Breakfast on the aft deck this morning as the sun was finally shining. We didn’t get into Argostoli until midday so we had a nice relaxing morning. Once we arrived in port, we had lunch before leaving the boat because Argostoli isn’t very big and there doesn’t seem to be much to do except souvenir shopping. We packed our bathers as there is a small beach at the north end of the town and headed ashore. The beach is tiny and made of shells and broken pottery, worn down like sea glass. Em went on a treasure hunt along the beach and found lots of tiny pieces of broken tableware, with the glaze still attached showing the patterns from years ago. Who knows, maybe there were even some ancient bits in there! We waded in the ... read more

Villas are definitely the way forward. During this mega-intensive year without travel, self-afflicted after choosing to do this super-difficult master’s, I think a few luxuries can be forgiven. This trip was quite a departure from the typical trips described in these blogs of mine. No budget accommodation was involved, no guidebook, no cheap dodgy street-food, no arriving at an airport unsure of what to do next, and no travelling by myself. Fifty years of marriage is quite an achievement and definitely worth celebrating. My mum and dad have managed to drag out this celebration over most of the year and I can’t fault them for that. I sometimes get a month out of my birthday and a golden wedding anniversary is a lot more special and probably something I’ll never celebrate unless I get hitched sharpish. ... read more

Thursday 2nd May, 2013. Argostoli, Kefalonia, Greece Agostoli is one of the busiest ports in Greece and sits of the west coast of the island of Kefalonia (Cephalonia spelled the Italian way!). The island was severely damaged by German bombing in 1943 during the Second World War, but even more so after a large earthquake in 1953. Most of the buildings on the island collapsed prompting an island-wide rebuild. We breakfasted and disembarked the ship. M went to the tourist office to try (but failed) to post the Venice blogs while D went to hire a car. D returned with the car and we teamed up with a Canadian couple called Louise and Maurice to cut the costs. The four of us set off and headed for the nearest petrol station. It is normal in Greece ... read more

The clouds open to a scene of stunning island. Though a bit of an over- used cliche by now, the 'island paradise' look really doesn't get any less spectacular. It's at the same time routine yet amazing that our earth can hold so much beauty within it, I think. The plane turns and lands on a small strip of island. We depart to a heat that can only be foreign, a heat we long for on those cold English nights, and walk to a tiny airport to see the reaction of the Greek officials to the latest bunch of sun- seeking Englishmen to come onto their island. I confess, the reason for my mother and me taking the trip was to see for ourselves the place where 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' was filmed, whether it really was ... read more

This title should have been posted two months later but things change... Two days ago I received my salary. The accountant came to the bar around 8pm with a smile on his face telling me that all the problems had been sorted out and I can see him in the office. I was relieved that finally they realized that the so-called days off are to be paid as well. Well, as a problem he meant deducting my non-existent flight ticket from the 230 EUR salary when I told him I came here by coach. So he meant to say that he solved this problem: he investigated that I indeed came by coach. By that time, I decided to come home - I was just avoiding the moment, or sorry: I was looking for the right moment ... read more

It all started with me not having a salary for a week now. I've talked with the accountant here, we agreed to talk and meet on Sunday - he never showed up. In the meanwhile, the Slovakians had June as a whole month, worked through. NO ONE received a decent salary. They have the same contract as I do: 400 EUR/month, 48 hours a week, 6 day work per week. Meaning that we work 6 days and 8 hours and that one day is our rightful day off. All nine of the Slovaks have the very same contract, only that their flight tickets of 270 EUR will get deducted as the hotel said to cover the costs of transport. They should get 130 EUR for June. Some of them received 99 EUR, some got 185 EUR, ... read more

Kefalonia was nothing like its island neighbour of Zante (or Chavos as I liked to call it.) The latter was where the youth of Britain woke up at midday, then after enjoying a Full English with HP Sauce, they would clamber aboard the banana boats. Next, after attaining their much-sought after All-Over-Red-Body-Tan, they would spend the evening drinking copious amounts of Mythos before being either arrested or finding a cocktail bar to vomit in. Thankfully though, Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, was a bit more cultured than all that. To be honest, Angela and I never thought we’d do a package holiday again. Everything about them made us shudder, starting with the plane load of British holidaymakers, all eager and excited, armed with sun cream and sun hats. Then to the hell on earth ... read more

This is going to be a short post, it's just to update you guys with the latest information. The pictures are from the hotel and the coffee is the famous Greek one. Let's start with the fact that the doing the dishes really dries your hands. Everyone knows that but no one should experience it. It's not nice. I'm getting faster in washing the dishes and as the Slovak boy got a day off today, I did everything: even the big and the ceramic containers. They are really heavy and slippery. I finished with everything around 1pm and headed back to my room when the general manager stopped me to talk. From tomorrow, I will not wash the plates in the kitchen, I'll help out in the restaurant with the two girls: I'm gonna be a ... read more

Allow me to share with endless joy and four hours of experience to all of you, that since yesterday which was 3rd July - I work in the BAR! Where should I begin... I've already mentioned the girl with swollen knee - she went home on the 2nd July and the bar has been empty since. The other two waitresses were told to check on the bar from time to time if there's anyone wanting to have a drink but most of their attention focused on the restaurant - understandably. As a result, the guests and the waitresses never crossed each other's way... My she-boss had this delusional dream of me quickly doing some rooms in the morning, then go to the bar in the evening all smiling and happy. Two birds with one stone right? ... read more

We've come to another day off of mine, and today I decided to discover Skala. But first, let me tell you some things that happened recently. One of the girls is going home to Slovakia as her knee was swollen from something. Probably it was too much standing and running around on the job. Anyways, the general manager sent her home as she is unable to work. My lady-boss, the manager of the chambermaids suggested me to ask the manager to move me to the bar to replace the girl leaving. I am the only one from our cleaning team who speaks English - like, in sentences. However the she-boss would keep me for one or two rooms to clean besides the rooms. I don't think the role of maid-barista exists. I could definitely wave goodbye ... read more
