‘Merhba guys’ and welcome to my time in Malta By: Marina Wagner-Sanders It was last September when I first came to Malta, a small island of the Mediterranean, in order to study one Semester at the University of Malta. Four months have already passed since then and I have seen and learned a lot about the island, the culture and the mentality of the people here. “Why did you choose Malta for studying?” I was asked this question several times before coming to Malta and honestly I did not really have an answer to that question. Before coming I did not really have an idea about this small island located in the Mediterranean. I guess it was the hope for better weather during the winter semester and the ... read more

Hello everyone It was a good idea to book a window seat for my afternoon flight here- flying over the Alps and then down the coast of Italy I could see Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples with Capri and then over Sicily – there was Mount Etna. And in the arrivals hall massive hugs from my lovely Richard and Catherine – just what I have been waiting for these past 7 months. Their apartment in Sliema is a penthouse on 6th floor with 2 terraces at the front and back – so great views over the rooftops to the harbour and across to Valletta. They live on a main street in Sliema and you can walk in a few minutes to the end of the Point to a nice new shopping mall or walk to ... read more

After choosing from a huge range of internships of AIESEC and getting rejected by some of them, I finally made up my mind and chose Malta. I took a late flight from London to Malta with Air Malta airline. On that night at the Heathrow airport, the staff didn't let me check in because the name I put in the booking form is different from the one in my passport (I booked the ticket the night I finished final exam. I was exhausted then I put Perry on it -_-)'') I did panic. Fortunately, after arguing for half an hour and I managed to prove I am Perry. They finally let me get on the flight. I got on the flight with relief and great excitement as I didn't have any idea about how Malta looks ... read more

The Marfa Peninsula is Malta's final flourish before dipping beneath the water of the Comino Channel. Some of Malta's best diving spot are found along its northern coast. As it happened, i bought a snorkel for 10 euros only and I can't wait to try it! So, I planned to visit Ahrax Point which is at the extreme northeast of Malta (Lonely Planet rates Ahrax Point as the top-one diving and snoekelling point and highly recommends to visit). However, after I got to Cirkewwa and asked the drivers there, I found there are no buses to get to Ahrax Point at all. What I can do is to walk there. I gave up walking as it is too far away and I had to improvise at that moment. Finally I changed my plan to Paradise Bay ... read more

On the road west of the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Temples is a turn-off to Għar Lapsi. The name means "Cave of Ascension". The road winds steeply to the coast and at the end you will find a couple of restaurants and boathouses (It is impossible to get lost here, given this place is very tiny). Right after I got here, I was astonished. What immediately popped up in my mind is "How on earth is the water this clear?!". It is clear enough to see the rocks on the bottom, and even the flocks of fish! This is so amazing! Għar Lapsi is a little cove in the low limestone cliffs which has been converted into a natural lido, with stones steps and iron ladders giving access to the limpid blue water. It is a ... read more

Marsaxlokk is an acient fishing village which is located at the head of Marsaxlokk Bay. Old low-rise houses occupy along the whole waterfront, and a fleet of brightly coloured luzzu (Maltese fishing boats) crowds the habour. Not surprisingly, this place is renowned for its top-notch seafood restaurants. The most interesting thing here is the Sunday Fish Market. As the name suggests, the fish market only opens on Sunday, and yet in the morning until 12pm. How lazy they are! So, I needed to set aside some time for a visit. Finally I spent the whole morning in Marsaxlokk today. When I first got there, what I saw is a series of stalls on both sides of the main road selling daily accessories, toys, decoration.....When I continued walking, I can see the fish market. There are a ... read more

Yesterday we had another chilled day of reading books, splashing in the pool, going to the waterpark and eating lots of food. Today we are going home. I'm currently sitting on the plane after having been delayed for 2.5 hrs and I'm waiting for the stewardess to bring me some dinner :-) I've enjoyed Malta, the swimming pool and waterpark especially, but it has been a bit too touristy for me, mummy and daddy plus the food hasn't been great. Though I'm not sure i want to go home either - I'm looking forward to seeing my friends, but its cold, raining and as I'm 18 months old today I'm going to be potty training this week :-( Lucas x x... read more

I have had a brilliant day - I went to my very first waterpark! This morning we just spent time next to and in the swimming pool. I got to do lots of jumping in and rides/falls from my crocodile. I also made a new friend, a little girl called Rhianna from France I think. She's about 4 and played throwing the ball with me for ages! After lunch and my nap mummy and daddy took me to a waterpark that's on the waterfront at bugibba. They thought I might be a bit small, but I knew they were wrong :-) it was brilliant, there are lots of fountains and cannons and pipes that spray water, plus shower type tubes that water falls from and buckets that get you soaked if you go under at the ... read more

So I'm in Malta. We left Tuesday afternoon and arrived at the hotel in Bugibba at midnight. I had a fun day of riding my cousin Harry's trunki around Norwich airport, running around with a little girl I met there - she's my age and flying in a plane! I really liked looking out the window at all the clouds on this flight and the nice people at Thomas Cook even gave me a seat of my own :-) I wasn't so keen on the takeoff though, it was just SO noisy! Yesterday I spent the day playing in the hotel pools and the little play area. There is a big slide I like in there plus a castle playhouse. My cousin Evie would love it, it's a big castle and it's purple. Mummy and daddy ... read more

My grandmother grew up during the air raids on Malta in WW2, she immigrated to Australia from Malta in 1955 at the age of 13. During World War II, Malta became the most bombed place on earth. At the outbreak of World War II, Malta was Britain’s most important Mediterranean naval base. As such, it was to protect east-west supply lines while blocking the passage between Italy and North Africa. When Mussolini plunged Italy into the war on June 10, 1940, Malta knew for sure that it was destined to play a frontline role. Malta’s worst period of the war was in early 1942, when the air raids never ceased. In April alone, 6700 tons of bombs rained down on the island and on the 15th of that month a special message from the British king, ... read more
