July 12 Wednesday Early departure so up at 5 am. I had to wash my hair this morning because it was all whacked out. This hotels version of the hairdryer reminds me of just a tube blowing air at the end. Most of the hotels have regular hairdryer. However, you have to hold the button constantly to keep it going. Typical breakfast: runny eggs, lots of cheeses and deli meat, fruits, and assorted breads. We left the hotel at 7:15 am and headed for the Bulgarian-Greece border. This time I get the whole back row to myself (or so I thought). We rotate every two seats in a clockwise fashion. This is the 2nd time around. I had to skip the back row of 5 seats during the first rotation. So now I can go from ... read more

Monday 22ndMay Cycling Tour of Meteora We travelled up to Kastraki yesterday through stunning mountains and across wide plains. In the mountains, the overriding colour is the yellow of the blooming broom trees, their flowers scenting the air. Kastraki is a small village in the Meteora area and sits at the base of huge pillars of rock. It is truly like scenery from some fantasy film. The huge rock monoliths appear initially to be smooth rock faces but as you get closer you see that they have indents and grooves that have been shaped over thousands of years. We ate in the campsite restaurant (very delicious) as the shops don’t open on a Sunday. Today we headed to the big town of Kalambaka to the supermarket to stock up. After lunch we went for a cycle ... read more

As I left Corfu, I did something I've rarely done on this trip, which was not booking anywhere to stay at my next destination. This was because I had no idea whether I'd even make it to my next destination that day; Meteora. Basically I had no idea what the bus connections were and therefore how far I could get; but the hostels in the towns around Meteora seemed to have plenty of room so if I managed to get there, then I knew I'd probably be alright. With the ferry dropping me off in Igoumenitsa, I knew that I'd be able to then get to Ioannina but with only two daily buses onwards from Ioannina to Meteora, I wasn't sure if I'd make the last connecting bus and end up being stuck in Ioannina. In ... read more

Up to get the 9am coach (Meteora Thrones, highly recommended) - & they were on time! A glorious Merc mini bus, leather seats, cherry trim, a driver called Carlos & our guide, Dimitri who spoke good English, Italian & Romanian having lived in both countries before & doubtless smatterings of other languages too. (He also had 2 degrees – botany & International Banking) We shared this 20 seater with just 2 Italians, also from the site. The trip was just fantastic – just the right length in 4 ½ hours. We visited 2 monasteries & 1 nunnery all of which are right on the top of the sandstone mountains, 400 metres high. Apparently it is the second most visited area in Greece after the Parthenon. Dimitri was very knowledgeable & knew the place inside out having ... read more

Got some washing on, discovered that the lady had put wifi on, got the bikes down & cycled into town for lunch. We had a drink in the first place we went to but they only served toast. The next place Cathy didn't like as she felt ogled at so we left & found a traditional Greek taverna which did us a smashing lunch with local wine too. The town was very quiet & hardly any tourists about at all & tourism is this town's livelihood. We'd left the bikes against a railing – the saddles were like hot plates & we could hardly touch them! Cycling back felt like a hot stone bum massage. Got back & hit the pool which wasn't a great relief as it was really warm. Busy too – again like ... read more

My sincerest apologies for not publishing a blog for a very long time…It’s not that I didn’t do anything but more of I did too much! I hope everyone is excited to read about monks and monasteries, since that is the first trip I’m going to talk about! Meteora, Greece is a place that has interesting tall rock formations that resulted from wind and water erosion. Left behind are steep but smooth cliffs, peaks, and caves on which monks from the 4th century onward were able to live a life of religious asceticism. These monks were not kidding when they wanted to be left alone either; the cliffs of Meteora are so steep that only the most experienced rock climbers attempt to scale the sides of the mountainous region. The first monks to arrive were forced ... read more

Radiohead famously said, "Meeting people is easy" (well, famously to Radiohead fans). Call it a reference to their days of intense fame, in which they would shake hands with countless interviewers every day and yet feel an increasing apathy, even disdain for these people as the days went on. In my travels I have met lots of people. LOTS of people. Some I would get to know rather well, some I would spend no more than a day in their company, some I would shake hands with, leave the room, and then never see again. The lives that criss-cross while you backpack, the chance meetings, the unexpected relationships, they come down to nothing more than a click on the computer, a decision to stay at this hostel over that one, the choice to take this train ... read more
