After a week in the country, we're back in the big city. Dublin is awesome-- sort of reminiscent of London in a way. London with an edge, maybe. Frenetic, crowded, tons of restaurants and pubs, lots of young professional types hurrying around. We seem to be in the way. And underdressed. We're staying at the Westin, right near Trinity College and St. Stephen's Green. The location is excellent and we've been hoofing it all over the city seeing some of the sights and trying not to get trampled. Some of the fine things we've seen thus far: Dublin Castle: The seat of Dublin's government for eons. Reminded us of the White House. We got strangely excited when we saw them setting up for the World Bank meeting (to happen there Thursday). Christ Church Cathedral: It was ... read more

Hey everyone -- we're in Hollywood! Well, we WERE in Hollywood. Hollywood, Ireland. But it made us miss home... We were on the way to Glendalough (glen-da-lock), a beautiful spot in the Wicklow Mountains south of Dublin. Glendalough is the home of Saint Kevin. Who knew there was a saint with my name? (Well, Erin, for one, who booked us in a wonderful B&B here.) The big draw here is the amazing scenery, which was somewhat reminscent of my motherland of the Pacific Northwest. Vaguely like Montana (the nice part) or Wyoming (the non-Dick Cheney part). Lots of fir trees, rolling hills, and wonderful streams where you can see many feet into the crystal-clear water. We checked out the surrounding area, stopping at St. Kevin's monastery. Kevin was a wealthy guy, who gave up all his ... read more

(From Erin:) This is our last day in Killarney. We've had two bits of not-so-much-fun in the past couple of days. (1) I got sick and (2) My videocamera has stopped working properly. Fortunately we brought along medicine and I'm feeling much better, but the camera is still on the fritz. Oh well. Today is exactly one week that we've been in Ireland and we're still kicking ourselves that we're here and getting to see & experience all these amazing things. So, little did we know when we booked ourselves into this lovely little lakeside town that the first weekend in May, Killarney plays host to the Rally of the Lakes car race. So, every meathead in Ireland (and England) with a souped up Honda Accord has come here to Killarney to rev their engines, show ... read more

Hello everyone -- writing tonight about our day spent yesterday on Ireland's lovely Dingle Peninsula! We got an early start out of Killarney and headed northwest toward Dingle. Our first stop along the long and winding road was Inch Spit... a long sandbar in a town called Inch. It was actually totally, shockingly lovely -- it was quite warm, cloudless and beautiful. Almost like we were in Hawaii again. We've included some photos below... Erin was inspired, as you can see. Well, Kevin was inspired to make her do that... We got back on the road and eventually made it to Dingle town, the place of Rick Steves' dreams. It really is a fantastic place -- reminded us of a New England coastal town somehow. We arranged for a boat tour (more on that in a ... read more

Out of all the towns I've visited in Ireland, Sligo was the one I most wanted to see and its proven to definately be my favourite.. Why? I do not know, there isnt much to see or do here but Im finding myself loving it.. My first night here, I just ate dinner in the comfort of my hotel, after a 10 hour train trip day and having to go all the way back to Dublin, to change stations not only trains! I wasnt in the mood to be doing much, however this proved to be lucky as I got talking to a Polish bartender here in my hotel who offered to show me the sights on Sligo! Yay for me! Proved to be an interesting day, particularly after I had to get up early after ... read more

Hey Blog Reading Folks……(Ed/ZAPPA here) The ultimate(I felt)best way to go about this was to do it as we went along…Fresh thoughts…get a real feel for the place…unedited…warts and all…balls to the paper journalism….Stream of consciousness…how it was happening…while it was happening…you get the idea…..Just as I am ranting now…just throw it down big fella…The problem … 1)Would it be understood? 2)Would it make sense? 3)Would it be boring? The bigger problem it ends up was ………not laziness not drunkenness(that would have added to the charm)but we could not get “hooked up”.We wanted 24-7 access…not to be had in “good ol Ireland” our rooms were not equipped. The idea was as we were done for the day getting ready to “kick it”…jot a few things down…wind down for the day...see what we were arguing about….put it on ... read more

When you think of Ireland, you picture rolling green hills, stone walls, etc. Basically what you picture is Inis Mor. I arrived on the island (the largest of the three islands that make up the Aran Islands, and also the most popular) on Thursday with three of my friends at about 11:30am. The sun was shining, it was warm (hot even) and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. It was basically perfect. After unloading our stuff at our hostel we decided it would be best to rent bikes (seeing as the island is only 9 miles by 2 miles) as opposed to taking one of the very cute (yet rather pricy) horse drawn carriages, or one of the numerous ‘tour buses’ (which cost the same as a bike). After paying our ten euros, choosing our ... read more

Today (Thursday) we left Co. Clare and headed south to Killarney and Co. Kerry. We took a shortcut across the Shannon River via ferry, which was fun. It was just a short ride and we were able to see dolphins jumping in the water around the boat. From there, we drove into Co. Kerry and through the city of Tralee. We finally made it to our destination, Killarney. We'll be here for the next three nights. Killarney sometimes gets derided as a total tourist town, but I actually find it more pleasant than Doolin (which was just too rural for us). Killarney is set on the edge of Killarney National Park. It's some of the most beautiful lake and mountain scenery you can imagine. The weather continues to be unseasonably warm, sunny and gorgeous, so today ... read more

I arrived in Dublin yesterday afternoon from London. It's a very nice very european city...in that most of it's residents/tourists seem to be from other european countries besides Ireland. At least in the center. The Irish-ness seemed to increase outside of city center. But I had to walk quite a ways to find the local thrift store and a real butcher. My hostel has a nice kitchen, so I've been economically recreating things I read on Irish menus. I'm just back from the Evensong service at St. Patrick's cathedral. It was probably one of the highlights of the day. It featured the musical talent of the St. Patrick's choir, who were great, and it was free. I can't ask for much more. If you don't go to a service you have to pay something like ... read more

Limestone... ah, limestone...I'm going to keep this short, since we want some more pub food for dinner! (Fine dining is a casualty of the current exchange rate...) We spent a relaxing morning in Doolin, then drove off to spend the afternoon in The Burren, a wide expanse of limestone that, millions of years ago, used to be under the ocean (back in the days when Ireland was around the equator... ah, continental drift). Of course, now it's NOT under the ocean, so it's nothing but miles and miles of moonlike rock in every direction. Some vegetation grows on it, but not much. But you feel at times like you're on another planet. One of the more interesting things to see is Aailwee Cave, which goes deep underground for about a mile. Despite warnings from the tour ... read more
