Today brought a slow start. Judith was up until 12am watching the sunset - see the first photo. Others stayed up until 10:30ish. We discovered yesterday that Sam loves black currant Ribena - thus the photo of him trying to keep it from Mike. Once we got moving we traveled to Akureyri. There we visited the botanical gardens - beautiful. The alpine plants exhibit had items from all over the world. Each continent was well represented. Sam and Emma spent some time entertaining a young girl (1 1/2 years old) by doing cartwheels and flips in a grassy area. In talking with the girl's mother she mentioned that quite often cruise ships come to Akureyri and they close down many of the streets and town roads are like traffic jams - so glad we aren't in ... read more

Today we went with our bodies as to the flow of the day for eating and all else. Amazingly it was quite warm and comfortable this morning. I was fine walking around in jeans and a thin long sleeve shirt. Our journey took us north of Dalvik into the fjords and tunnels. Just before the first tunnel we were able to see Grimsey Island north off the coast. Grimsey is located on the Arctic Circle. In the first tunnel there was only one lane for traffic for over 4 km. Basically the traffic coming at us had the right of way. Our side had pull outs every 1/4-1/3 of a km. The pullouts were large enough to hold three cars. That tunnel opened into the small town or OLadsfjordur. Just past the town we entered the ... read more

Today we packed up early and left for Dalvik by 8am. Along the way we passed more beautiful waterfalls and a set of turf houses - the two remaining were used for sheep. The other turf houses were removed when the Ring Road was built. Our journey took us through the desolate highlands region northwest of Egilsstadir. This landscape was barren and reminded us of pictures we've seen of the moon landing. Of course that took Mike into conspiracy theories of whether they really went to the moon or whether they just took pictures here. So as we continued we noticed cairns along the road - these were built centuries ago by the bishops to designate regions. Eventually someone had to go the bathroom so we pulled off at Grimsstadir. As we drove the 4km through ... read more

I woke up this morning and the drapes were open to the most beautiful view of Iceland. We arranged a private tour with Sagatravel, we found them on the internet. Private tours are cheaper than the ones offered by the cruise. Another advantage of Sagatravel is they have smaller vans that seat 14 instead of tours on a large bus. In Akureyri the only bathroom stops are gas stations which have one stall. When you are on a bus with 30 people a bathroom stop can take 40 minutes. Also the small bus can go down dirt roads that the large busses cannot go down. There are no restaurants on the tours in Akureyri, the food stop is a gas station. We brought an orange and a banana from breakfast plus we always carry oat bars ... read more

I'm greeted by another sunny day in Iceland, my last day in the north of the country. I sort out my stuff, check out of the hostel and set off to do a bit of geocaching and exploring in the older parts of Akureyri. I remember to take a photo of one of the traffic lights. They are so cute - the red lights are in the shape of hearts! For my first geocache hunt I'm taken near to the Hof building (where I'd caught the bus to Husavik from) and see another cool sculpture by the waters' edge; this time a silvery fish tail is pointing skywards. The sculpture is by a guy called Petur Bjarnasson and is called Farið or 'the flight'. I don't ... read more

I wake to a new day in Iceland and find that the promised sunshine prompting my booking of an Icelandic horse trek was nowhere to be seen. Instead there are soft, fat, fluffy snow flakes dusting the pavements and decorating the pine trees outside my hostel. I have a lovely lazy morning catching up on blogging, reading, snoozing and after a quick trip to the Bonus supermarket - yes, finally a shop is open! - some treats to trough on. My lift to the stables arrives and I find it is the owner, a lovely lady in the coolest jumper/cardigan/coat I've ever seen. It is twisted over making a kind of snood, cowl cloak effect - brilliant design effort and something she just chucks on to get from house to car (I asked her!). When we ... read more

Another sunny day. What can I say! I'm lucky with the weather on this trip. Today I am off on a long tour to have a look around the Myvatn area with SBA Norðurleið. Akureyri Tour I have a long walk to the meeting point from my new hostel which is on the other side of town. It's pretty early and there's virtually no-one about. I hope I'm not the only one on the trip. I picked this company because it specifically didn't penalise solo travellers by cancelling if no-one else booked; most other companies need at least two before they'll go ahead with a tour. I meet my tour guided Oskar and we have a bit of a chat. It turns out we are to be joined by a family who are flying in from ... read more

I arrive at Reykjavik's domestic airport after a bit of a detour via a hotel restaurant - map reading blooper but I realise I'm actually really early and can afford to have some grub before I find the actual terminal building - only to find the flight is delayed by half an hour. I settle down to read my book and add a bit to my blog before finally my flight is ready to depart. We're in a fairly small aircraft, just two seats each side of the aisle and you have to walk up the steps into the plane from the tarmac. We are quickly airborne and as I'm in a window seat I can see all that's outside - which is mostly the tops of fluffy clouds! So much for seeing a bit of ... read more

Day 5 We left the camp site at about 8.45am....well attempted to leave! It had rained most of the night and the motor home had sunk into the soft grass-covered soil. We couldn't move backwards or forwards. By this time, it had stopped raining. A very kind German couple came to our rescue when they saw me pushing the vehicle while Tom was trying to edge it out of the rut. We managed to move it backwards but not forwards....until we got the help from the German couple. It was lovely of them. The poor guy slipped and fell head first onto the very soggy grass, while he was pushing the car. He was drenched all down one side of him. Non-the-less, with the 3 of us pushing, we eventually hit solid ground. Apologised to our ... read more
