Our Family Trip

We love to travel! Our family consists of Mom (Judith), Dad (Mike), three children currently ranging from 6-14, and Grandma (Mary) who quite often travels with us. We enjoy exploring off the beaten paths and getting lost which really means stumbling across something cool and new. We also believe in playing and enjoying the nature around us - not every minute must be filled.

After packing a bit we decided to go Geocaching. We found a lovely hike within three minutes of the house - Stadarborg. It is a partially built stone structure with a fascinating history. On the hike you followed the cairns from one spot to the next. The moss along the rocks was so squishy and soft. At that geocache we left our geocoin and picked up one from the Czech Republic to leave in a VA geocache. After that we finished packing and went off to look at the Blue Lagoon and top off the gas tank. Today is very cloudy, foggy, and misty/rain. But again we can't complain as we had ten days of sunny warmer weather. At the airport our flight was delayed. The airport had fussball tables and other things set around. So ... read more

This morning brought snoozing until late (9am). Once we got going we drove to the Bridge Between Continents. At this point you are witnessing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge pulling apart. Thus you can walk across the bridge and you move from The Eurasian Continental Plate to the North American Continental Plate. The average separation is 2cm a year or 6 meters in 100 years. This process means the Atlantic Ocean is growing and Iceland is on the growth path. This rift of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge extends from the point in Reykjanes Peninsula to Thingvellir to Lake Myvatn. We also spent some time 'holding' up the bridge. #reykjanes Then we continued along searching for the planets (the geothermal plant in the area has a sun and then the planets are stretched in correct distance and size from that ... read more

Today started slow as we kept trying to see the midnight sun and the moon last night. At 12:45am you could barely see the sunset as the fog had moved in on all sides except the Northwest. We tried again at 2am for sunrise. At that point Judith didn't even get Emma up as the moon and sun were no longer visible through the fog everywhere. Thus we left in fog... That just got denser as we drove the Ring Road towards Reyjavik. However as soon as we were through the moors the fog lifted and was gone. As we continued along we approached a farmstead called Hraunsnef that had maps (postcards) of local features that were mapped with descriptions and drawings showing the living areas for elves, dwarves, hidden people, and others. In the shop ... read more

Today started a little later as our journey wasn't as long. Prior to leaving we had a good chat with Swany and Peter (our Airbnb hosts). Plus Mom fell in love with the region and had to leave Dad in their garden. The interesting geographically speaking part of our day started when I programmed the next destination into the car's GPS navigation system. The journey that Swany said would take about 2-2 1/2 hours came up lasting from 10:30-5:30!!!! Needless to say the GPS felt it would be better to go north around the entire Trollaskagi peninsula and then a few more. Thus as we drove south towards the Ring Road (1) the GPS female voice with a more British accent kept telling us to turn around in every farm road we passed - some were ... read more

Today brought a slow start. Judith was up until 12am watching the sunset - see the first photo. Others stayed up until 10:30ish. We discovered yesterday that Sam loves black currant Ribena - thus the photo of him trying to keep it from Mike. Once we got moving we traveled to Akureyri. There we visited the botanical gardens - beautiful. The alpine plants exhibit had items from all over the world. Each continent was well represented. Sam and Emma spent some time entertaining a young girl (1 1/2 years old) by doing cartwheels and flips in a grassy area. In talking with the girl's mother she mentioned that quite often cruise ships come to Akureyri and they close down many of the streets and town roads are like traffic jams - so glad we aren't in ... read more

Today we went with our bodies as to the flow of the day for eating and all else. Amazingly it was quite warm and comfortable this morning. I was fine walking around in jeans and a thin long sleeve shirt. Our journey took us north of Dalvik into the fjords and tunnels. Just before the first tunnel we were able to see Grimsey Island north off the coast. Grimsey is located on the Arctic Circle. In the first tunnel there was only one lane for traffic for over 4 km. Basically the traffic coming at us had the right of way. Our side had pull outs every 1/4-1/3 of a km. The pullouts were large enough to hold three cars. That tunnel opened into the small town or OLadsfjordur. Just past the town we entered the ... read more

Today we packed up early and left for Dalvik by 8am. Along the way we passed more beautiful waterfalls and a set of turf houses - the two remaining were used for sheep. The other turf houses were removed when the Ring Road was built. Our journey took us through the desolate highlands region northwest of Egilsstadir. This landscape was barren and reminded us of pictures we've seen of the moon landing. Of course that took Mike into conspiracy theories of whether they really went to the moon or whether they just took pictures here. So as we continued we noticed cairns along the road - these were built centuries ago by the bishops to designate regions. Eventually someone had to go the bathroom so we pulled off at Grimsstadir. As we drove the 4km through ... read more

This morning brought a hardy meal of bacon, blood sausage (Mike) and waffles. The boys attempted again to play with their soccer ball outside. Alas the small corgi like dog came running up to try to steal it again. Soccer game postponed. After exploring the local Netto for groceries prior to National Day closings. National Day is like American Independence Day in that it is celebrated around the occasion of Iceland achieving independent rule from Denmark. However the events differ. In Reykjavik there are larger and longer events with parades and food, etc. However local towns do things on a smaller scale. We are currently in Egilsstadir. In this town they have a church service, a small parade, bouncy houses, a stage with singers and dancers, and a couple of sporting events like &@!&. Most of the ... read more

Today started with making waffles by reading the box in Icelandic. After giving up when trying to look up the Icelandic word for egg, Judith just started pouring milk into the batter until it looked right. We purchased waffle mix yesterday when we saw the house we were renting had a waffle maker. Syrup was another story as we couldn't figure out syrup on the grocery shelf so mom picked out strawberry syrupy jam in a milk type container. It was a hit. Too bad we can't bring it back with us. Time to make syrupy jam at home!! We are staying on a horse farm just outside Egilsstadir on 94. Thus we only had to take one left turn to make our way to Borgarjprdur. 70 km, long dirt road, a few paved areas, a ... read more

I sit here facing the back window at the end of a LONG day watching the horses graze and the river flow by. The wind has a kick to it as it whips around the farm and through our small window openings. Birds chirp and life is good. Today brought an early start as we had a long journey to get from the south to the east. Plus, we had LOTS to see along with way. After packing the car we started down the side road to 204. Along the way we stopped to look at the baby terns on the side of the road. And once again got the adult terns upset. They pecked the hood again but not us. In town we laughed over our confusion and inexperience at obtaining gas for the car. ... read more
