Our Irish friends and the tour guides all seem to agree that Adare is one of the prettiest, most picturesque villages in Ireland, so we made a point of stopping here for dinner and a little sight-seeing as we drove from Glenstal to our next destination - the Brandon Hotel in Tralee. Adare is a lovely town, though I thought the same of many Irish towns. Perhaps it’s the number of thatched roofs in Adare that makes it stand out. I read somewhere that while other towns were busy “upgrading” to slate roofs back in the early 1800s, the local landlord in Adare (the Earl of Dunraven, I believe) preferred to stick to the traditional thatch, which is apparently a lot more work to maintain properly. Here in Adare, I bought a Kodak disposable camera, so ... read more

After a pleasant trip from Cork, we found Kilarney International Youth Hostel without too much trouble (only one wrong turn!). We checked in about 9:30am, stored our luggage and bought 2 Ring of Kerry Tour tickets @16.50 Euros each. The sights were awesome! We stopped once to watch a presentation by an Irish shepherd, explaining the different types of sheep and demonstrating how his sheepdogs work. They were something and the whole thing was very informative and only 4 Euros. We stopped for lunch at the Scariff Inn. The food was good, but very expensive (13 Euros for a small bowl of soup, a small salad, and water). After lunch we stopped several times for picture-taking and rest/shopping. Got back to hostel about 5:30pm. Bus is called by the hostel, so very easy to do, picking ... read more

I flew into County Kerry, Ireland from Frankfurt on Sunday afternoon, and of course it was raining when we touched down. By the time I got to my hostel in Kilarney it was pouring and the day was pretty much a waste as almost everything was closed so I went and saw the Di Vinci Code. When I got back to my hostel I met 2 of my roommates who just happened to be from North Carolina. It seems we had an American themed room, because our other roommates were from Colorado and Wisconsin. We lucked out on Monday as the sun stayed out for most of the day. I took a tour of the Ring of Kerry, a scenic drive that went through the Kilarney National Park, along the coast and through the mountains. I ... read more

Hey everybody. So jeez, it's definitely about time I get this posted. So as many of you know my old man came to visit for a little over a week and half and boy did we have ourselves a good time! I tell you, Dad and I make quite the pair indeed. So, I'll get right to it. Dad arrived in Dublin after 35 hours of being in air and in airports (he really does show the love doesn't he?) and after a few hugs and good ole smiles we headed into Dublin for a pint of genuine silky Guinness, which Dad had a hurtin' for. After the splendid pint (and the first one Dad and I have EVER shared) we came on back to the homestead. After showing Dad a bit of Maynooth and the ... read more

Hello everyone! Ireland is as beautiful as we expected - we've seen rolling hills (and some mountains even), rugged coastline, lots of stone fences and even more sheep and cattle. The weather is also about what we thought - cold and rainy. Yesterday we were driving around the Ring of Kerry and saw a full double rainbow!! Of course, the pubs are numerous, probably couldn't walk a hundred steps without running into one. Last night we had a blast drinking Guinness and listening to some Irish music. Right as we left, the owner came by and chatted with us for a while, explaining the tradition of Munster rugby - he even brought out a rugby "ball" and taught us some rules. We haven't run into many Ryans yet, but we're headed up to Tipperary tomorrow, which ... read more

Brittany flew in from London to Shannon on Saturday. I had a brief idea of what I might want to do while I had the opportunity to drive around Ireland. I wanted to go to Dingle Peninsula and possibly around Kerry. I was expecting decent weather for the journey considering it has not been to bad here, but unfortunately the Irish weather made up for the unusual mildness with 48 hours plus of pouring, soaking rain. The clouds were low and dark and acted like fog concealing the mountains and coastline we would have otherwise had a crisp, clear view of. At first I was a little disappointed in the constant rain, but sometimes the colors seemed to pop more on a white background and the occasional fog picture in the mountain passages are really mysterious ... read more

A boys weekend in Ireland for Paddy's day - just what the doctor ordered, and what better time to visit Irleand. So Me, Russ and Paul Dawson flew into Cork on Paddys afternoon - It started well with a nice bit of sideways action from the pilot in a bit of wind as we landed/drifted down the runway - Awesome, and that was a sign of things to come (you'll see). Then it was straight into town to drink with some Irish dudes..... I love the Irish, definately one of the friendliest nation of people I have met, in fact I think they would take the cake if I could actually understand what they were saying - thats one crazy accent. I must admit, Paddys evening was a little dissapointing because there were just so many ... read more

Waking up about 4-5 hours after putting my head down I was up. This time I wasn't going to miss the complimentry breakfast off Toast and Marmalade! By 9.30am I had packed my bags, checked out and had made myself down to Cork Bus Station as I would be taking a bus to a place called Killarney. Famous for its rugged landscape and mountainous landscapes. 3 hours of sitting on the bus and we arrived in Killarney. Town itself is small but bustling. It has much more appeal off itself than Cork. Killarney has all the old appeal to it yet it generates a lot of atmosphere with its people. After checking into my hostel it appeared the room was full off people. Nearly all the beds where taken thus I got myself a top bunk ... read more

FRIDAY 10 / 3 / - Blarney Due to my exhaustion off waking up early and getting to sleep late with a bit off CIDER in the belly the previous day it was a horrible 10.30am wake up for me... missing the complimentry breakfast and being the only person left in the bedroom sleeping! Oh my I've missed out on a whole 1.5hours off sight seeing. After a quick shower and slick off the hair I packed my bag and set off into the town centre again. I went to a sandwhich bar and ended up having an egg something. It was Irish. Whilst I was there I met another Australian who was living/working in Cork. She said her friends band where playing at a club later on and that she would call me later. Score... ... read more
