Gold Star Three : The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno was one of the highlights over the Christmas period. It was planned in the 1850s in an inhabited area and lies now in an area not far from the centre of Genoa. It is one of the largest historical cemeteries in Europe, full of amazing statues and beautiful ornaments with sculptures in all directions. There are also many monuments which commemorate representative characters of history, culture and arts, both national and local. ... read more

Nervi is one of the suburbs of Genoa and is 15 km from the city centre, in the countryside. The walk along the seaside promenade is called Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi and follows cliffs and beaches along the way. There are also four museums in Nervi. There is Museo Giannettino Luxoro with clock exhibits, The Wolfsoniana which houses architectural drawings and sketches and Galleria d'Arte Moderno with famous 19th and 20th century paintings. There is also a park called Parchi di Nervi.... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Moneglia October 31st 2019

We managed to find a very very isolated place, on the side of a hill...price is right, Wifi is great, a functioning TV, VERY quiet...no other guests, since it is now OFF season...The ride here was terrifying! We made the mistake of driving up from Moneglia, not down from the toll road. A very SCARY road! One and a half lanes and many twists and turns. It is really good that Bill is of the generation that learned to drive a stick shift, because that is what we have. We both think that they have made the gears mesh better, and if he stalls the engine, it restarts itself! After we arrived, we knew that we weren’t driving anywhere in the dark...and then realized that we had no wine, forgot to ask if the water is ... read more

Last week, we spent four nights with Joanne, a lovely and lively SERVAS host in a villa in Buonconvento, Tuscany. Her house has a stone date of 1731, but Joanne has found records of a “building” from at least a hundred years before....most likely a building for animals. Today, it is a traditional 2 story home that shares a courtyard with two other owners. A vintner occupies the largest home and she not only produces wine, but teaches cooking classes. The wine is GUASPARINO (Fattoria Resta) and we have to say that it was one of the BEST red wines we have ever tasted. She often gives a leftover from the cooking class half bottle to Joanne, who shared it with us. This is a second home for Joanne, who holds three passports: English (birth), Canadian ... read more

Hello my friends. I hope you are all well. Noel and I were lucky enough to stay in a lovely apartment only a 5 minute walk north of the main train station in Rome which was super handy for getting out and about in the city. If anyone wants a nice clean place to stay if they visit here, let me know and I'll send details. My only complaint was the lack of a kettle and toaster, which appears to be the norm in Europe. We had a wonderful sunny day in Rome on Saturday and ventured to Saint Peter's square and basilica and it was so gorgeous. We arrived an hour after opening and the security line was already about 200 metres long. Within 15 mins it had grown to 300 metres. It must be ... read more

Day 21 : Thursday 26 September 2019 : Portofino kayak tour Today was a bit of a free day and the sun is out so we decided to do a kayak tour (€210) back to Portofino in the afternoon. ☹ Not as calm as it has been previously but the water is so clear, inviting and warm. The kayak was great, Portofino was so much quieter but 2 hours later I was seasick!. Yep, on a kayak no less, turns out that the girls weren’t far behind me. Still had a great time. Can’t tell you how beautiful the water is. Had to stop and settle the tummy, so we stop at the bar at Paraggi Bay with beautiful views, what else would you do? But I had to have a coke, no wine ☹. Morning ... read more

Day 20 : Wednesday 25 September 2019 : Rapallo and Camogli We headed off today in the other direction and went to Rapallo, which for the largest town in the area was much much lovelier that we expected. We wandered through the marina, and eventually jumped on the train to Camogli (€18 rtn). Oh, its so quaint, the cutest little fishing village. But we’ve discovered that shops here close from 1pm – 4pm, the further north we go, the more this occurs. Wandered around, watched the beach, had some lunch (€20) and gelato before heading back. Decided that after the supermarket pasta and sauce was so good, we’d try some from a pasta seller (€ 20) (no idea what those shops are called). Maybe we got a bad one, but it wasn’t as good as the ... read more

Day 19 : Tuesday 24 September 2019 : Portofino We wandered into the heart of Santa Margherita, and thought about bussing it to Portofino, but decided by the time we worked it out, we could already be there. Besides, it’s another beautiful day in the land of Italy and the sun is shining off the water. Okay, long walk, but so worth it. Paraggi Bay on the way to Portofino was magnificent and should never be missed. If I had to do it over, its definitely worth a swim…just dive on in. Never seen such inviting water, so deep, calm and clear azure blue. You just want to jump in. We decided we would swim on the way back, but you should never wait, take the moment! Magnificent walk over the hill and through the trees ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Santa Margherita Ligure September 23rd 2019

Day 18 : Monday 23 September 2019 : Vernazza to Santa Margharita Goodbye beautiful Cinque Terre, we’re off to Santa Margherita (€25 regional train). It was a very quick train trip just moving an hour along the coast. It’s beautiful, but it was quite a walk (uphill) and we couldn’t find the Airbnb. Found the street. Ella tried to use her limited Italian to communicate with a kind old Italian man that couldn’t speak English who went up and down the hill on his scooter looking for the number. You get to the ‘top’ of the street and around the corner, it gets steeper. I can’t explain the steepness, your knuckles hit the road as you walk up, and oh boy, don’t let that luggage go as it’s a long way back down. Up, down, up, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Riomaggiore September 22nd 2019

Day 17 : Sunday 22 September 2019 : Riomaggiore and Manarola The rain has come. More like drizzle but we’re taking the train to Riomaggiore (€16 OW). Sensational and very hilly. Strangely quiet. Not many places open on the main street, (not sure if it’s because it’s Sunday or the rain) but morning tea is great, calamari! Riomaggiore is everything that you see in the photos. The photos of the Cinque Terre are mostly of Riomaggiore. Its easy to see. There’s some dark clouds hanging around. We walked around through to the little beach. On the way there were some big waves washing over the rocks, and the ferries stopped operating, must be expecting rough seas. Walked right around the bend to the little pebble beach (Riomaggiore beach). Hard to believe that we were swimming yesterday. ... read more
