Mountmellick is a town of about 4000 people, a couple of hours by bus south west of Dublin. As nice and friendly as the place is, no-one has yet requested it be added to the list of travelblog locations and it clearly isn't on the list of popular tourist places in Ireland. I suspect though, in common with many, if not most, of the small towns of Ireland, Mountmellick has a history that is interesting and still celebrated by the locals. I am convinced that a few days spent talking, walking and having the occasional ale in such a small town is something that should be part of any visit by anybody to this country. We had a special reason for visiting Mountmellick. Almost 200 years ago my great, great grandmother was born here. At the ... read more

The days are filled with good conversation and trips to local sights. Mick took us to the Locke Distillery. This is the oldest distillery in the world dating from 1509 and parts of the old factory are still operating. The waterwheel that powered the grinding wheels is still turning and the gears that turn the drive shaft are still doing their job. The display was very well done, providing enough information to understand the process and history but not so much that you get bored or feel overwhelmed. The "new" distillery is much the same except the power is electric and the stills are new, shiny copper. A woman was there to check the temperature of the still. Upstairs the were four huge mash vats. These are two stories tall and contain the milled grains and ... read more

Dave's Top 5 * Morrisey's Bar in Abbeyleix - get a pint and your corn flakes at the same time * First pint of Guinness, second pint of Guinness, third pint of Guinness... * Meal at Chris and Elaine's wedding (best beef fillet ever!) * Elaine's dad's speech with a liberal spattering of fecks * Mini wooden sauna in hotel room in Dublin (bizarre!) So flights all booked so its definetly happening now!!! SCARY!! Spent a while looking for flights and ended up getting the best deal on www.edreams.com ! The cheapest flights were €540 with Air Asia from London heathrow ( flights to london €25 with Ryan air to stansted or €50 with Aer lingus to heathrow) but i have read only OK reports about them so we ended up paying €650 each to go with Singapore airlines leaving directly from Dublin! They seem much friendlier and comfortable from what iv read on the net but only time will tell i guess. Travel time ----27 and a half hours!! Sounds horrible. 2 stopovers, 1 in london for 3 hours and Singapore for 2 hours! I can see us being fit to kill each other when we arrive and wanting ... read more

So after a bit of organising and getting all our info together ( Companies to use / use bus tours or rent a camper etc ) we have moved our leaving date closer from Feb 2010 to October 2009. We are aiming to look at the second or third week of october to head off. After some research it turns out that renting a camper van and driving through Eastern Oz works out a few thousand euro cheaper than using oz experience so looks like we will be using a camper instead. The best value that i can find on the net is wicked campers www.wickedcampers.com/au They design your van the way you want. Should be fun :) Iv also found that you can save about 200-300 euro leaving from london for australia rather than dublin ... read more

Hey all, So iv been trying to find a blog or book or something to help with both what to do and expect traveling to oz for a year and also the prep work thats involved. After spending what seems like 20 years trying to get the info i wanted i have decided to create my own blog as both a record of what was decided on and to maybe help people with their plans. Ok so from the beginning............... After meeting my girlfriend Melissa ( most beautiful woman in the world ;) ) about a year ago i was in the process of buying my first house. Once finalised and all the hassle of a mortgage we were talking about things we wished we had done and would like to do. I mentioned that i ... read more
