Our first port, Messina, Sicily. We had planned a ship tour to The Godfather Mansion. This was cancelled though and we did not find another ship tour we wanted. So, we slept in a bit, enjoyed breakfast in the Windjammer then off to see the city. The ship docks very close in and you don't have far to walk to get out of the area and about a block up to begin seeing the views. As we walked toward the main part of the city, we see horse drawn carriages. These carry several people, have a tour guide and the price is right at E 15. It was our second day and we were ready to try out the restaurants and explore the quiet village. There is no early bird in Sicilly. Restaurants do not generally open until 8:30pm and there is a big siesta during the day. Nice life. We chose this village thinking there might be ancestors still in the village of Piraino. The pizza was delicious. Of course dining was one of my favorite things about the trip!... read more

Saturday (Sabato) Agosto 16 After a relatively painless two short flights (Venice to Rome, Rome to Catania), I arrived in Catania on a warm sunny day, although my clothes were still a little damp from Venice. I was becoming more nervous as I grew closer to my destination, as I had not been able to get a hold of my friends in Sicily, and the dialect in Sicily was strong, and the amount of people who spoke English was slim indeed.I managed to get out of the airport, get onto a bus, get the train station, and get on a train for Gioiosa Marea.
