Our destination today was the city of Maastricht in the Netherlands cheesy Limburg region. But our route mostly followed the route taken by Allied forces beginning on September 17, 1944 in the heroic and disastrous Operation Market Garden. This actually consisted of two actions: the largest airborne drop ever used to capture multiple bridges along the route of advance (Operation Market) and a ground advance up the only road using the airborne troops as a carpet (Operation Garden). The airborne forces had to take 6 bridges nearly simultaneously. Although it would be best if all bridges were captured intact, a considerable amount of bridging material was made available. The airborne forces were to include the US 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions, the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade, and the British 1st Airborne Division (in order from ... read more

Hello to all who want to see what I'm up to! This is my first ever blog, so I'm just testing how this shizzle works. Now, how to add photo's... hmmm... I think/hope that adding them puts them in the text automatically...? Let's check! Travelwise: I'm off to London for a super quick visit this weekend. Fingers crossed it will all work out, what with all the delays and security evacuations. And to top it all off the dutch railways are doing 'some work', so it will be a bit of trek to get to Schiphol. I'm going to London to attend the christening of my godchild, which I'm super excited about! And seeing everyone will be nice too, even if it is only a flying visit. When I'm back home after this weekend the packing ... read more

This area is so beautiful that it takes a while to take it all in. The old city of Ahrweiler is ringed by walls and inside that you find all the old buildings. Most of them are now restaurants with terraces where all the tourists are sitting sipping on their glasses of beer and other drinks. We had been here before but it still is a nice place to visit. We enjoyed a ride in the local tourist train that goes along the Ahr to Bad Neuen Ahr. Just a few kilometres away. This is health place where people go to that have the warm bath and try to get better. Our next place was Alf a small place on the Mosel. We stayed at a B&B that had a nice room with a balcony that ... read more

Day 7 - April 21 Hoorn, Netherlands We awoke and looked out our cabin wines and all we could see was open water as far as we could see. Usually on river cruises you see land on both sides of the ship. We realized that during the night we entered the North Sea. On day 1 they tell us that river cruises don't need life boats because the shorelines are not far from the ship. Well, we could not see land anywhere on the horizon. We arrived in the charming town of Hoorn at 7am. Very picturesque and quaint. We went on a morning walking tour with a local guide. The walking tour was about 2 1/2 hours through the most historic parts of the town. Like all other cities in this country, there are canals ... read more

Our lunch stop en route to Bastogne and then Luxembourg was Maastricht. I knew of Maastricht as the venue of the Treaty of Maastricht and its role in creating the EU, but little else about it. It turned out to be a delightful small city with many Medieval and later sights to see. We walked in past the Basilica of Our Lady, along Wolfstraat through the central shopping district to Grote Staat, arriving at the Vrijthof square. Many cafes lined the square, likely lunch spots. I bought some Dutch licorice at one candy shop. (I was pleased to find the Dutch have quite a taste for licorice.) All along the route secondary school students were putting on impromptu performances to collect money for a charity. I never did find out exactly which charity they were supporting. ... read more

Rain rain go away. Come back another day. We woke early to a dismal morning. We left the campsite under a leaden sky. The clouds looked almost heavy enough to fall out of the sky. And the rain gently pitter pattered on Suzy’s roof. In some ways the rain was a blessing as we were able to test out the repairs done to her roof. Once we had worked out that the leak had stopped we wished the rain would do the same. As we snaked our way out of Cambridgeshire in to Essex the rain continued to fall, the grass verges looked Autumnal, the trees starting to take on their Autumn colours. The purple of the blackberries and the elderberries , the red of the hawthorn . All heralding a change in the season with ... read more

Geo: 50.8512, 5.69154OK, so this mornings mission was to find yet another post office. Why? Because in my efficient packing in Amsterdam I somehow managed to pack the TV remote from the last hotel. Why? I don't know, some kind of brain freeze. I've now gone from leaving stuff in hotels to unintentionally flogging stuff. After consulting google I took to the streets. Google listed 2 offices, which I couldn't find. So I went to the tourist office. They gave me directions and said AKO. Righto, that should be easy. Nope nothing. Finally in frustration I asked a random shopkeeper who explained they don't have a post office, but down the road third street to the right was a magazine shop, AKO, who provide postal services. Finally found it! Only took two hours out of my ... read more

Hoi hoi. Laatste blog.
