Well, my last full day in the land of the midnight sun where the black rocks stand guard against the cold sea... The Blue Lagoon was one of the most luxurious experiences of my life! It was very cheap actually compared to most of Iceland. It was very relaxing, despite the airy-fairy, hippy nutcases floating around (One guy was sat cross legged in the shallows in a sort of Buddhist meditation!). They were like mines full of bullshit, waiting to grind up against the thin hull of my patience and detonate! I did the full works, silica mud mask (twice!), and sat in there for a couple of hours until I was wrinkled like a prune! Anyway, I"m going shopping today. Reykjavik is slowly waking up after Easter Sunday (although shops aren"t opening til midday!) The ... read more

Phew! Thanks to my mother for making me realise my error! I was looking on Icelandair´s website rather than Iceland Express for prices! No wonder they were so high! I'm flying back at 7.15am to Stansted on Tuesday 10th. Today is Easter Sunday so Reykjavík has stopped! It's eerie, ALL of Reykjavík are in Church, there's the sound of organs everywhere you go but it's fantastic for photos as the streets are deserted! I'm Blue Lagooning this afternoon, all being well. The weather is still miserable but it's more a sea mist than rain now. I'll see everyone soon! Look forward to it, I think you'll find me a new, world-wise person! I am, of course, joking but Iceland has taught me a few things and made me appreciate how easy life in England is and ... read more

2c, light showers Forget whatever you think Iceland would be like. It’s more full on, more understated, more touristed and more isolated than you’d ever imagined. I had a fascination with Iceland ever since I had to do a project on it in primary school. The people don’t look like Bjork and the landscape is more Greenland than Iceland. The temperature is not as cold as would be expected, and certainly a lot warmer than anything I’d experienced in Canada. I had no idea what to expect when I arrived at an empty Keflavik International airport at 1am. The first sign that should have warned me Iceland is frighteningly expensive was the hoards of tourist lining up for duty free - even when the prices were relatively expensive by US or Australian standards. There is ... read more

Well everyone, it would appear that my time in Iceland is nearly at an end. I went to tourist information today, desperately searching for anything else to do. Their summary of my situation was pretty much that, at this time of year, without a car, there's very little else I can do! Not often a tourist information centre will be that blunt with you but, of course, this is Iceland. I've just got back from quad-biking across a lava field and through a geothermal power station, that was dangerously fun! If there's a quad bike going back in England, I'd happily buy it. They can do anything! High point was skidding round a mountain pass, covered in snow, coming down into the power station! A lot of fun, despite the torrential rain which is currently with ... read more

First off, don't worry, I can get home but the flight looks to be costing around 500-600 quid!!! This is Icelandair on a Tuesday, hardly peak time! Lobster trap, it cost me 102 pounds to fly in to Iceland! You can get in but then you can't get back! I'm gutted but I suppose I don't really have a choice! I literally cannot believe it! I can fly back Wednesday with BA for 211 but this means I need to find a hotel for Tuesday night... So much hassle, it's ridiculous ... read more

I've been back since yesterday but this is my first chance to get on the internet. Well, what a greeting back to civilisation after Grundarfjörður! I'd been in Reykjavík maybe 45 minutes when, browsing the music section of the Icelandic equivalent of Borders, I looked to find Jonsí, the lead singer of Sigur Rós doing exactly the same thing! I shook his hand, and then we had quite a conversation, why was I in Iceland? Did I like Reykjavík? He was very pleasant. For all those interested, the recording of the new album is going OK! Then he was off into the cold wind of the Reykjavík street with a little wave and a smile as he buttoned down the earflaps on his tweed cap! I was stunned obviously but managed to keep my composure until ... read more

I'm currently working on the idea of giving up the lap of Iceland idea. There are several reasons for this. Iceland, I have discovered is very Reykja-centric. As long as you are in the city, you have a large range of activites to choose from and things to do. Coming into the wilds (and in all seriousness outside Reykjavík with the exception of Akureyri on the north coast Iceland is ALL the wilds) has brought it home to me just how remote it is. I have spent the day so far walking. The scenery is beautiful but there is nothing to do! Apart from bird-watching, which doesn't particularly interest me, it's... boring. I'm not being defeated by this but it doesn't appeal to me, spending a month or so walking and taking photos whilst spending huge ... read more

Right, I'm booked into a hotel in Reykjavík for three nights from tomorrow night. For parents, it's the Hotel Leif Eiriksson just opposite Hallgrímskirkja Church. Google it, it's Expedia recommended. Also booked on a glacier snowmobile tour on Friday and a quad biking expedition through the 'Valley of the Black Sands' on Saturday. I know these will have some people with their hearts in their mouths but both are operated by Destination Iceland, the tour company that Rough Guide recommends for everything and are both perfectly safe for beginners. On Sunday, I'll go to the Blue Lagoon. So that's another three days planned and the set change to my itinerary! I'll obviously keep everyone updated. I feel a lot happier now that I've got some more exciting and definite plans. I just feel like I should ... read more
