The next day our first stop was yet another waterfall, on its own this is a spectacular waterfall but there just so many beautiful waterfalls in Iceland..... Later we had a walk round Lake Myvatn and visited an open air mineral bath. The temperature of the pool was a lovely 38 degrees and the sun was out too. The blistering temperatures of around 14 degrees was enough to give me a bit of a tan, by tan I obviously mean I got a bit burnt:-) The water came straight from the earth itself and was mineral rich, it reminded me of the dead sea as you had a pleasant slimy feeling all over me, either that or they hadn’t changed the water for a while:-). I preferred this pool at Námaskarð Pass to the very touristy ... read more

Day 6 – Today we slept in a little bit and then chatted again with the Swiss family at breakfast. We packed up the car and headed out on our way to Akureyri, the biggest town outside of Reykjavik. As we were leaving, we saw another couple load their car with a bag specifically from a store near our home in Basel. Very weird. At the gas station we bought two of our favorite cookies, that we had discovered there the night before. Yum. We started the trip with a stop at Dettifoss waterfall, and I think this was our first waterfall without rain. We drove an hour or so to Akureyri, checked in to the hotel and walked around town. Not a great day, but not too bad. No rain, anyway. We ended up walking ... read more

June 21st, Myvatn is our goal today. First the earthbaths with a lovely swim. Everyone felt so relaxed afterwards that many fell asleep on the bus on the way over to Dettifoss, the powermost waterfall in Europe. It is so! amazing. Then back to explore Dimmuborgir (Dark cities or rocks). No one got lost this time like last time with the Halton Outdoor Club. The pseudocraters did not get the proper walk as usually when we do this part of the country, you simply cannot do everything! And today is Friday. Whalewatching for some of my nice people from Canada, others want to have a look around the town of Akureyri. The wearher is good, 24 centigrades as we get to the abode of the Gods. This is where Odinn, the father of the other Gods, ... read more

From Swaziland to Iceland in eight days...yes it did happen. Little transfer in South Africa, few days in Bangkok, party week-end in Saigon with Mari, little transfer in Oslo and I made my way to Reykjavik. I'm still alive! For the next three days I'm going to enjoy the first few days of the Icelandic winter, or should I say the last few days of the Icelandic summer. Temperatures...well, between -1 and up to 9 degrees celsius. I'm not going to say it was cold! The good news, is that days were still pretty long with sunrise at 7am and sunset at 7pm, not bad! My first stop was Reykjavik international airport to rent a car for 48 hours. The airport is a seriously busy affair...beside our SAS plane, I spotted one more single aircraft behind ... read more

After two days in Reykjavik last June, I headed up north on my quest to get around the island, clockwise, in my final remaining five days on Iceland. Since I had such a short time, I had to scoot -- and quickly! Taking the bus was the best option for me, though far from a cheap one. Hitching was out, as on some of the roads, one passing car an hour is not unheard of, and I just couldn't risk spending my time on the island on the side of the road! Although the distance between the capital city and Akureyri in the north is only about 380 KM and takes about 6.5 hours by bus, I decided to stay the night half way, in a nondescript town of about, oh, say, 12 people. Or so ... read more

Thu was our first port in Iceland. Akureyri is in the northern part of Iceland at the end of a 36 mile long fjord. I think they said it’s the 2nd largest city in Iceland at about 18,000 people. There are a lot of farms in the area and a lot of sheep. Apparently there are more sheep in Iceland than People. We had an early tour so headed up to the Lido for Breakfast and to get some pictures of the sail down the fjord. It took a while for the ship to be cleared by local authorities so we were a bit late leaving for our Akureyri Falls and Farmland. We started with a drive along the fjord to an old farm (very old) that was built mostly with sod and some stone. There ... read more

Today was a big change from the landscapes of the past few days. We drove westward towards the northern town of Akuryri. This was a place where I could actually consider living. It lay near the bottom of the long fjord of Eyjafjordur. The mountains gave the impression of being in Switzerland and everything was a lot greener. This town is the capital of the north and an important centre for services, culture and commerce. Around 17,000 people live here and there was a warm atmosphere to the place, unlike the greyness of the capital. (Maybe I just don't like cities) Our first stop was to view some of the old buildings.... I really have to re adjust my mind to what is actually 'old' in Iceland. We stop at the top of the beautiful botanical ... read more

Started the day bright and early with a visit to Akureyrí. Stopped for gorgeous photos over the town and lake (see panorama) before continuing onto the town itself. Akureyrí is the fourth biggest city of Iceland and the only metropolis outside Greater Reykjavík. The ”Capital of the North”, as it is often called, is the administration and service centre of Northern Iceland. Although only around 15.000 people live here, it offers an infrastructure that probably cannot be found in a City in Central Europe of similar size. It's truly unbelievable that a town that size can even be termed a city let alone be a major district capital!!! First we visited the town's botanical garden, founded by a Danish woman in 1912. It sounds crazy after seeing nothing but green all week but it was so ... read more
