You don't have to be out of your mind to drive in Naples but that would certainly put you in the minority! Up at just after 4.00am to get the 7.30am flight from Gatwick to arrive in Naples around midday to pick up the Fiat Idea, there is a joke somewhere there so I wil come back to it. It is a simple matter to get from the airport to Sorrento without going into Naples at all. The first step is to avoid any direction given by Gerry as it is invariably wrong. Worse getting off the motorway means getting amoungst the motor scooters. To understand why this is a bad thing you need to know that road rues in Italy do not apply to any two wheeled vehicle. As a motorist it is a fundamental ... read more

Day 16 Today it was a sad day as we had to pack up all of our stuff load the car, try to close the trunk and say good bye to Montepulciano. It had been home for 7 days and it was sad to leave the beautiful Tuscan countryside. By 930 we where on the road heading out to Sorrento (400 kms) The autostrada was quiet quick and we only made 1 pitstop for a snack and a pee stop. Arrived at our cute little b and b about 2pm. What a great little place Lissa had found only 6 rooms and ours faced out to the street. Now the fun, it took Lissa and I 1.5hours to find the car drop off as the gps had there old address and no new what we where ... read more

We arrived by train into Napoli and took a cab to the port. We bought our tickets to the hydrofoil that will take us to Sorrento, where we are staying at the Hotel Bel Air. It's still pretty chilly and I'm pretty sure I won't be laying by the pool in my bikini as planned! We check into our hotel, which has an AWESOME view of the city and the pool below. The only problem is that we are in a beach town in off-season. The floors in are room are all tile, not a rug in the place, unless you count the bath mat in the bathroom. The room seems cold and uninviting, I'm sure it would be much different if we were there when it was warm and toasty outside. We walked around the streets of ... read more

BLAH POTATOES Today when we went to Capri we found a chair lift but it was single chairs, not like the benches on chairlifts on mountains. At the top was the best view I have ever seen. On the way up mum dropped her water bottle on the ground. Phoebe and mum were scared that their shoes were going to fall off. I have a friend whose dad is going to the conference too. But she is leaving tomorrow in the morning. The ice creams here are delicimo. They have nutella flavors, kinder Bueno, kinder max, and loads of other flavours. I love the nutella and kinder max ice creams. We got on the wrong bus in Capri and ended up on the wrong side of the island. We had to take a bus all the ... read more

Ciao from the Amalfi Coast! So after a seriously long day of travel from San Gimignano in Tuscany, Michelle and I made it down south to Sorrento which is just south of Napoli on the Amalfi Coast. We only had a short stop in Napoli (which is a good thing because it is not a nice area) and rode a glorified subway all way out to Sorrento. Seriously...this thing had 31 stops and it took over an hour (think Kipling to Kennedy on the TTC). Now normally that wouldent be so bad, but we were squished into a corner clutching our massive backpacks, sweating, pressed against a grimy subway car wall and forced to listen to two annoying texan woman blabber on about EVERYTHING. Anyway, we got to Sorrento and it was lovely. At first glance ... read more

Hello all, still here in bella e caldo Italia! In Rome I visited the Vatican Museums with 4 Americans. There was a huge queue to get in, the longest I've ever seen (more than 1000m long). The queue was that long even before the opening of the museum, going all the way from the entrace till the Piazza San Pietro. Me and Zack, one of the Americans, found a smart way to skip a huge part of the queue and we got in very quickly! The museums are huge, enormous! The nicest was the Sistine Chapel. Tuesday afternoon I took the bus from Rome to Sorrento. The ride took almost 4 hours. This province of Italy is called Campania. Arriving around Napoli, you can see the Mount Vesuvius in the background. Driving through Naples and ... read more

I write you from a somewhat swanky bar upon a laptop in Sorrento. I had begun a wonderful entry about it all and going back to Ravenna, but I didn't hit save as soon as I should. So sad! I'm even getting used to the keyboards here. But I'll see what I can re-create before I head back down the Via Corsica Italia (I think it is...the main drag here means more traffic. According to my Frommer's guide, there are no traffic lights here!) to our hotel for dinner. First, I got to talking last night with Mary Donnan, an art teacher and fellow Italian Studies abroad participant. While she may not be in the same age bracket that us "students" are in from ASU or in my case, KSU, she is eager to take ... read more

Sadly, the last day of the tour. Today I passed on the optional excursion to Ischia and instead spent some time roaming around Sorrento. Nancy and I walked down to Marina Piccola and then down Via San Cesaro, my favorite shopping alley. It was there that she was kidnapped. By a mime. "Look, it's a mime!" He had been so still, I hadn't even noticed him. I got my camera out to take a picture of him and as I was fussing with putting my camera away, she went over and put a coin in his cup. He motioned for her to come back, tapped his heart in a 'thank you', and then handed her a flyer. When she went to take the flyer, he took her hand and froze again, not letting go. I laughed ... read more
