Well hi all, We've made it to Dublin and been here for nearly a week now. Very different to London - old, cold and a bit feral in places actually. Quite unimpressed with the number of females without teeth and arguments from some of the locals. Anyway, the absolute majority of people are really friendly and helpful here. Stayed with Lindy Foat for the first few nights and crashed on her couch. One word to describe her place: freezing!!! Poor thing the landlord is a tight ass and only has the heater on low. It was great to have lindy to show us about for the first couple of nights so we could get our bearings. Now we are staying with belinda cope and john, sharing the love around. We pretty much walked around Dublin in ... read more

The fact that we are alive after the flight over to Dublin is amazing. This was the worst flight I have ever been on. Not only were we flying with a cheap airline but the winds and rain when leaving Leeds to Dublin were such that our plane felt like it was on a bloody trampoline the whole way! To make matters worse, the plane was filled with rowdy, drunk boys laughing and yelling "we are going to die" and girls shrieking loudly at every slight bit of turbulence. So to say I was relieved at arriving safely is an understatement. Unfortunately our troubles didn't stop there and upon arriving at our so called 'hostel' which was unnamed and seemed to be some person's house with beds crammed into every room, we were told that they ... read more

Finally I get round to doing this last blog. Way out of date, but better late than never... As some of you didn't know, you'll see now there is an end to this story, or at least another beginning - yep, I'm in Dublin! but I'll leave that till later on; first, I've got the task of remembering back the last couple of months. I flew to Auckland from Melbourne, and for the first time since being on the other side of the world, suddenly really felt very far away. I'm not sure why, maybe the knowledge of New Zealand being that much more remote, two small islands in the middle of the pacific, maybe also the cooler weather, and the harsh blustery winds. I couldn't decide what to do in New Zealand, so was in ... read more

Another winter day has come And gone away In even Paris and Rome And I wanna go home Let me go home And I’m surrounded by A million people I Still feel all alone Oh, let me go home Oh, I miss you, you know Ok, so maybe that's a bit dramatic, but home is just around the corner! Already! Our 3 days in Galway were relaxing and odd. Kristen, Andrea and I stayed in each night, instead of going out, because it was raining constantly and we spent about 10 hours each day on a bus. Sitting in front of a cute little fake-fireplace-heater was awesome, mainly because of the red glitter on the fake logs... :) I used about 7 swiss miss hot chocolate packages in 3 days, ate gummy bears, and watched HORRIBLE ... read more

Hello everyone! I am in Dublin and have been since last night! The weather is the usual, cold, rainy, and now even WINDY..50mph windy! But.. I have managed to take the hop on and off bus tour of dublin and seen St. Patrick's Cathedral, Guiness Storehouse (brewery), and Temple Bar (famous market, shops, etc). It has been quite a day already and it is not even 4pm here! I just finished lunch at a cafe called bad ass cafe and was veery tastey! I do not have regular access to the internet, so i can not post pictures yet, but next destination is Amsterdam/netherlands in general and I will there I think! I had my first pint of irish guiness in Ireland last night after my arrival and I am feeling quite at home in the ... read more

The past week and a half I have had the chance to do a lot of traveling in and around Dublin. I first headed off with a group to Glendalough. It use to be a monastic community that was founded in the 6th century by St. Kevin and lasted until the end of the 14th century when it was partly destroyed by English troops. We went on a tour of the ruins, many of which are still perfectly standing despite the fact they were constructed one millennium ago. Then we went on a hike through the valley that is surrounded by beautiful mountains and two large lakes. Last weekend I took a double-decker bus up to Kilmainham Gaol, a famous jail in Ireland that was first created at the end of the 18th century. The jail ... read more

Hallo from Dublin!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!! It's a big city that's made of cement because there are few other resources. So it's not very pleasing to look at. I have lots of pictures of the cute little streets with shops, though. And a few of the big street we're on which is right on the Liffey. Very cool! Tomorrow we leave on a 6pm bus for Glendalough - I hear there's nothing there, but it's very pretty! Updates updates updates.... We drove from Edinburgh to Glasgow a few nights ago to catch a flight to Dublin - it was the shortest flight any of us had been on. We went up and came down. :) Luckily I'm not one to get motion sickness, and I don't get sick generally, so my trip has been fantastic! One of us ... read more

So I am a bit behind on my posts. January 11-13 we took a weekend trip to Dublin to taste test the Guinness and settle the debate once and for all: Does the Guinness really taste better in Ireland? We set out to explore this urban legend the minute we landed…and the answer is…it tastes the same. Myth Busted! Although, Evan will say that the pint from the brewery was fresher, for obvious reasons, but if the bartender pours it correctly, and the taps are clean, it tastes the same. The most surprising fact about the taste of the Guinness was that I somehow found myself really enjoying it…and craving it now that we've been back. I guess it was the magical experience of Dublin that won me over. Although we also went to Jameson, and ... read more

Hello everyone! I have now been in Dublin for a full week and I am beginning to get my bearings with the city. It is a great city that has both a quaint and a bustling feeling. This past week I went through the confusing process of registering at Trinity College Dublin. It is a beautiful school but things work a little different that back home at GW, mostly because they have used the same process for several centuries. I've included some pictures from around campus. I also had a chance to visit Dublin Castle which was first built in the 12th century but was mostly rebuilt during the 18th century. It is now the place for many political ceremonies in the republic of Ireland. As with many places here, the old architecture was absolutely beautiful. ... read more

A weird year finished off weirdly as well, but this time in a very good way. About two months ago my friend Brian, a New Yorker originally from Dublin asked me what my plans were for New Year’s. I told him I had none yet and he invited me to join him and a few friends in Dublin. I’d never been, and the prospect of going with someone who knew the city made it even more appealing. Brian, ever the gentleman, took it upon himself to book me a hotel room close to the action that didn’t cost an obscene amount of money. I flew in the morning of the 30th. I didn’t sleep on the flight over and Brian was sleeping in from being out until 4AM the previous night. I walked around the area ... read more
