We've realized that our diary dates don't correspond to the actual date we are journaling. Sorry if that has been confusing. Also, creating these journals has been quite a learning experience. The European keyboard is not the same as the US, so several of the non-alpha keys are in different places. For example, the @ symbol shares a key with ò and ç We have to use a separate ALT GR key to use the #. The apostrophe shares the ? key and is on the top row. Parens are on 8 and 9. So there are lots of typos to fix before we can publish for your reading piacere. We added shower photos to the 16 Ottobre journal. OK, on to Sunday, 15 Ottobre. Sundays have been good to us. First there was San Marco ... read more

Welcome to the travel day from hell - 14 Ottobre. It started out wonderfully in Cernobbio as we caught the 8:53 AM to Milano. Arriving in Milano on time, we had 1/2 hour to transfer to the Eurostar for Napoli. Again, a piece of cake. During the 7 hour ride in 1st class, we enjoyed the conversation of other Americans before they disembarked in Firenze or Roma. Even lunch in the dining car was OK, although expensive (€26 each): a farfalle pasta, and tacchino e funghi (turkey with mushrooms.) It's amazing how skillful the servers were, plating each dish at the table from a platter. Not a drop was spilled on the tablecloth. Remember, the train is moving at speeds in excess of 40 mph. Aside: it's mushroom harvesting season, so the porcinis are plentiful and ... read more

Geo: 40.567, 14.5557Had a good chocolate-stuffed croissant at the hostel for breakfast. Good cappuccino, too. Good view on the terrace. I read awhile before catching the bus, where I ran into Claire again. I think she was still agitated about the dog eating her salami. She struggled with the exhaust fumes from the bus and was feeling nauseous. But coming from Naples, it didn't bother me in the least. Got to the hostel in Sorrento. They made a mistake and wanted to charge me for 2 nights instead of one. I never know what to make of these incidents. Probably deliberate, in this case. These guys are pretty money hungry at this hostel. You had to pay 3 or 4 euros per person to use the kitchen. What's up with that? It defeats the purpose of cooking ... read more

Ciao ciao, my darlings! You cannot know the intoxicating feeling of writing some stuff off the top of my head (infused, of course, with enthusiasm and bliss) and having you read it and share it with me. Everyone should have a blog! Back to Sant 'Angello... After checking in, Neal and Janelle and I decided to walk into Sorrento. We walked on back roads to avoid the major traffic, and saw beautiful views of the ocean (down down down high cliffs), charming neighbourhoods, people walking their dogs, hot sun on green trees, lemons, palms, flowering trees. We serendipitously happened upon the Lemon Garden - an oasis in the midst of town, behind walls, down a path... a lemon grove - hot, dry, but quiet, green, covered in fruit at every stage - green on the trees, ... read more

Ciao everyone... it's been so long!! A number of things have kept me from writing, but I am hopeful that my faithful audience will tune in now that I'm back... First a word from our sponsor: The Society for the Preservation of Italian Men. I can put it no better than Shane... "Even the Italian male mannequins have six packs." Long live Italian men!! And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming. After some time on my own I was anxious to meet up with my friends Janelle and Neal from Hazelton. They had invited me to join them for a few days in Sorrento, just outside of Naples, and I was so excited to have the opportunity to explore the area with them. I got to the airport early, fearful of train strikes or delays, ... read more

Another great night of sleep. This hotel may be out in the middle of nowhere but it's quiet, cool and spacious. I couldn't ask for more. except maybe a REAL breakfast. I didn't even bother walking across the dog turd minefield for Chinese breakfast. Instead I had my last Sam's Cola that I had brought from home and kept cold in my room's refrigerator and ate some trail mix. As usual we got an early start. We were on the road by 8:00 am. We would be spending the night along the beautiful, rugged Amalfi Coast near Sorrento. I say "near Sorrento" because we ARE on an EF trip. In order to put together a super cheap price they often put us up on the outskirts of the primo attractions (or in the case of Rome, ... read more

AFTER a really exhausting and hot night in Rome drove to the fascinating Pompeii! It was buried beneath ash and dust after the eruption on nearyby Mt Vesuvius. It was buried by volcanic ash for 100s of years before it was excavated and found undestroyed. However 2 hours of the burning sun and standing on thermal sand was enough for me. On the way to Sorrento I stopped for a lemon ice drink on the side of a road from a local whose stand was literally was hugging the edge of the cliff. SO light & refreshing! Headed straight for the pool at the camp site in Sorrento where I stayed the weekend. The town of Sorrento is lovely with beautiful views. Here I tasted some Limoncello, a lemon liqueur produced in this region. Turns out, ... read more

Hello to all. First I would like to thank Ray Ellen for the Bath & Body lotions, spay, soap, etc. The spray has come in more times than we can count. With all the sweating and foot oder stuck on the train, we all say "THANK YOU". Now to John Ruth, thank you so much for recommending Orvieto. The city was beautifuly perched up on the hill. In Orvieto we arrived later in the evening (as it seem with most of our stops). The hotel was only a few blocks from the train station straight up a hill. We were all thankful that it was level and no stairs. The white wine along with many of the reds was delicous. We purchased some wine and olive oil to ship home. This is one of the top ... read more

Hello to one and all! We are in Sorrento right now, it is beautiful. Cute little resort town with everyother person being a British tourist. This place is right on the coast, beautiful shores and views of Mt. Vesouvious (oh dear that is really spelled wrong... sorry). Sadly we are only here for 2 days, today we are just sort of wandering. Getting the lay of the land and checking out all the side streets, doing the tourist thing. Tomorrow we are going to Pompei (sp?) to check out the volcanic ruins and take a ride up to the top of the volcano to see the lava! Should be cool. Monday we are heading out, early (groan), to get to Bari asap to get a place on the ferry to go to Patras, Greece that night. ... read more
