Venice was a blast. We cruised into its beautiful harbor early one morning and were greeted by a strange sight: a large beautiful city busy with foot traffic and boats along its waterfront, but not a vehicle in sight anywhere! Mile after mile of beautiful old buildings seemly perched directly atop the water, interspersed with canals alive with pole-driven gondolas, taxis (motorboats) and buses (larger boats, like a small ferry). The effect was a bit like Catfish Row in Charleston suddenly dragged out into the harbor. After the ship docked in an industrial area, we promptly took a smaller boat directly to the heart of the old city, the Doge’s Palace on the Plaza of St. Mark’s Basilica. The place and the old cathedral, both built hundreds of years ago, stand side by side. Our Venetian ... read more

Have been wandering around Pompeii for the past hour. It's amazing archaelogically of course, but also from the perspective of humanity. Everything is so well preserved that it's quite easy to play my little game-all I have to do is duck off the beaten path into a house and I'm in someone's yard, someone's kitchen. I've been wandering in the rich part of town, where the houses large and airy, full of beautiful mosaics and fountains and deep wells against the dry season. A lot of the really amazing things have been taken to the museum, so everything's a bit more bare, but you can still imagine the lords of the city commissioning these artisans to spend hours beautifying their houses. It's also a bit sobering to compare the tiny cells of the poor to these ... read more

Cinque Terre was very beautiful just like a postcard, 5 little villages with colourful houses jotting out from the cliffs its difficult for me to explain in words soon i will put some photos on this site so you can see. It was so cosy that it felt like i was walking in someones house, the locals went about their business and the tourists walked around with their rick steves books in hand. I was so lucky on be there during the week and had a few moments wandering around feeling like the only tourist there. It must be crazy during the high season. On the second day i hiked between the 5 villages, a relatively easy hike and i just followed the path. The place is World Heritage protected and tourists have to pay 3 ... read more

Il Papa- “I have looked for you and now you are here for me” (with reference to the thoughts and opinions in email corrispondence with several people, Italian and not, on this topic) Shamefully, I am one of those Americans that does not have more than the basic understanding of US History, no less the complicated relationships within the story of world history that have changed and modified our understanding of human civilization (and of truth). I cannot, however, skip touching upon a very historic event which has occurred in Italy this past month, just because I am not confident or well-versed in politics, theology and history. We all admire these grandiose and magnificent architectural and artistic monuments, churches, fortresses, palazzos. We walk in with our heads already tilted, hushed, some sign the cross in front ... read more

Last night we were at a rather loose end after getting back. After some hemming and hawing, we ventured out for food. One of the things on my list for Firenze was watching the sunset from the Ponte Vecchio. Check. Probably one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. I think this was one of the Moments, surprisingly few and far between, when I realize, Wow, I'm in Italy. After seeing Florence spread out below my feet like a carpet, after pedalling through land that seems like the original source of sustenance, after pressing an olive branch in my book, after that last dizzying descent into the city, this was the ultimate Moment. After we lost the light, we wandered back, and then wedged ourselves into the pub across the street from the hotel. A ... read more

Still in florence, have slowed down abit i was feeling so trashed when i arrived here so caught up on sleep and now feeling great. The lonely planet says that florence can seriously overhelm and its true there is something to look at on almost every block, tons of museums and cathedrals and monuments. The weather was so windy and rainy for the first two days so i didnt do much, this hostel is great and i have meet two nice american girls and we went for dinner and drinks. Yesterday morning i went to Pisa just for the photo opportunity at the leaning tower and then in the afternoon to a beautiful little town called Lucca, it was great walking around in the middle of the day all the shops are closed and everyone is ... read more

what a great day it was today. got up so early. we had to be on the bus at 7am, so breakfast at 6.30. needless to say, no party for me last night - trying to get over my cold. anyway, got the train in to rome, because our tour buses aren't allowed to drive in rome. very interesting experience on the train - so packed!! i'ver never been claustrophobic but i was this morning. once i got off it was fine though. we had to change trains twice - i'm so glad our tour manager was with us coz i would've had absolutely no idea where i was going!! one of the guys in our group caught a young girl trying to pick his pockets - she didn't get anything though. i locked my backpack ... read more

I didn't die! Seriously though, we were probably climbing steadily for 20 minutes. I wasn't a wuss and biked the whole way, with a few stops for pictures. When we finally reached Fiesole, we found a museum and archaelogical site of Roman ruins on top of Etruscan ruins. We wandered through the museum and then had lunch overlooking the ruins, surrounded by flowers and cherry blossoms and the cypresses. Minus the barbarian hordes against which the place was built, the countryside was awe-inspiring. We could see the Duomo we had climbed earlier. It kind of minimalized the 400-odd steps. The way back down we passed a few houses - ok castles - that I decided I had to own or at least stay in. These weren't hotels, or agriturismo's, they were just houses that people lived ... read more

ok, here i am in italy. i'm surprised i have this little bit of time but i do. ok. now to update you on what's been going on over here. after sightseeing in nice yesterday, we went back to the campsite and had dinner (roast - can you believe it!!) then... a rather big night in the bar at our campsite. it was all very fun and light hearted. everyone was in such a good mood. i gave myself a curfew of 12 (and i only stayed out til 12.30 so that was pretty good). everything was still going very strong and there were a lot of weary people on the bus. (most people left at 4.30 so i was very good in comparison). it was so much fun though!! today was a big travelling day ... read more

It's been a bustling, bang-up couple of days, and now I admit I'm just plain tired. We're in the London Stansted airport waiting for a 2:20PM flight to Shannon (it's 9:15AM now). And I'm EXHAUSTED. We went to Pompeii for the day yesterday (Sunday) and didn't get back to our hostel in Rome until 2AM. That wouldn't be so bad except that this morning we boarded a bus for the Rome Ciampino airport at 4:30AM. No sleep for us, except for maybe a 30-minute nap and any broken periods of sleep on the Rome-London plane! So, a re-cap of what's happened since our first day in Florence: Saturday morning, of course, we were in Florence. We slept in in our comfy beds at Hostel Pio X (just a brief walk from the city centre), which was ... read more
