have been influenced by what was, and was not possible. In my case, I think I was rather lucky. A lot was possible. I could still travel to Germany, even during the height of the first wave. Not as a tourist, but as a lover. Many couples were separated by borders during this time, but not me. Germany and my country kept their borders open and so I could ... read more

Have you been to one of the coolest and weirdest cities in the world – the Dutch capital? Did you know that Amsterdam has more canals than Venice and more bridges than Paris? You can spend one day in Amsterdam or one month and still discover a ton of things to do and places to explore. But for first-timers, let’s concentrate just on these 5 cool things that you can only experience in Amsterdam. 1. Visit the Unique Coffee Shops Amsterdam features three kinds of establishments. After well over 30 ferry trips and a cruise you would think /expect/hope that we were pretty ok with boats and how they work. Apparently not. First school boy error was not counting floors and having to walk up 16 flights of stairs, in masks, carrying a very heavy suitcase (technically error 1 was not packing a capsule teeny lightweight overnight bag for the ferry but hey ho) by the time we got to the top, all three of us were ever so slightly tired. As per usual our room was the furthest from the car but there was a free mini bar and water in a can! We all slept well until we were woken at dawn by the loudest burst of (randomly) I love your smile, bird noises and an announcement about breakfast. Yeah, ... read more

Mijn eerste blog vanuit Leiden! Zet het ... read more
