Aaaaand we're almost off. I've been looking forward to this trip for what seems like forever! Now that it's finally here I feel surprisingly calm. ? Suitcases are almost packed, trains are booked, and lovely Chris is picking us up tomorrow morning to take us to Geilenkirchen station, for which we are forever grateful. Thought it might be nice to do a blog again, let's see how far we get. Now, how to add photo's.... ?... read more

And a rather odd New Years Eve it was. I went down to the local bar to have a drink, walked in on a heavy metal/grunge band playing their own version of Gangsta's Paradise, and got chatted up by a local sheep and beef farmer who, after exchanging about 5 sentences, started asking for my number. Not sure what he wanted to do with it, as he'd just told me the furthest he'd travelled so far was Christchurch. On the first day of the new year we made our way to Dunedin(our first stretch of motorway since Auckland!!), to a campsite in Portobello, on the Otago Peninsula. It was a lovely sunny day, and we got there early in the day, so we did some washing, hung it out to dry and went off to visit ... read more

My last blog for this year! And just in time! After our night in Wanaka we drove to Queenstown to fill Bertha up, and then over Crowne's Pass, which might be the highest pass we've taken this holiday. It was hairpin bends all the way down to Arrowtown. We had a little mosey there(lovely little town but far too crowded, mostly with asian tourists). So onwards to Te Anau! We spent 2 beautiful days in Te Anau, and went on a GORGEOUS boattrip to Doubtful Sound. Which isn't as easy to get to as Milford, by the way. We were collected from our holiday park by bus, driven to Manapouri, to take a ferry across Lake Manapouri, to a small jetty next to a big power station(and nothing else), to then be loaded back on to ... read more

Hello there from dusty Wanaka! We had a bit of a scorcher today, just like Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so the campsite we are in now, on the edge of Lake Wanaka, has turned into one big dustbowl. I just walked back from the amenities building after a rather unsatisfying shower(the shower head had exactly 6 tiny holes, pointed in all directions, and it was built into a wall at a height that hobbits would really appreciate, but beings of the human kind not so much), and my feet had turned a lovely dusty brown by the time I got back to our Bertha. Luckily the wind has died down a bit, and it's slowly cooling down as well, and of course the view is to die for, so we're still happy happy! :) But ... read more

It's been a while! We were either quite busy or nowhere near a halfway decent wifi connection, so I'll do some catching up. The day before our boat crossing we 'roughed' it in Kaitoke Regional Park(roughing it might be a slight exaggeration, our Bertha is well equipped for at least a couple of nights without power, but still. No internet. Gasp.). The park was amazing, we did a nice walk there, and went to see the Rivendell site, which was unrecognisable but non the less very cool to see, especially for a LotR geek like me. :) Staying in the park was fun, the campsite was absolutely gorgeous. We were there on the Saturday that all the local kids started their holidays, so there were groups of drunk-ish and loud-ish youngsters(I sound like an old fart!!) ... read more

And stinky it was! Umphf! But also absolutely amazing. So unreal, all these bubbling mudpools, geysers and sulphuric acids breaking through the surface of the earth. It's like the earth is throwing up a bit. I can see why lots of the pools have references to the Devil! We went to Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu, both amazing sites to walk around in. Te Puia has a geyser which erupts a few times a day, very impressive to witness up close. Wai-O-Tapu has lots of acidic pools that have the most amazing unnatural colours, like a massive pink and yellow lake, and a fluorescent green one that is hard to catch on camera. While we were in Wai-O-Tapu it started raining quite hard, which kind of put a damper on things. We eventually went back to our ... read more

Just a quicky: On Sunday we drove from the west coast of Northland past Auckland to the west side of the Firth of Thames. A lot of kilometers, but mostly easy driving as the roads were flat and wide. We spent the night at a campsite in Orere Point, and it was really lovely. Hedges in between the sites, hardly anyone there(which isn't always a good thing but in this case it was), lots of gorgeous trees and birdsong everywhere, and a beautiful beach about 5 minutes down the road. Monday we drove all around the Firth of Thames, up and across the Coromandel. When you leave early in the morning there's not much traffic around, only the odd motorhome. When you pass them going in the other direction they usually wave at you, which makes ... read more

Ah the freedom of the road..... We collected our (motor)home away from home on Thursday, and it's pretty great! As in HUGE. As in I feel like a bloody trucker driving around in it. When we stop somewhere we usually get a few raised eyebrows when people see a chick getting out of the drivers seat. But it's soooo much fun!! First things first: We spent about 2 hours at the Wilderness office, going through paperwork and instruction videos and the lot. Then the big moment finally arrived: I had to get behind the wheel and take off. Preferably on the left side of the road. Luckily there weren't any onlookers at that exact moment, which gave me the peace and quiet to just get in and go. The rental place was at the airport, which ... read more

We made it! After the stepmother of all journeys we finally made it to New Zealand. 11 hours from Amsterdam to Hong Kong, 6 hour stopover, another 11 hours from Hong Kong to Auckland. It was long and uncomfortable and tedious and loooong. But so worth it! We arrived in Auckland on Monday morning, and had 3 days to acclimatise here. The first day was mostly spent walking around like zombies and trying not to fall asleep on park benches. Needless to say we went to bed early and slept like logs. The second day we walked to Auckland museum via Parnell(lovely, quaint little area with artistic people and artistic shops). Auckland museum was pretty impressive, from the Maori exhibit to the Maori cultural performance(I saw a haka being performed live!!!, didn't think I would get ... read more

It's almost THAT TIME!!! Been waiting for it for months, when we booked our tickets it felt like the day would never come, last week seemed like the longest week EVAH, and now here we are! One more day of work, then a day of cleaning and packing, and we're off! Jeez I'm so excited I might just vom in my still empty suitcase! Oh and Alex, thanks for lending me the suitcase. The preparations were a bit more work than I expected, especially because I wanted everything to be arranged perfectly(OCD light I'd say). So there was all the 'have I got the correct wires and cables for charging and connecting' to worry about, then there was the 'am I bringing a camera or doing it all on my phone' malarkey, then the 'if I ... read more
