Wednesday afternoon I embarked on my trip to Ireland. The Irish students I go to school with told me it was cold there but GOOD GOD I didn't know to what extent they meant. Jamie and I arrived in Dublin and spent the night there. We explored the next morning while it snowed on us, going to Trinity College, St. Patrick's Cathedral, etc. We had to catch a bus at one though so we could take the 4 hour journey across Ireland to Galway. Our friend, Dory, is currently studying there. The landscape of Ireland is just absolutely beautiful. It's covered in stone fences and lush green grass. Looking out the window, you would never guess that it was FREEZING. We arrived in Galway, a fairly small college town and explored with Dory. It's right ... read more

Between the end of my British semester in Portsmouth and the IMPREST conference back in Maastricht, I was able to throw together a EU financed stopover in Dublin. Since the conference funding covered airfare for the participants, out of options for going between southern England and southeastern Holland, the routing through Dublin made the most sense. How lucky for me! In fitting fashion, the taxi ride from Bournemouth to the airport (after spending the same amount as the airplane ticket taking the train there from Portsmouth) cost 2/3 as much as the flight to Dublin. The reason that I ended up doing this routing was because my Russian buddy Alex (former roommate from Lithuania) now lives here. He had to work and couldn’t meet me at the airport (as if this was a significant problem for ... read more

Howth is a nice small fishing port at the Irish Sea (that's the sea called between Britain and Ireland), for about 45 minutes journey by DART, Dublin's suburban rail line. Ireland's Eye is an island which lies close to Howth harbour, it's the breeding place of many seabirds. The Vikings called the island Erin's Ey which later became Ireland's Eye - Erin was used as an English name for Ireland. According to Irish myths the Milesians, the invaders of Ireland gave the land this name after the goddess Ériu, one of the patron goddesses of Ireland. (It is the distant island on the right of the 5. image). ... read more

St. Patrick's Day Weekend 16th-19th March, 2006 Let me tell you a little about "Ryanair" and our flight or not flight to Dublin! Bern and I booked flights to Dublin leaving at 8.30pm on Thurday night (the evening before St. Patrick's Day). When we checked in at Luton Airport our flight was already delayed by 3 hours and was not scheduled to depart until 11.30pm. For the next 5 hours we managed to entertain ourselves with some card playing. I was beginning to wonder if this was a frequent occurrance as many other groups of people at the airport also playing cards! The boarding call didn't come over until about 11.30pm and there was lots of clapping and cheering in the airport from the only people left in the airport waiting to fly to Dublin. Some ... read more

Smart Cars and Guinnesses Someone callously swiped the left side mirror of my temperamental Vauxhall Corsa. My money is on Gary from across the street. Gary is irritated if you park your car outside his house. Heaven forbid he has to lumbar his beer belly three meters across the road to his car. We all pay our road taxes so everyone on the street, if possible, parks their cars in front of his house. Don’t get me wrong, the majority of the people on my street are lovely and don’t even mind me blocking their drive if I have to. Gary just seems to have an annoying sense of self importance and ill-placed logic. Eventually I called One Car One about Henry (yes, I named my car) and arranged for a replacement to be delivered to ... read more

This morning I woke at a nifty time off 9am. Skipped the shower (they where in a terrible state) and headed out into Dublin. I confirmed my bus at the station and headed out into the city off Dublin. I guess I'm just not used to huge citys but I don't like them. You have to scale 4 blocks just to see 1 thing. I mainly saw a ton off shops, only a few monuments before heading back to the bus. The city seemed cold and everyone kept to there own... much different to the small towns I visited in the country... then again I was only here for a few hours! The bus departed at midday, expected to get to Cork at about 5.30. Theres not really much to say about the bus trip. I ... read more

Hey there! So yes indeed, Dublin has done it again! My friend Erin and I did a "touristy" weekend (about time right?) and had a great time venturing around the city. Dublin really does have a lot to offer boy. So, on Saturday morning we caught the bus into Dublin and then immediately hopped onto the tour bus. Dublin is really cool because it has a few different tour buses that are "hop on hop off" which is a really great idea, beause whenever you feel like getting off at an attraction...you can! And the buses come by that same stop every ten minutes, so it really worked out. Anyway, so we first rode the bus for the full route to see what we were really interested in and then got off St. Patrick's Cathedral. This ... read more
