I made a quick trip to Palazzo Adriano with a friend of mine from Catania. I really wanted to slow down and 'absorb', but it's so hard to when someone else is waiting, and wanting to hurry !!! I must go back. This is the village my grandfather's parents came from. I recall finding the town hall, where they have the vital statistics. I wanted so much to index my grandfather's name (Alessi ) and his mother's name (Grana) The place was closed, so we waited around for him to return.... finally we had to go, so I never got to check any thing out ! (guess this is why I like solo travel so much more, I can do my own thing ) ... read more

January 2008. Hello again all - As you can see from the date below, this was trip was taken a while ago. Please disregard this if you already received it, however I have added more photos. In my travel blog site it indicated that this travel blog was never "published," which I was sure it had been. However, just in case, I'm "publishing" again. Please forgive the inconvenience if you have already received this journal. Sicily, Italy October 2006 Note: Click on photos to enlarge or on "more" to enlarge and read the rest of the text. Okay, okay, so I’m tackling the easy one first, you are right. The South Africa-Botswana-Namibia-Zambia journal is in the works. As you might appreciate, a three- month road trip around southern Africa needs more thought, then condensing and finally ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Palermo September 22nd 2006

Geo: 38.0699, 13.176Had a nice sleep. I didn't want to wake up! I was dreaming about Chinese food. Dim sum ... mmm ... mmm ... For breakfast, I walked to a bakery. Sadly, no dim sum was available :(I had a cream-filled croissant. It was only OK. But then I had a little bit of hazelnut heaven - a hollow tube stuffed with chocolate hazelnut cream. It was sweet, but delectable. I wanted to sit and have a coffee with it, but I didn't have time before the train to Palermo. I used the Internet when I got there. I needed to kill time until my stated arrival time at the hostel - after getting burned in Agrigento, I decided to wait a little bit before going. There won't be any cheap Internet cafes in Sardinia ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Segesta September 19th 2006

Geo: 37.7986, 12.8344Off to Segesta. I hopes it's not disappointing like Agrigento's temples. Had an amazing coconut yogurt for breakfast. Italians do it right! Met a couple from Milwaukee at Segesta (Scott and Chris). The temple was quite interesting, but my bus did not leave until 13:00, so I had lots of time to kill (3 hours). We hiked up to the Greek Theatre afterward. We were hoping to beat the tour group to the top (And we just did! A moral victory!). We sat at the coffee shop back at the temple for a little bit. Scott mentioned that it must be less stressful to train through Europe (versus the driving that they were doing). Chris pointed to my calloused, weathered, and cracked feet and responded "Have you seen his feet??!?!?" We chatted with some ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Trapani September 18th 2006

Geo: 37.7986, 12.5715Had to catch an early bus to Trapani. I thought that breakfast was offered at 8:00, but it was actually 8:30. In that case I could've quickly ate, paid, gotten my passport, and then ran off to the bus. I managed to track down the owner with the help of someone else staying there and practically ran uphill to the bus stop (15 minutes!) with my big-ass backpack. My legs felt like Jello after. I ran out of water last night ... I paid for the mistake of not having more this morning after the sprint to the station. Used the "bathroom" when the bus made a rest stop. Not really a bathroom - see pictures. Bought a tiny little juice at the rest stop, but it wasn't enough. Of course, I was too ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Agrigento September 17th 2006

Geo: 37.1792, 14.3849Overstuffed myself at breakfast again. Too good, too many choices! Leftover macedonia was available, but nobody touched it! Must have been the guilt. We all went to the bus stop for Catania. On the bus, Jill noticed a Palermo direct bus. Maryam and Sheree ran off to take that one, instead. Jill and I went to Catania (her to the airport and me to transfer for Agrigento). Grabbed a slice of pizza and a cheese and ham bun. I need to start cutting back and detox - too much good food recently! At the bus station a guy was begging for gas money to drive to another town. I gave him 30 cents because he was dodgy looking. He had a look of disgust on his face. I should've taken it back - beggars ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Siracusa September 16th 2006

Geo: 36.6185, 14.9894I woke up early before the girls did - did a little reading while I waited for them. A little difficult to do in semi-darkness. Breakfast - 2 different cakes, apricot pie, assorted yogurt (Italians make great yogurt!), rolls, coffee (very good), and cereal (cocoa puffs for me!). A Japanese lady asked if I was Japanese. I love how Asian minorities always look at me and somehow see their race in me. I'm like the Swiss-Army knife of Asian people - multi-purpose. The girls noticed her eating a peach and asked the B&B worker for one. Only, it wasn't from the B&B. The lady offered it to us. We declined, but she kept insisting - after awhile it would seem rude if we DIDN'T take it. Then the B&B lady showed us a huge ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Siracusa September 15th 2006

Geo: 36.6185, 14.9894I killed time until the bus to Siracusa. I traveled with the girls that I kept running into last night (Jill - Ohio, Sheree and Maryam - both from California). All three are doing their master's degrees (international relations) in Bologna this year.I sat around the hostel for a bit and then we all sat and had coffee (and an arancini for me - the "breakfast of champions", as Sheree put it) at the bus station waiting for it to depart. We changed buses in Catania - it didn't look very nice. Perhaps I won't stop there later on when I go to Agrigento.Grabbed a coke and a ham/cheese panini. I never understand this - it's already been grilled but when they sell it they grill it again, drying it out. Why not just ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Taormina September 14th 2006

Geo: 37.7986, 15.2522Met a couple of Parisian girls at breakfast (Anne-Sophie and Alice) and took the funicular with them to Isola Bella. A beautiful spot ... too bad I didn't bring a camera! Two coves are separated by a partially submerged path that links the beach with Isola Bella. Very unique and very nice. The beach is gravelly and it was cloudy at times. But when the sun came out it was quite the sight. The girls were nice but we had little in common. It just wasn't the same as Split with Emilie and Aude :(It was funny last night - for the first time ever I was the only guy at a hostel. One of the workers commented that I was the luckiest guy on Earth. Now if only it was a hostel filled ... read more
