Sicily may as well be its own country. People here are Sicilian first and Italian second. They are fiercely proud of their culture, food and traditions. If you say to them that you love Sicily, thay arent the least surprised as they love it too. However, if you are after an experience that is unforgettable, head to Palermo, Sicily. **** Have you ever been in Italy in the summer months of June, July or August?? For those who have, including me, you will know that it is full of tourists. Places such as Florence, Rome, Venice and the Amalfi coast are just packed. Dont get me wrong, its impossible to not enjoy Italy, but there are a lot of people sharing the country with you!! Thats what great about Sicily. Yes, its still busier than ... read more

OK - This is a long one - but worth the read and check out the photos. Off we go for our Italian adventure, Mimi, finbar and myself. Arrive in Pisa at some ungodly hour with no accommodation to be found, as we find over the next week, taking Finbar with us was a wise decision with his accommodation hunting being gold. Good nights sleep and off to Cinque Terre where we spent the next 5 days exploring the 5 villages cut into the cliff faces. Our hostel was amazingly positioned at the very top of one of the villages Montrose, surrounded by terraced lemon orchids, church bells and views that you swear were digitally enhanced. We also shot up to Portafino and Portavenza for a couple of day trips. Portafino was wonderful and the ... read more

Back in January, after we had been in Ireland for about two weeks, my friend Kat sent me a facebook message declaring she had found cheap tickets to Trapani, Sicily for a weekend in March. Being in the mood (as I always am) to jump on a plane to basically anywhere, I booked a Ryanair flight along with four other API girls. We didn’t really know much about our destination - Of course I had heard of Sicily, and my friend Katie, who is a quarter Sicilian, was extremely excited to see where her family was from. That was enough for us. Thus, come March 7th, our Sicilian adventure began. We had a late afternoon flight out of Dublin, so when we landed in Trapani it was already dark outside. We promptly de-planed, did a ... read more

Why did we choose Sicily? It was actually because the flights were really cheap so we thought "why not?". We had read about the place just before booking the tickets and it sounded really nice, but after that we didn't worry at all, so a month later when we landed in Palermo we didn't really know where to go - we forgot our travel guide at home (very smart!). We got ripped off by a taxi driver who charged us 50 Euros to take us to the hotel (it should have cost 30 Euros) and the hotel was only 5 min from the airport as it was stated on the website. Needless to say we were feeling a bit annoyed on our first morning (mainly Axe). We went back to the airport to rent a ... read more

"JONNY - GIVE MY NUNNO A BIG KISS FOR ME" Had some sad news last week with my Cousin Jonny in Sicily Passing Away. I was but 9 weeks off seeing him on my way through Italy. But as we all know the best laid plans....and all that. Anyway jumped on a plane Sunday morning at 4am to arrive in Sicily late Sunday afternoon. I was picked up from the airport by My Cousin Charlie, Alfio and his girlfriend Lisa. Due to a lack of understanding with the Sicilian Language and them with no basic English it was a very quiet trip back to Jonny's house in Montegano, which sits just at the base of Mt Etna. Without going into to many morbid details but they do things a little different in Europe as apposed to ... read more

Dearest one and all - Happy New Year! We hope your holidays were pleasant and that 2007 will bring you a year full of happiness and success, peace and interest. Well as you might imagine, spending the holidays in Sicily was great. Not just great - stupendous, scrumptious, delightful and just about any other positive adjective you’d like to tack on. Granted the trains didn’t run on time, the weather didn’t always cooperate and we didn’t get to visit their famous volcano (Mt. Etna) but you can’t have everything can you? Our trip started off in Catania, one of the larger cities on the island. It is a bit industrial but not lacking in charm. We stayed in a really lovely hostel type guest house in the historic part of town that I would highly recommend ... read more

Gabriel was pissed off that morning. Indeed. The boss was in a rotten mood, and the morning messages at the office did not raise the latter’s spirits. That damn favourite planet of his, the same he spent so much energies and hopes for the future on, even one of his own kids, was a fatiguing and not at all rewarding effort. Just an endless cry of complaints and little common sense. He ended up summoning His own private rainman, Count Negroni, who prescribed a biblical treat of the deadly concoction bearing the same name, and now God was hangover and prone to disaster. ‘Gabriel!!!’ the supreme had called ‘The measure is full. Which is another way to say that I am fucking tired of these humans. Go and announce: I’ll be back, with a vengeance’. ... read more

I made a quick trip to Palazzo Adriano with a friend of mine from Catania. I really wanted to slow down and 'absorb', but it's so hard to when someone else is waiting, and wanting to hurry !!! I must go back. This is the village my grandfather's parents came from. I recall finding the town hall, where they have the vital statistics. I wanted so much to index my grandfather's name (Alessi ) and his mother's name (Grana) The place was closed, so we waited around for him to return.... finally we had to go, so I never got to check any thing out ! (guess this is why I like solo travel so much more, I can do my own thing ) ... read more
