Day 48: Returning home We got up again at 9am and checked out at 10am. We walked around our neighborhood trying to find the bus stop (which had changed streets because of some construction) and was now in a greasy Chinatown-feeling area, where no one was really friendly, there were women and children beggars, men drinking their Mythos beers at 10:30am, and street vendors sporting their merchandise all over their arms (clothes, purses etc…). We walked past a few food places, and then found the 51 bus stop to take us back to the Athens train station. After that we stopped at a café because Lisa needed her fix, then we made our way back to one of the greasy-spoons for an early gyro lunch. It was only 1.70 and PACKED with meat! I could have ... read more

Day 47: Piraeus Again, we had a late start, and I woke up feeling even worse! I’m convinced that at first I was feeling sick because of the moldy, dampness in my new room (which really scares me because I don’t want to be sick from the disgusting room!), and then I woke up this morning feeling worse because NOW I was sick and caught what everyone else had. This morning I took another pill, and we went to Flo Café, which is a big chain that apparently charges almost 5 EU for simple yellow label tea, for breakfast. I had a hot water (which turns out is free and best for a cold), and a giant cheese pie that wasn’t too expensive either and was really yummy! After that we went to the grocery store ... read more

Day 46: Gioria’s and Shopping in Athens We were all pretty worn down, and decided to sleep in till 9am. We got up, I took a shower after Neil and Jenn, then we all went to the Carrefour grocery store to pick up breakfast. After that, having packed our Greek language books and laptops in our bags, we went out to meet Gioria in her neighborhood. We got off the tram at about 10:15am and met up with her, and she walked us down streets that lead up to her parent’s house. We met her parents; her mom was just about to head out and her dad and brother were busy working in the yard. She lead us inside and boy was it nice! It was super artsy and eclectic, we can definitely tell where she ... read more

Day 45: Trip to Athens It was the last dig day for this week; which meant the last day for waking up at 6:30am, and leaving for the dig at 7:30. At the site we finished removing the interior of our baby burial, and I started to help out my trench again with rock articulation and startling to level-out our trench. The day went by pretty fast, and we left just before 1pm. We were suppose to get back to the apartments at 1:30pm, but there was a car not quite properly parked along the side of the road, and so even Vasilis couldn’t maneuver us out of the tight space. Instead, while Geoffrey left the bus to try and find the driver, Neil took a group of guys from our bus and rocked the car ... read more

Day 44: St. Jerasimos Day I got up at 7:30am, took my first shower in our new bathroom (and since Lisa slept over at Jerry’s) I could take my time. Just before 8am I skyped my boyfriend and got ready for the day. Isabelle and Jenn came over for breakfast, bringing their own food, so we could eat together, and then we headed down to the bus at the docks for 9:30am. We left for the Monasteries, where the remains of Saint Jerasimos is kept; he’s moved from the new to the old church (that is above the cave he lived in when he was alive) last night, and then this morning he was moved back from the old church to the new one. When we arrived, it was about 10 minutes before 11am. We walked ... read more

Day 43 This morning I got up at 7:30am and skyped with my boyfriend. At 8:30 he went to bed and I got ready to meet Isabelle for 9am. We headed down to Panteli’s for breakfast and met Neil there. He booked our hostel in Athens and Isabelle and I got some food; we had sunnyside up eggs with Kefalonian sausage and bacon. It was delicious and Panteli’s mother served us and gave us free toast and even gave us discounts on the food. She’s so nice! We then ventured up to the classroom with Neil, our prof caught up with us, and then we started pottery washing in class. We ended at about 1:15pm, I rushed to the bank to change big bills into smaller ones and then met back at Neil’s at 1:30pm for ... read more

Day 42 Today was a sleep in and rain day again, and I got up at 9am. I got some breakfast together, cleaned out more of my apartment and then Isabelle came down to my place to walk to class. We got there just past 10am and then our prof started class. We washed pottery and pithos till 1pm, then Lisa and I came back and started to get all our stuff together to move. Jenn and Liana came back to the apartments soon after and started with their move too. Isabelle helped us to bring everything upstairs. Now we’re living on her floor, just by the steps so it’s still convenient even in the rain. At 2pm Neil invited us over for lunch leftovers at his place. We ate up the rest of the baked ... read more

Day 41 (Sunday, October 17, 2010) I got up at about 9am, it was pouring rain again so I knew that our run was called off. I got some breakfast ready, started updating my blog, and Isabelle came down around 10am. She brought down some tea and cookies and we finished watching ‘Madagascar 2’, that we started yesterday as we mashed the yams. She left for a nap close to 11am, I finished my blogging for the day, and I filled out my Field School midterm review. Neil and Gioria came by close to 12noon, they invited a few of us over for dinner tonight, and they thanked me for doing the dishes. They went to go invite others to dinner, and came back down with Isabelle. They grabbed their dishes, cutlery and cups and told ... read more

Day 40: Thanksgiving This morning I got up at 9:30am. It was pouring rain outside and so I knew that our run was called off. Instead, I got up, got some breakfast together and skyped with my sister as I ate and she took a break from studying. At about 10:30 I went up to Isabelle’s room to see if she was awake, but she wasn’t so I came back downstairs and just skyped with my boyfriend until he went to bed. Isabelle joined me half way through and when we were both done with the internet, we went out to get an onion for Lisa’s dish, and baking trays for the yams we were going to make for our Canadian Thanksgiving feast tonight. When we got back from the store it was about 1:40pm and ... read more

Day 39: Sami This morning I got up at 7:30am again and skyped with my boyfriend until 8:30, when I went out for a run with Isabelle, Steph and Jenn. We went for about half an hour and headed back to take showers, prep for our field trip to Sami and I did some laundry since today was promising to be a sunny and cool day (the sun helps to dry out the clothes and rather than being damp out the cool crisp air prevents the moldy mildew smell in our clothes). At 9:55am Isabelle came down and we walked down to the docks where Vasilis was waiting with Gioria. Once we were all accounted for, Zach being the last to arrive as usual and had to be individually escorted down by Neil, we drove down ... read more
