Chapter 7 Siena: Into the Tuscan Hills They waved goodbye to Pisa after some cure for Maya’s hangover by means of grapefruit and caught the 11.18am to Siena via Empoli. Pisa had been interesting enough to visit but they both had a feeling that better was to come. At Empoli, the train was delayed for ten minutes as a local football derby had spewed out all the hooligans onto the station, fortunately none of them boarded our intrepid twosome’s train. There seemed very little difference in both appearance and behaviour between Italian football fans and English football fans, the only real notable difference were the hand gestures, though the meanings of them were pretty universal. After the brief delay, the road or rather the railroad to Siena lay ahead. From the train, the Tuscan hills rolled ... read more

Chapter 6 Livorno - a coast line and nothing more When coming to Pisa, Martin had noticed a beautiful coastline just south of Pisa and thought it may be an idea to visit whilst based at Pisa. Livorno was to become a day trip on a whim, a little side stepping to explore a place they’d never heard of and would never have dreamed of visiting. For breakfast they nipped into the same chocolate bar they had come across the day before, and tasted the delights of a very sweet hot chocolate before catching the train to Livorno. Only 20 minutes by train south of Pisa, they arrived in Livorno, or rather they arrived at a pretty average looking station about 1 mile from the town. Livorno is to be found on the Tyrrhenian Sea on ... read more

Chapter 5 Leaning on a tower Breakfast and left Rome on the 9.46am IC train to Pisa. The train was delayed by 10 minutes, having swapped seats once, they ended up in a compartment with a family (very sweet, well behaved kids and friendly parents). The train took them through Rome’s suburbs, heading north along the Mediterranean, past Cievativiechhia, Cerosetto, Livorno and 3 hours later, they arrived at Pisa Centrale. Maya had been here before and knew a cheap hostel right by the tower, so they headed through the pretty streets, over the bridge and after Martin had changed his shoes, they arrived at the Piazza di Miraculi. First the hostel, Albergo Gronchi (H: a very plain, very decrepit, but very cheap hotel that stays full, with a great view of the Tower. The weak springed beds ... read more

Chapter 3 Leave the Pope for another day The plan had been to get up early and go to the Vatican to see if the Pope was in, however they had rather underestimated the effect of the day before and did not rise until 11.15am so the Pope shall have to be patient and wait another day. (Rumour had it, that he’d been feeling a little under the weather anyhow). So what was the revised plan then? Having missed breakfast they headed for the Piazza del Popolo on the underground. The system seemed a little run down and overcrowded, much like the tube really, though unlike the tube, air-conditioning was provided. Piazza del Popolo, 4 stops on Line A (there’s only two lines, and oddly enough the other one is called Line B). Tourist site 4: ... read more

Chapter 2 Get off my boyfriend’s gonads you Roman bastard! It is hard to believe for those who know them, but after a restless night for Martin (a lack of pillows, he needs at least two puffed-up pillows to get a decent sleep), and a great sleep for Maya (Valium induced), they arose at 9.00am for breakfast. A hearty Italian affair with the best cups of coffee, a perfect start! Though judging by the other residents, it seems travelling out of season entails having to share hotels with geriatrics and children. So what was the plan? Head for Santa Maria Maggiore// Roman Forum/ Palatine Hill/Capitoline Hill and see how we get on? Didn’t seem too ambitious, so off they trundled out of the hotel, towards the station. Maya was still a little spaced out but was ... read more

Chapter 1 From the crooked spire to the eternal city Italy The alarm clock rings the changes, time to rise sleepy heads! It was a wet, miserable Derbyshire morning, as our travellers are awoken by the sound of an annoying cockerel squawking, indicating they should be waking up. The annoying part of this wake up call was not the fact that it was a cockerel as such, it was the fact that the blasted bird noises were digital and emanating from the little black box next to the bed. Furthermore it’s batteries were beginning to fail giving it the sound of a dying cockerel squawking its last triumphant cock-adoodle-doo. Chesterfield, a fairly small Derbyshire town, famous only for its crooked spire and the fact their football team once reached a semi-final of the FA Cup provided ... read more

Milan is beautiful and has many other sights but I remember this Gallery for 3 main things: 1. Got a haircut nearby before going in a tiny little hairdresser in a side alley before going but one of the best cuts I've had anywhere. 2. Leanardos "Portrait of a Musician" there is some dispute as to whether it is really a Da Vinci but very intricate small wood panel painting the thing is compared to the "Last Supper" which is on a church wall and a bit faded (the church was bombed in WWII they had to protect it with sandbags plus the paint he used deteriorated quickly), this looks like it was painted yesterday and you can walk right up to it. There are security guards watching of course but compared to the Mona Lisa ... read more

These days are gold. Every morning we enjoy pizza and beer outside Antonio’s corner pizzeria. St Peter stands humbly in front with all the saints surrounding. Nuns climb up to the fountain and partake of the cool spring. We see The Polizia who love the ladies. We see triple parked smart cars and fantastic drivers; we see Michelangelo’s ceiling, Raphael’s Athens, Caesar’s Coliseum, The Corinthian Arches, and the feet of our Lord being kissed by pilgrims. We see the ancient city where adulteresses were buried alive and defeated Jews were paraded with their ark. Ancient buildings and waterfalls leap at us from every corner, old men play chess, single mothers beg and Moroccans sell Louis Vuitton bags. The subway gets us there in no less than ten minutes. Rome is grand. We wait patiently in line ... read more

Queria tanto comemorar o Halloween!

We're now at the sun-drenched beaches of Italy's hidden Cinque Terre: five perfectly preserved fishing villages, surrounded by vineyards and the sea. We'll make Vernazza our home base. Cinque Terre — Ahh, time for a 'vacation from our vacation.' You couldn't see a museum here even if you wanted to! This is simply traditional Italy, with nothing to do but hike through the vineyards that connect the five villages, hang out on the beaches, swim, and lounge around the town with the locals. ... read more
