We enjoyed our trip to Malta, we based ourselves in Mellieha Bay, and it was very easy to travel around the country by local bus and very cheap. We only stayed a week, but travelled around, visiting Mosta (an absolute must), Valletta, Comino island, and was also easily able to walk across to see the Popeye village filmset on the west coast. For a good easy week, it is a quiet, relaxing place to visit. My only recommendation would be to hire a taxi on Comino Island as the bus station is in the centre, and journey's go off in all directions, it is difficult to visit more than two places because of the timetables, hiring a taxi means you can explore the little island. ... read more

Malta Photos Europe » Malta » Valletta By Moving edgewaysApril 6th 2007Work provided a few days off in Malta. Valetta harbour (or harbours plural....) is stunning as is the Baroque old town with its neat grid system. Its a peculiar place with the mix of beauty and chaos of Italy but plenty of British influences too (it seems to be where old right-hand drive cars go to die, the only other place in Europe where they can drive on the correct(!) side of the road....) ... read more

Well its official, of all the European Counties we have visited during this last 12 months, Malta is the hands down winner for our fave. The people are the friendliest, the beaches are the bluest, the weather was the warmest and the food was the tastiest. Hows that for a good rap hey, well they deserve it. First of all let me say that it was nothing at all like the picture I had in my head of what Malta would be like. In some parts like Sliema where we stayed, it reminded us of queenslands sunshine coast, it was so commercialised and geared towards tourism, and the development thats going on there is unbelievable. Then there´s the parts like Valetta that remain mostly untouched and are heritage listed so they cant be touched. There´s so ... read more

Alot of people go to Malta for the sun, the diving, the history of the Knights of St John but often miss the amazing beautiful temples there. There are quite a few on the Islands, my favourite is the one mainly photographed here - Hagar Qim. They are said to be the oldest Goddess Temples on the Planet and they certainly create a place of wonder and mystery that you can let your imagination explore. ... read more

The trip to Malta came about simply because I had entered a prize draw through a coffee promotion at work by punching in codes into a website, and entering myself into 5 draws for a pair of tickets to a European destination. Well, somebody up there likes me, because I scooped a pair of return tickets to Malta, and almost instantly, I was boarding a BA flight to Valletta, and arriving with the task of getting from the airport to the hotel armed with a basic map, and no other sense of direction. This proved to be the hardest task of the entire trip, really, despite how simple the map made it look, and once we'd arrived, after taking numerous diversions, and straying well off course, the resort of St. Julians looked lively enough to spend ... read more

Day 88 April 3rd Valetta, Malta Malta was one of my 2 dream destinations, I was thrilled when HAL substituted it, along with a return for us to Athens and Kusadasi. My other desired destination being Reunion in the Indian Ocean and we were in Mayotte which is close and probably similar. We enjoyed learning more about the Knights of St-John. In Rhodes, last September we had toured their previous home, this time, we saw their great STONE fortress, churches and hospital. The St-John Co-cathedral is the most impressive catholic church I have ever visited because of the inlaid coloured marble tomb stones carpeting the whole floor of the church; then there are these 6 metre by 6 metre tapestries which are falling apart because of their great weight- just beautiful. I purchased a silver filigree ... read more

Matt: Since arriving in the UK, I have been surprisingly healthy. While Ed has been battling constant colds and a minor bout of pneumonia, I have mocked his weak constitution and told him that my strong European genes made me better suited to living in cold and wet places. And so it was probably karma when found myself waking up on the morning that we were due to leave for Malta with an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach. The night before I had arrived home late from work and picked up a pizza. Unfortunately our local pizzeria, although making great tasting food, doesn’t have the best hygiene standards and has left us with a queasy feeling the last couple of times we’ve eaten there. I decided to play Russian Roulette with my intestines ... read more

We did many journals over the years that were just sent out as print copies. I am now putting them on this blog site, mostly for our records. I’ve copied the text of the journals pretty much as they were written way-back-when, in this case 2004, so most of you have already read this. The photos, however, should be much better in this format. This was written while we were living in The Netherlands. Settle back and take a walk down memory lane with us to: ... read more

Ok then so what's been happening......well I've been doing some touristy things......I went to Malta for a weekend and caught up with Marita and Paul (sister & husband) as they basked in the last few days of their Grand European tour.....all good things have to end I suppose.....I also managed to see my relatives and grab some sun.....which was great. I suppose that given I had been in Europe 6 months, to not make it to Malta would have been a travesty. I, with Marita and Paul stayed with my Uncle Charlie (the King of Sleep), Aunty Rosie and cousin Natasha. For me it was the fist time in about 6 years I'd been to Malta and I still love the place. The buses, the pace of life and the friendliness of people. We did a ... read more
