... read more

Akureyri, Iceland--Tuesday, June 10th We were up really early this morning as we were told there was a possibility of seeing whales as we navigated the fjords into port. Unfortunately, we saw heavy, thick fog, which made it pretty impossible to see anything. When it cleared, we could view the lovely snow topped mountain sides of the fjord and admire the occasional farmstead where there was any flat land to build anything on. I don’t know how long this fjord is but it took quite a long time to get into port. As soon as we were cleared to get off, we left the ship expecting to board a bus to take us to our boat to start our Whale Watching tour. Instead we found that we were expected to walk 5-6 blocks to the tour ... read more

The annual Airwaves music festival in Reykjavik is a big event on the international music scene. Music lovers from around the world descend on the capital of Iceland to indulge in four days of non stop live music, enjoying the electric atmosphere as the city turns into a huge party town for the duration of the event. The organisers chose to delay the festival until the end of October for the first time this year, in order to extend the all too brief tourist season in Iceland before the Arctic winter begins to flex it's considerable muscle. So here I am, a music lover from way back, enjoying a random chance to join in the party amidst hordes or hard core music fans, and an exceptional lineup of local and international artists performing up to five ... read more

Wednesday 31st July, 2013. Akureyri, North Iceland We disembarked at the port of Akureyri and headed straight to the car hire place to collect our pre-booked car. We had planned to head over to Husavik (abot 60 km away) which is world famous for its Whale Watching. On the way we stopped at the Goðafoss "waterfall of the gods" or "waterfall of the goði". The Goðafoss waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. The water of the river Skjálfandafljót falls from a height of 12 meters over a width of 30 meters. The name derives from the story that in the year 999 or 1000 the Lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. After his conversion Þorgeir threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall. We parked in ... read more

After a long and tiring trip from Torshavn, first by ferry from Tórshavn to Seyðisfjörður and then with busses from Seyðisfjörður to Akureyri, we were exhausted. We had managed to sleep only a few hours in the couchettes we had in the ferry, although we booked this trip already in April these were the only places left on the ferry. Our first evening in Akureyri we therefore only did some research on what to see, made dinner and went to sleep early. The next morning we were still really tired, and as there was rainy weather promised for all of the day we decided to explore Akureyri. Our hostel, a nice experience called Akureyri Backpacker, is in the middle of Akureyri so we just walked around from there and looked at the city. The city is ... read more

Geo: 65.6839, -18.1105Is what they call Akureyri. Its not hard to see why. We woke tired in the morning, and headed up to deck 11 for breakfast at the Windjammer. At first glance outside all hunger and fatigue was instantly replaced with excitement. We headed straight on deck to soak in the beautiful scenery. Whitecap mountains all around a beautiful still bay. Sunshine illuminating a pretty town. It was an inspired sight. We then went for breakfast, disembarking around 11. No tour was booked today. Our plan rather, was to explore the relatively small town on foot, and seek out Puffin penguins. We had been advised they were common here. Whilst this turned out to be a lie, exploring the city was fun. Our first stop was the 1940s hilltop church looking over the town. It ... read more

We went to a different city. Then we went to a fish festival. There was a little place to color. It was fun. I ate sushi and it was good. We went on a boat and we saw lots of whales. The whales were close to the boat. We saw lots and lots of birds. Also we went fishing and I caught a big fish. We ate it for dinner. It was fun - Sofia Journal Entry Aug 11-12. After breakfast at the gas station (we loved their ham and cheese stuffed pastry), we left Stykkisholmur for Akuyeri. This was one of the longer car rides, but it was beautiful. Not only did we see beautiful mountains and fjords, but lots of animals. We did not pass many cars, but saw lots of sheep in the ... read more

Always good to come to Akureyri. We drove from Stykkisholmur this morning. A bit of a wind on the way - well, some say there is no wind, just that the calmness is in a bit of a hurry. No arguing about that. Short stops on the way, first to see over the Berserk Lavafield. What a story behind that place. Then over to the waterfall called 'the speedy' (just think of Speedy Gonsalez'). We wanted to be early in Akureyri so my tourists could enjoy this lovely, clean town with all its interesting sites. Did that and the town showed its beauty with sparkling sun and to my great surprise I met two good friends in the main street as I got out of the hotel. We leave Akureyri tomorrow for more sights.... read more

Geo: 65.6839, -18.1105Last night during our passage from Lerwick to Akureyri, the ship crossed the Arctic Circle. This is the first time that we have been that far north so I stayed up watching the ship's position on the TV screen. We passed the latitude of 66° 33′ 44″ north by just a bit. It was still light outside last night even though it is a month passed the summer solstice. We took a full day excursion today including stops at Godafoss (the Waterfall of the Gods) on the Skjálfandafljót River, the pseudo craters around Skutustada giger, the trails through the lava at Dimmuborgir, and the geothermal area of Namafjall Hverir. All the landscapes are quite interesting to see and not like anything I have seen before. On this trip, we walked on the edge of ... read more
