Ireland Thursday June 2 Breakfast at 7.30 for an early start again as rain is forecast all day, but with a slight benefit of a tail wind for most of the day. Today we are heading for the Riverside Hotel in Sligo. Luckily the forecast changed a little with rain just in the afternoon so we had a morning with a tail wind and the occasional glimpse of sun. The coast road was undulating and quite pleasant looking out to sea with little islands just offshore in the Moy estuary. There were murals of sheep at a smallholding at the roadside. I stopped to take a photo and an old lady (actually younger than me) came out and offered us a cup of tea. Lovely people. We later had a very good coffee and piece of ... read more

Ireland Wednesday 1 June Nice and sunny for most of the day with a mild north westerly wind which followed is for the first 20km in green cow country. The scenery was good with mostly better farm land, apart from the section alongside Lough Conn which was a bit wild and rocky. A nice cycleway took us alongside the river from Castlebar to Turlough and then past Turlough Tower built about 1000 yrs ago with a now abandoned church built alongside at a later date. The route north was undulating with no massive hills to make the day’s climbing of 760 metres. After a light lunch in Crossmolina we headed to our destination of Ballina along some pleasant minor roads taking us past the remains of Deel Castle and what looked like an abandoned church with ... read more

Ireland Tuesday 31 May. Better weather today with no rain and a milder wind, but nevertheless unnecessary in my view. It should rain and blow wind at night, unless it is behind us. The Station House hotel made a good breakfast for us to get us off to a good start with an overcast sky until mid morning and then we saw a little sun intermittently. The scenery was still good with many hills around us and little climbs to test our legs. After 28 km of chasing Lyta and Oscar we stopped at a supermarket in Letterfrack for a snack to help us on our way. Here we met a Welsh guy who was riding the whole coast anticlockwise with full camping gear but sleeping in outhouses and barns when he could. Not the average ... read more

Ireland Monday If I was a dour fellow I would say that the scenery today was quite good. If I was the flamboyant sort I would say that it was absolutely wonderful, even looking through my rose coloured spectacles. However, the wind was in our face for the whole day which made riding very difficult, even though we only climbed 530 metres it felt like 1000. I was really glad to finish the ride, which was made worse by the rain for the last two hours. Mostly we followed the coast which took us on a very twisty route in the boulder strewn countryside occupied by donkeys, horses and the occasional sheep. Away from the coast we encountered many lakes and ponds which the Irish call loughs and quite a few Bonny thatched cottages and hotels. ... read more

Yesterday we started our tour of the upper half of the Irish coastline on a 1100km journey. Miraculously the sun was shining after a week of mixed weather (that is another way of saying we had quite a bit of rain). Panic at the car park where the Flowbird app would not work. Eventually paid by machine and panic over. Went to nearby cafe for lunch where the food was good but a bit chaotic. Frank ordered soup- sorry no soup of the day today. Cottage pie then- yes ok. 10 mins later- sorry no cottage pie left, ok fish and chips then - 10 mins later fish and chips only problem was it was getting near to the time to be at the ferry terminal, so threw the fish down and a few chips before ... read more

I am a couple of days behind in the posting. Our days are pretty full and my normal blog time which is during wine-thirty, has been greatly reduced. Then, when we get back from dinner, we are exhausted. I am going to try to get caught up today. We are currently starting our second day in Belfast. First, a bit on the Irish weather. It reminds me a lot of Portland, yes because it rains a lot, but more because it can change in a heartbeat. Rain one minute sunny the next. It has been hard to judge if umbrellas are needed or not. Fortunately for us, every day the phone says it is going to rain it typically does it overnight, so we have had very good weather for the most of our trip so ... read more

We are back in Dublin as I write this entry, but I remember it very clearly. The day started with and early breakfast, pretty much the first ones there so everything was freshly put out. I even dared the sunny side up eggs, they were actually pretty ok. I drank three cups of coffee and got one to go as I needed to be alert for the first part of the trip. We picked up our rental car from Europcar just down the street from our hotel. The credit card was supposed to cover the insurance, but Ireland is one of the few countries, not covered, along with Italy (which I understand because they drive crazy), Israel (I have an idea why) and Jamaica. Long story short, we paid for all of the insurance. Renting the ... read more

Started the day on time, but it was still hard to get up. Breakfast is included in our room rate. Normally that means a simple continental and maybe some scrambled eggs and sausage. Here it meant a waffle bar, omelet bar, a hot bar with everything to make your own Full Irish (same thing as a full English) and many other items. Just kept it simple and had some eggs, sausage and toast. Jerry added yogurt. I have been a little preoccupied because Tarragon is not responding well to the cat sitter, hasn’t let her pet him yet, which is a bit unusual. He is not very comfortable around other people but typically after the second day he does at least one some petting. I am trying not to stress about it, but it is pretty ... read more

Exhaustion prevailed this morning, and we decided to skip the National Gallery and sleep. Even with a couple more hours it still wasn’t enough. As I write this entry it is Sunday morning, and while we are up and in the process of getting ready, we are both still very tired. So much so, that it is prompting us to re visit the entire itinerary to see how we can make the trip a bit more relaxing, we tend to try and do way too much, and we are not as young as we use to be. Back to our Saturday. The forecast was for rain, but the turned out to be pretty nice and no rain, a little overcast but no rain. With the last start most of the day turned into a walking tour ... read more

We both slept very hard but were not fully rested, but that is the price you pay for world travel. Day started at 5:30, showers in the all-in-on Bathroom, a bit of re packing then breakfast. The breakfast choices were; a full English, a full English or a full English. It was a hard choice but we went with the full English. Otherwise known as a breakfast heart attack. Two sausage links, two slices of rasher bacon, on over easy egg, deep fried hashbrown, blood pudding (I have no idea what is really in it), beans, and toast. It was good, how could it not be, but did have a bit of an adverse gastro intestine affect (not Mexico City so don’t worry). After breakfast we were off to the ferry, a quick 5-minute walk from ... read more
