Quasi finito! Dernier jour a Florence!!!

Since Florence is about an hour and a half by train from Pisa we had to go to help hold up the leaning tower. We just hopped on the train, held it up, got some pictures, ate some pizza in Pisa and then went back to Florence. Not that much to say, it looked really cool and it's weird that it stands crooked and they still let people up on it.... read more

My second day in Florence I decided to see the famous leaning tower of Pisa. I was accompanied by my very nice roommate in the hostel named Sylvia. The only problem is that Sylvia is from Argentina and only speaks Spanish. I took three years of high school Spanish which came out retirement that day. We ended up having a great time together. As the day wore on I remembered more and more. What we didn't remember we looked up in the dictionary and what the dictionary didn't have or we were too lazy to look up, we acted out to each other. Quite funny to watch I'm sure. It took us an hour and a half to get to Pisa which is a nice but very small town. As the train pulled into the station, ... read more

On our way to Florence, we decided to make a quick stop over in Pisa to see the famous Leaning Tower! We were only there for a few hours, but it was worth it to see the famous landmark! Since this entry was so short, I'll add a little blurb about some things we've found interesting about the TV while here (yes, even while vacationing in Europe we've been unable to avoid the TV): *Every city we've been in so far has had BBC News and/or CNN International so we've been able to keep up with the happenings in the US with the hurricane! I hope everyone's families and friends are doing okay! Please send me an email at kkdonald@cfl.rr.com and let me know! *MSNBC shows Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien with European guests! Since most ... read more

I'm glad the people who designed the Busabout routes were considerate enough to make an exception to the usual scheduling policy for Pisa. Normally, day stops are in-and-out affairs, but we had an hour and a half in Pisa. That was actually perfect to wander around, take pictures, and have lunch. It was nice to see the oh so famous architectural screw-up in person, and yes, we all did the obligatory photos. Entry on the real treat - Cinque Terre, will be done later.... read more

(written during a weekend trip to italy four years ago while on assignment in munich, germany) June 2, 2000. Onward to Pisa, Italy. Afternoon. We were quietly settled on our train seats when someone in uniform asked for our tickets. Confident that we were holding a Eurail pass that could get us anywhere, we handed them out. It turned out that Pisa is not among the stops in our pass. Our lapse resulted in a fine of several thousand lira. They should start getting those passes translated in English because our wallets can no longer afford to suffer another fine. Not to mention our pride. Learning from our mistake, we immediately purchased a ticket back to Florence as soon as we arrived in Pisa. We’re planning to end our tour with a visit to Rome tomorrow ... read more

Chapter 6 Livorno - a coast line and nothing more When coming to Pisa, Martin had noticed a beautiful coastline just south of Pisa and thought it may be an idea to visit whilst based at Pisa. Livorno was to become a day trip on a whim, a little side stepping to explore a place they’d never heard of and would never have dreamed of visiting. For breakfast they nipped into the same chocolate bar they had come across the day before, and tasted the delights of a very sweet hot chocolate before catching the train to Livorno. Only 20 minutes by train south of Pisa, they arrived in Livorno, or rather they arrived at a pretty average looking station about 1 mile from the town. Livorno is to be found on the Tyrrhenian Sea on ... read more

Chapter 5 Leaning on a tower Breakfast and left Rome on the 9.46am IC train to Pisa. The train was delayed by 10 minutes, having swapped seats once, they ended up in a compartment with a family (very sweet, well behaved kids and friendly parents). The train took them through Rome’s suburbs, heading north along the Mediterranean, past Cievativiechhia, Cerosetto, Livorno and 3 hours later, they arrived at Pisa Centrale. Maya had been here before and knew a cheap hostel right by the tower, so they headed through the pretty streets, over the bridge and after Martin had changed his shoes, they arrived at the Piazza di Miraculi. First the hostel, Albergo Gronchi (H: a very plain, very decrepit, but very cheap hotel that stays full, with a great view of the Tower. The weak springed beds ... read more

As there are beginnings, there are endings for everything; Alpha and Omega. Our time in Italy is ticking away; and the next thing we knew, we had get off our couch and gathered our belongings for the last time from our apartment, a place we called home for the last three months. We drank our last water from a cold Roman fountain, we saw San Pietro for the last time from a distance, and we walked along the Roman black cobble street stones, headed out to the Metro Ottaviano/San Pietro Metro station that would bring us to Termini station to continue on with our lives. Sad was not a good adjective to describe our feeling, but I couldn’t help it by feeling so miserable. At the same time, anxious started to fill me in as we ... read more
