July 16 Today is the day that we meet the people with whom we will be spending the next two weeks. We will travel by bus around Ireland and Scotland and will part ways once we end this tour in Edinburgh. Breakfast was at 8 am. It was a buffet breakfast complete with components of an English breakfast along with many extras such as pancakes, fried potatoes, mushrooms, and a variety of breads. Once finished, we had time to return to our rooms before boarding the bus for a trip around Dublin. I always laugh at the word Dublin…..it’s because of the many jokes Terry Wilson tells. I won’t share it here in print, but you can ask him and I’m sure he will tell you. Top of the list today……find a shirt that says Dublin ... read more

July 15 This is a travel day so much of the day has been spent getting from me place to another. We are going from London Heathrow Airport to Dublin. We flew Aer Lingus, which was a first for me. The day started our much like our flight at Pittsburgh, our flight was delayed about an hour. Eventually we went to the gate and boarded our flight. It was a totally uneventful flight. This flight didn’t include and snacks or drink unless you paid. I listened to music, Shealyn watched out the window and Marsha slept. Going through passport control was a breeze. Before we knew it we were at the cab queue outside the airport. We had to wait a bit because there were three of us with 2 suitcases each. Our cab driver was ... read more

We sadly departed Dublin without kids on the 12th with Bird and HP just moping along. Otherwise day was okay, warm with folks vehemently complaining of heat in the mid-seventies. A couple of days later when in Portmagee, jumping off point for Skellig Michael, a Yellow Flag warning was issued for temperature as on 16 July it was to rise to a blistering 73F. Honest Abe folksYellow Flag. Chatted with an Airbnb host one afternoon and she warns temp may reach the intolerable levels of the eighties with no rain. She didn't say but one would imagine, they blame the U.S. and China for the bulk of climate change. Countries in Europe by and large are doing the work to reduce carbon, but the big boys do little. At any rate visited a couple of demolished ... read more

The travelers rolled into Dublin after a horrendous day (okay, an exaggeration, but it wasn't good) at Heathrow. Dropped car at 13:15 (1:15 for US types), finally escaping security at 15:30. We boarded an hour late, and continuing our downward spiral, after arriving in line for take off, the captain elected to taxi around a bit to "cool off the brakes". Things took a decided upturn thereafter. A bit before arriving at our hotel we received a message from Baby Bird informing us seats awaited for dinner...beside them! Dinner good, but markedly superior was seeing BB and Walt three days before our 50th anniversary. Can life get any better? Well, yes it can as Doozer and Erin arrived the next day. The six of us spent four of the most wonderful days in Bird's or my ... read more

Hello there everyone! I’ve never written a blog before so there may be a few technical issues, mainly me trying to figure out how to Blog but sure I’ll give it a go. A lot of you have said to me that you’d love to see how I’m getting on over yonder, when I finally get there, and I don’t want to go back on Instagram so a colleague suggested I write a blog, and here we are. I’m just going to write it a bit like a journal I think and post a couple of pics every now and again so hopefully it works out! I will do my best to post regularly and let you all know the craic. Thanks for caring enough to read this incoherent post, Kirsten... read more

Our last full day, and the last blog for this adventure. We needed to drop Sherri off at the airport before 17:00, and planned our day accordingly. Susan wanted a final waterfall fix, so we left Kilkenny and drove northeast to the Devils Glen forest and waterfall. The drive took us through a beautiful mountain pass, with long ranging views up the valley. It was only marred by the roadworks which delayed us by about 15 minutes, but hey ho! For the first time in this adventure the sat nav took us the wrong way, and we ended up driving along a rough track to a locked gate, which on further inspection was the entrance to a rehab facility. Well, we have imbibed a drink or two over the last 3 weeks and wondered whether the ... read more

We were greeted by grey, overcast skies and chilly temperatures. We left the Lodge, said goodbye to the doggies, packed Sherri, and set off to our penultimate stop in Kilkenny, about an hour away. Once we had found parking we attempted to find our lodgings, eventually asking in a café at approximately the correct address. Luckily the café owner was also our host, so we had somewhere to stay for the next 2 nights. The accommodation on this occasion isn’t Airbnb and was booked by me rather than Susan; I’m afraid to say the quality isn’t really up to the same standard as our last few accommodations, being small and a bit tatty. It is clean though, and we’ll only be using it as somewhere to sleep, so it’s not a major problem. We went for ... read more

Our penultimate full day, and the sun was shining ? We found a café for breakfast, then headed to the castle. The self-guided tour was interesting and well structured. It took around an hour, and there was plenty of information on the history of the castle and the Earls of Ormonde, the 25th Earl who died in 1997 being the last. Upon his death, the Marquessate of Ormonde became extinct and the Earldoms of Ormonde and Ossory and the Viscountcy of Thurles became dormant. The castle is now owned by the people of Ireland since the last Marquess of Ormond sold it to the State for a token sum of £50. Afterwards we had an ice cream, and explored the 50 acres of parkland adjacent to the castle. It’s beautiful, with lots of wild flowers and ... read more

Susan’s birthday! Of course, that means she gets to choose what we do today. We headed to Birr about 15 minutes north, and visited Birr Castle Demesne. This is a castle, still lived in by the Parson family who have lived there for over 400 years. The current incumbent is the Seventh Earl of Rosse (Brendan Parsons), Lady Rosse (Alison Cook-Hurle) and their family. The castle is situated in around 120 acres of beautiful gardens and parkland. We wandered along stone-lined paths, following the start of the Solar Trail, where information boards spaced to the scale of the solar system give interesting facts on the sun and planets; each step was the equivalent of 1.6million km in space. Once we got to Mars we turned onto the trail taking us towards the castle, finding our way ... read more

Another day of sunshine! We had planned to drive around the Ring of Kerry today, before heading to our next stop about 2 hours drive away. I’m delighted to say though, that following a recommendation from Man with Donkey yesterday as well as one or two other people in Dingle, we changed our plan and did the Slea Head Drive instead. Slea Head is a promontory in the westernmost part of the Dingle Peninsula. National Geographic magazine once said it was the most beautiful place in the world; I’m not qualified to agree or disagree on that because I haven’t been everywhere else, but it is absolutely stunning! We had a yummy breakfast in Dingle Town, then headed off. As we left the town we spotted a Buddhist Monk who had been on the road near ... read more
