Off to Rotterdam we went to go to an event called Distorted Hardcore. The only reason we were going to this out of the way event was to see Hellfish. He was pretty much of our last DJ to cross off our wish list. One of the UK's biggest industrial producers, he makes music like you would NEVER have heard before, I promise you. He creates such a unique mash up of tracks influenced mainly by industrial, hip hop and drum n bass that he makes music I can only truly categorise as "Hellfish's sound". Each track is produces is strikingly different from the last that we were really excited to see how he in the world he was going to pull off a well mixed DJ set! Although, before seeing Hellfish we did spend a ... read more

It was like the prodigal son had come home when the Ms Eurodam sailed into Rotterdam. Although the headquarters of Holland America are now in Seattle, there is still a strong tie with Rotterdam and the cruise. The cruise terminal we docked at was located on Holland America Avenue/Street and the old headquarters of the company were located nearby (now turned into an upscale hotel). As we sailed off into the sunset, crowds of passerbys stopped to cheer and wave from the waterfront parks. I think the warm welcome and send off had something to do with fact that the cruise (with its 2000+ passenger capacity) was currently Holland America's largest and the ship had been away touring the Caribbean since the fall. My last visit involved walking out of the central train station, looking around ... read more

Today was a mixed day. Firstly we had a great tour of Rotterdam Harbour in a big tour boat. The harbour is one of the busiest in the world. Plenty of pushy German tourists as well. We got the best tour because we had John and Hennie adding real life stories to the commentary. Back up the Euromast(in Rotterdam not Amsterdam)...didn't get any easier...then morning tea on the observation deck. The view is amazing. Rotterdam is a very pretty city. Not on my dad's list of things to do was the funeral of his oldest sister. A little different to funerals at home. Above and beyond the call of duty Dad! You owe us! We had a farewell dinner at Aunty Wills house with traditional Dutch food...very fattening I think! It is always hard saying goodbye ... read more

Hi All. First thing. We have taken the private settings off the Blog so it is now open to the world!! Hopefully this will make it easier for everyone to see. Tuesday we started slowly. Caught up on the mail, washing etc. Hennie gave us a guided tour of the Hank Loch historical monuments - birth place, places he saw during the war, famous parks etc. It was really interesting. There must be a family at number 16 who wonders why their house keeps getting photographed. We then went off to Rotterdam to see the Maeslant Storm Barrier. For we male, engineer types, it is an amazing piece of engineering. 2 giant gates come across the river preventing the storm surge from flowing up the river and causing floods and damaging dykes. It is big, very ... read more

I wasn’t going to write a blog about Pokke Herrie but a lot of eventful stuff happened so here goes... Smic was exhausted. I was grumpy because he was exhausted but it was our third event in a very short space of time so he had every right to be tired haha. We were staying in Rotterdam, which upon our arrival didn’t seem like the most prosperous of cities. It’s the second largest city in The Netherlands and is the birthplace of a style of music called Gabber. It is quoted in Lonely Planet travel guide as being a form of mutated techno that was unleashed to the world in the 90’s. Gabber has now evolved into hardcore and we now know what was produced in the 90’s as “old school”. I was excited to be ... read more

Rotterdam and Amsterdam don't get on to say the least. Residents of the former take pride in their gritty, hard-working image manifested by the city's position on one of the world's biggest harbours and the busiest port in Europe. Amsterdam is the 5th most popular tourist destination in Europe and its economy is fuelled by its substantial financial districts. Amongst people of my age it is renowned for its party atmosphere and relaxed attitude. Where Rotterdam stands for work, Amsterdam stands for play. Only fair to sample them both for ourselves. Thursday morning saw us leave Essex, bidding tearful relatives goodbye and carrying backpacks weighing the equivalent of a five-year-old child (Si actually took a five-year-old child along but had it confiscated at customs). During the six hour sailing from Harwich we were both subdued. Si ... read more

First day, not much to say but free internet access in hostel while drinking. So to get this bad boy started: * Ferry uneventful except for a boat near us catching fire and lifeboat having to rush out and save it * Si has personal crisis from home before we've even entered Dutch waters * Rudi Voller lookalike boards ferry and is photographed by both of us in a covert manner * On arrival in Rotterdam, tram is the chosen method of transport. Except we fail to get off at the right spot and end up going through the Dutch equivalent of South London. Which fortunately ends at the ground of Sparta Rotterdam. And there is much rejoicing and photo taking. * Eventually arrive at hostel an hour and a half after we were supposed to. ... read more

I woke up in the morning at about 6:30 and then got dressed and waited awhile and around 7:30 we got our free breakfast. They had this buffet thing and there was some bread and deli meat and cheese and then there was this good nutty cereal with raisins that I got Cindy to try (without the raisins) and I think she liked it. There was also this good pineapple juice. After breakfast we had to go shopping to get my dad a towel, and Cindy got some sneakers that she liked. Then we came back and dropped our stuff off and went to get some lunch from that same gas station shop, but this time since it was during the day we could get freshly made stuff. I had a healthy baguette. It was really ... read more

When we arrived at Rotterdam we were so tired that we got a taxi... then we were trying to speak German to him and at the end we found out that he spoke English! Also, cars here drive really fast. When we were in the taxi it felt like he was going really fast, and I didn't see any speed limit signs anywhere! But we found the Stayokay hostel good. And then after getting our luggage in and stuff locked up we were really hungry so we went out looking for food. It took forever to find a restaurant and then we didn't even get Dutch food... and then we came back to the hostel to shower and brush teeth cause we stunk really badly. While I was waiting for Cindy to finish showering, I laid ... read more

After leaving Germany, we headed Northwest to visit one of Sylvia's good friends in Rotterdam. On our way, I made Sylvia stop in the city of Arnhem so I could track down some World War II history. The city of Arnhem, as well as the nearby cities of Nijmegen and Eindhoven, contained bridges that were important Rhine river crossings. The allies attempted to capture these bridges in Operation Market Garden. This attack was the plot of the movie "A Bridge Too Far." After our time in Arnhem, we arrived at our destination. Rotterdam is famous for being the busiest seaport in the world, although it is a good distance inland. Sylvia's friend Lucika lives on a well-known street in Rotterdam and her apartment is above a shop on the street, so it was a nice place ... read more
