Begin with a walking tour to see the Piazza della Signoria, the Duomo and Santa Croce. Shop for leather and take in fabulous views from Piazzale Michelangelo. This evening, an opportunity to enjoy the colourful Florentine nightlife. Woke up this morning feeling great - not even tired as I usually am. Had breakfast at the campsite before heading into the city on the coach. Met our guide at Sante Croche, the church where Galileo and Michelangelo are burried. He showed us the street that Michelangelo grew up on, then walked us around the main square where Michelangelo's David originally stood and a replica now stands. Went into the cathedral at Piazza del Duomo and saw the massive fresco painted inside the dome. There was a 24 hour analogue clock which I thought was cool, which ... read more

Hello everyone, I've had a busy and fun time since Spain. I was in Nice for a few days. The first night I was there, I met up with some other Canadians and we went out to find a nightclub. Apparently in Nice, it is easier to find 1)rowdy teens, 2)prostitutes on the waterfront, and 3) gay-only nightclubs. However, we did find one eventually and I will never ever complain about paying cover charges in Edmonton again. It is way more expensive in Europe, about 15 euros. After Nice, I headed to La Spezia in Italy, and stayed there for a few days. I did some day trips out to Cinque Terre and to Pisa. I did buy the required tacky fridge magnet souvenir from Pisa, so no worries :) Right now, I just got into ... read more

We left Seattle today at 11:05am on a flight to Cincinnati and then on to Rome. We we're a bit worried about our connection in Cincinnati as the flight from Seattle was scheduled to arrive there only 20 minutes before the flight to Rome, and we had to get seat assignments at the gate in Cincinnati. Connections one of the joys of flying lol. In this case it worked out as the rest of the trip would, fantastic. We left Seattle on time and arrived in Cincinnati a little ahead. Hurrying to the gate we found it crowded. I went to the counter and gave our tickets to them. After some playing with his computer they handed me boarding passe. I almost passed out when i looked at them and saw seats 1A and 1B. On ... read more

Rome is very busy and crazy just crossing the road is fun the romans dont stop on the crossings and i hesitate too much so it takes me ages to cross. But Rome has been great and the people are very passionate and lively. Yesterday I most of the touristy places saw the Colosseum, Roman Forum, The Vittoriano, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, I just walked between each. Today I went to Trastevere a much quieter more local feeling place just walked around and saw another lovely Cathedral. I am staying near the Termini which is romes main train station which is well dodgy at night so I have been coming back to the hostel early and talking with the others staying here. Staying at this lovely hostel called the Beehive, the best one so far. The ... read more

Fortress Towns-wandering the winding way to Monteriggione and Volterra *Never sit in the back seat of a car in Tuscany if you’re “going for a drive”. *The best restaurants are not found be looking them up in the Italian Yellow Pages. Just take a drive at sunset through the wild woods of the Tuscan hills and you’ll find, in the middle of no where, lights illuminating the way to a rustic villa, 20 cars lined up, and the smell of local cuisine, maybe wild boar and roasted potatoes, or home made ribollita and crusty bread, already winding it’s way to YOU. Monteriggione So Saturday morning, after a pancake breakfast (made from a mix that she saves for me), Salima, Riccardo and I head out for the day. I take this opportunity to watch the Tuscan countryside ... read more

I had a lot of fun today. We got up kinda early and took the train to Rome for the day. Unfortunately the Sistine Chapel was closed (until Monday!! grrr when they swear in the new Pope). But we walked to the Spanish Steps (which we aren't sure how they became so famous) and to the Trevi fountain. It was big and really cool. We threw coins in and then I read that you are supposed to throw them in while facing away over your shoulder. So we did it again :) Lunch was good too. We just picked a place randomly. I go some pizza and Adam got Pear & Balsalmic vinegar Risotto. I really liked his dish - the pears were yummy! We also went to the Pantheon which was neat. There is a ... read more

Today was a lot of fun, but my feet hurt so bad!! We got up this morning (no alarm) and headed toward the Uffizi - but the line was incredibly long. We walked around and at the Palazzo Vecchio and Loggia della Signora we saw the replica of the David, and there was a big square with lots of people. We walked to (and over) the Ponte Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti. We went and walked through the massive garden (Gardino di Boboli). It was pretty and had a lot of fountains and statues to look at. The sun was also out today, which was very nice :) I hope it stays for the rest of our trip! The garden was mostly uphill, so we did a lot of walking. Afterwards we passed by the Uffizi ... read more

An American in the Orient-smores and sushi for dinner Thursday night, my friend Bonnie, who is from Hong Kong, China, hosted a “dolci e apperitivi” potluck dinner. Her boyfriend is a Florentine who now runs the family resturant, along with his 3 children. Invited to this dinner were 8 other female Japanese students, all of whom have (including Bonnie and I) in the past or are currently in the same Italian language class. Although the rules had been set and Japanese was “outlawed”, the girls slipped more than once (and even then a few were from Osaka or another part of Japan and were speaking a dialect the others may not have known.) Seeing this group of dark haired, fresh-faced, handsome group of young women, you’d never know that several of them were over 40. Looks ... read more
