I got a new stamp in my passport today! I was looking at my friend Brad's passport and he's got tonnnnnes of stamps and visas from all over the world in his. I'm so jealous. I'm just going to Europe this year, so I'll get at most 3 stamps. Oh well, it's better than none. Anyways, I'm in Ireland! I already like it a lot. Brad and I hopped off the bus (after 15 hours) and wandered into the Garda (Police Station). We said we were trying to find the tourist information centre and they didn't feel like giving us directions so they just DROVE us there. Isn't that nice? I'm really excited about being here! We're headed west tomorrow and I can't wait! My 12 hours in London yesterday were nice. I got to catch ... read more

Glengarriff Riding into this small gateway town to the Beara Peninsula I felt like I was in a Northwest logging town. Maybe it was the wide torn up street. Maybe it was the larger then life storefronts. Perhaps it was the American style roadhouse I stayed in, complete with a herd of Harleys in the parking lot. It was definitely the country music played to a drum machine in the pub. Turns out that one man bands playing poor renditions of American favorites with the assistance of a synthesiser or drum machine are quite popular here. Just goes to show that even the Irish can make bad music. There was another tourist in the pub that I could not look at, she was trying so hard not to laugh that it would set me off every ... read more

"If I have learned anything from cycling it is to always spit to the side." - Bryan Flint, April 2006 There is an allegory to the statement "Be careful for what you wish for because you just might get it." It is "Be careful what you disparage, for it might just be the thing you need." On Sunday night I stayed at a Hostel connected to the Dzogchen Beara Tibetan Buddhist retreat center on the Beara Peninsula on the Southwest coast of Ireland. On Tuesday I returned and am staying to participate in a Buddhist retreat over Easter Weekend. There are number of reasons for this. First, after eleven days of travel and nine of cycling my body told me to stop. Second, Hostels on the outer West coast of Ireland are a whole other animal ... read more

At the end of the last week I had several experiences that demonstrate the reason I came to stay in one place for an extended period of time. The weather improved and I found myself out on the streets of Cappoquin with my camera more often. Counter to my fears, people did not go running for their doorways. Many folks were happy to have their picture taken and a few people who I had passed on the street came up to me. One guy reveled that he had a collection of over 200 pictures from old Cappoquin. He had grown up in the hard life that was the orphanage that now is my guest house residence. On Friday morning I rode out to the Lismore Castle to photograph the large magnolia tree that had reached its ... read more

Hello to whomever may get this... I just wanted to send a quick update and let you know where I am at. We just arrived in Cork, Ireland to learn how the Irish celebrate St. Patty's Day. I am sure it should be quite interesting. It was an interesting trip here, we realized last night ~6pm that we hadn't looked into getting to the airport this morning at 5:15am and then found out that the tube station doesn't run that early. Well it was an evening of moving back and forth and realizing that we were too late to find the easist way there...so we bit the bullet and paid for a cab (85 GPB yikes!), versus the other optinon which was leaving for the airport last night and sleeping there... Anyway we made it here ... read more

Beep...Beep...BEEP 4am and my phone alarm is buzzing away like its cool to be waking up at 4am on a Thursday morning. Not only is it early, but its freezing. When I open the curtains the windows are covered in frost and its still pitch black outside. A burst of excitement rushes through me as I know I'm up this early for a reason... I'm off to IRELAND! I stand like a withering feotus in the shower waiting for the water to warm up but when it does I get showered and prepped for a backpacking trip around Ireland. Speeding through the countryside at 4.30am in my Uncles Alfa Rameo we arrived at the airport with about 10 minutes to spare on the check in gate. Before long I'm on the RYANAIR jet to Cork, Ireland. ... read more

This past weekend I went to Youghal (pronounced Yawl) and Cobh (pronounced Cove) in East Co. Cork. I stayed Friday night at Evergreen House in Youghal. It was really lovely. A family lived in one part of it and rented rooms in the other part. There was a four-year old girl named Ella, a ballerina, and a two-year old named Oscar, who wore a little monkey hat. They had a really nice garden and the house was right against the ocean. It was cold and windy Saturday morning, but wandering around the beach of Youghal was just beautiful. The mother from Evergreen House was going to drive me to Midleton, but then I just decided since it was a nice day to go to Fota Island and Cobh afterwards by train. I spent a good deal ... read more

This weekend Jay and I went to Cork, Ireland to visit our friend Ryan from Swarthmore. We got in late Friday night and met up with Ryan. We dropped our stuff off at his place and went out for the night. We got back to his flat pretty late and watched some episodes from season three of the OC on Ryan's computer. Sleepless, Jay and I caught the 6AM bus to Dublin. It was a four hour ride through some beautiful countryside. Once we got there we headed to the Guinness factory. We took the self guided tour, got our complimentary pint, and spent some money in the shop. It was a great experience and we were definitely happy with our decision to take the four hour bus ride. We passed on the Irish lunch and ... read more
