6 days later..hello again. Unfortunately, nothing's really been going on so there's not much to blog about. Since it's been Carnivale, we've gone out a few times with masks on and seen people with ridiculous costumes and more masks. It's been a two week celebration here for sure. People are out and dressed in costume every night it seems! Last night, with little persuading from a friend, I decided to go out to celebrate Mardi Gras even though I have two midterms to study for... At least I have all day today to do that since they're both on Thursday. When would I have the chance to do that again? Of course I had to go. The whole "nothing's-happening-so-no-blogs" excuse will all change starting this Friday the 24th!! Here are the official plans as of right ... read more

Welp, 8 days later, I swear I am alive. School work is getting legit and midterms start next week. Not to mention, I have a giant Italian test on Thursday that I really need to study for tonight or there will be a problem... Everyone who says study abroad classes are "fluffy" and "GPA boosters" and "easy A's" did not come to Umbra. I do more homework here than at Bonaventure. This week has been pretty busy homework-wise. Last weekend we stayed in Perugia but made the most of it in every way possible. We went to a different club every night and got a meter long pizza on Saturday. The earliest I got home over the weekend was 4:30am Sunday. This, and the STILL miserable weather are most likely the reasons for the surprise head ... read more

Complete change of plans! I decided not to go to La Spezia because, since I've been there many times, I decided to save the money for something else. I also decided not to go to Budapest because the flights became very expensive and I did not want to go badly enough that I was willing to pay extra. This past weekend I went to Florence with one of my roommates and a girl in my Human Development class. I had a lot of fun. The hostel that we stayed at, Luna Rossa, was very nice, which had been my main concern. I bought two bags for myself and one for my mom. I knew I was going to spend a lot of money, which is why I am kind of glad that Budapest didn't work out. ... read more

This post won't be long since I'm getting ready for class, but I thought I'd update before my trip to Florence this weekend! Tuesday evening I was in class and looked outside and couldn't believe what I saw...little flurries of snow! My professor promised us that it never snows in Perugia. Hmm, guess he was sadly mistaken. Well flurries are harmless, when I woke up yesterday morning and looked outside, I didn't know if I was in Italy or back in Buffalo. Except it was clear that I was definitely not in Buffalo because they were enjoying 50 degree weather yesterday. I walked to school in inches of snow...I guess next time I'll have to pack my snow boots. And I thought this was my year without a winter, ha wishful thinking. Today, there's less snow ... read more

I know I said I most likely wouldn’t post another blog before I went to Florence. I guess I just assumed I wouldn’t do anything in between that time, but I lied. I couldn’t let these pictures go unshared. Today we woke up to the one form of weather I hate most: SNOW. And I’m not talking the cute flurries we had in class last night, I’m talking a blizzard. From our window we saw cars parked, covered in snow, an accident with 2 more cars and people shuffling along with umbrellas. What we didn’t see was the great view we normally get to enjoy every morning when we open our window…it was just white. All day I have been mentally complaining and hating everyone who told me last year it snowed, but it was one ... read more

Happy Wednesday! Even though it’s 12am on Wednesday right now. Anyway. This week has been so far so good! On Monday in my Food History class we had a surprise eggplant workshop! The syllabus said there was supposed to be a wine tasting that day, and a quiz the next day, but that was some reason not the case. I still got a 14/15 on the quiz (stupid mistake on my part) even though I came in expecting a wine tasting. So we take the quiz, and then continue on to our lesson. In the middle of that, the guy who works in the little grocery store right next to school runs in the room, smiling and yelling random things to all of us in Italian. It seriously seemed staged to me, but definitely wasn’t. He ... read more

I'm not doing a blog entry every day anymore. I have classes Monday - Thursday, so those days I usually don't do anything and have nothing to write about. I'll try to write once a week. This weekend I'm going to Florence and La Spezia! I can't wait!!! Two places that I love. Then in about two weeks I'm probably going to Budapest, which will be awesome! I need to buy a dictionary though because none of us speak the language. Hopefully the hostel won't be too sketchy, that (and getting lost) are my two biggest fears. But I really can't wait! I also am trying to convince my friend to go to Sicily with me, and have to figure out when we would do that. If we don't go over spring break, I am going ... read more

This weekend has been pretty slow. On Thursday we braved the city ourselves. Just the 3 of us went out for drinks at Dempsey’s, our other peeps are out of town. Luckily, when we were at a bar a big group of Umbra students came in, so we ended up talking to a bunch of people then heading to another place called LunaBar. It was pretty fun, lots of dancing to songs in Italian, Spanish and English. Of course we had to take a trip to the illegal bakery before heading home. Did I talk about those already? A bakery that's open after hours, when businesses are supposed to closed, they don't give out reciepts and you usually have to knock on the closed door to get service. I had another bambolini con nutella. Seriously words ... read more

Finally back to blogging! After another failed attempt to make a timely entry, here I am a week later writing about last week’s adventure. Last week, my roommates and I took a day trip to Pisa and learned that there really isn’t a whole lot to do there besides check out that leaning tower. In fact, Pisa smells pretty bad if I do say so myself. After wandering around probably the entire city we finally found the tower, and I had to laugh because the first thing I noticed was all the people scattered across the lawn doing the same pose. And that’s exactly what we came to do! We had to take the classic pictures pretending to hold up the Leaning Tower of Pisa because a trip to Italy would be incomplete without it. After ... read more

So I Skyped with my sister, Maria, last night for over an hour and it made me miss her so much! I thought it was pretty funny when she told me she read this blog and noticed that the only foods I’ve talked about eating are pizza and pasta. Hi Maria, if you’re reading this! You are 100% correct. Basically the only things I have eaten here ARE pizza, pasta, risotto and gelato. Italian staples, yes, but I’m beginning to wonder if I’ll ever eat anything else here! Like are we passing some secret restaurant every day that we don't know about?? Yesterday was our friend Alex’s birthday. He’s another friend from Bonaventure. We were at a friend’s house 2 nights ago so we could celebrate at midnight with him. After, we went to 2 bars ... read more
