Rotterdam. One of the newest cities in The Netherlands. Why so? Well, because the heart of Rotterdam was almost completely destroyed by the Luftwaffe; 900 civilians were killed and 80,000 made homeless. The City Hall survived the bombing. Ossip Zadkine later strikingly captured the event with his statue Stad zonder hart ('City without a heart'). The statue stands near the Leuvehaven, not far from the Erasmusbrug in the centre of the city, on the north shore of the river Nieuwe Maas. Rotterdam was gradually rebuilt from the 1950s through the 1970s. It remained quite windy and open until the city councils from the 1980s on began developing an active architectural policy. Daring and new styles of apartments, office buildings and recreation facilities resulted in a more 'livable' city center with a new skyline.... read more

FYI: There are 2 pages of photos, or you can just click on one photo and see all of them. If you are printing then look for the Print Version link on the left and it will print out all pictures! So, I am really into my new Couch Surfing adventures, they have all proved to be a fabulous time and there is always some kind of activity going on in the world. I love meeting people that are so like-minded and open to let you stay at their home, feed you breakfast, in return for some friendly conversation. If you are interested, check it out, www.couchsurfing.com. I headed to Rotterdam last weekend to join over 100 people for the 2007 Sinterklaas Rotterdam Couch Surfing event. I was told about the event through some of my ... read more

Tandem Rally We had a great time at the rally and met some lovely people and families. Lots of kids but not in the campervan field. They tended to be in tents and caravans. We had good weather for the whole week with just one day with a couple of showers. But even those we avoided by being in the cafe at the time. After that we traveled west into Netherlands exploring campsites and cycle routes in Flevoland and then around Utrecht and Gouda which is a lovely city with some astounding architecture and stained glass. We found a site with a no smoking rule. The man who runs it found some special long and heavy planks to help the van onto the very soft ground. We thought we would sink in again as it ... read more

After spending 3 days in Amsterdam to recover from our flight over from Australia and aclimatise to European conditions, it was time to begin our journey by train. We spent our last day in Amsterdam doing a test train trip going to the nearby beach at Zandvoort an Nee, where it was a bit cold for a swim. The trains in the Netherlands are easy to use with a mixture of double deck and single deck sets. You can simply jump on without having to reserve a seat. Rather than go straight to Rotterdam we decided to stop off at Den Haag (which we were allowed to do under our train ticket). Den Haag is another nice city, with similar narrow streets and similar architecture to Amsterdam but less canals. It is also the head of ... read more

Hello all, welcome to my travelblog! The coming months I'll be travelling and working abroad for most of the time and through this blog I'll keep everyone up to date. I'll be posting all my entries in English. These coming months means much to me, it's like a dream come true and I'd like to share it with all of you. I hope to see some reactions from you, I'll appreciate that. Those who know me a bit better, know that travelling has always been one of my dreams. As a kid I was always interested in other countries, languages and cultures but I didn't had the opportunity to travel much. But I'm happy to have the opportunity now. Some of you know that since the end of May I've been working many extra hours ... read more

Përshëndetje! (just learned how to greet in Albanian ;-) By definition it is summer, but there is not much of it to be seen in the low lands … except on 13th of April, the day of Rotterdam’s marathon, which had to stop after 26 marathoners were taken to hospital (fortunately the professionals had finish it already, so there were prizes to be hand over). I got though some sun in Portugal in May! I had the chance to ride in the new metro of Oporto, which goes till the airport! ( Nothing utterly especial, because that is how it should be – you may think- sorry to disappoint you but that’s quite some achievement, given that the equivalent has been ‘planned’ for Lisbon for the 98 Expo, and after almost 10 years, Lisbon’s metro ... read more

I took the 45 minute EasyJet flight to Amsterdam yesterday, it was a rather frighteningly noisy plane, but we made it fine... It was beautifully sunny when I arrived and my friend Karen picked me up and drove me to her place in Rotterdam which is my favorite apartment in the world. Unfortunately we woke up to rain and its quite miserable in good northern european style... Lots of new about flooding in Bangladesh.... uh oh.... (sorry for the short and rather pointless post, just wanted to make sure my little brother got the link....) ... read more
