The prefecture of Hania seemed to have some magnetic presence. It didn't want to let us go. We had already spent 5 of our 11 days. Determined to break Hania's hold, we took to the highway heading east. But highway driving was boring and we longed for those heart-warming little villages. We detoured thru Armeni and on thru Agia Pantes before arriving at Vrisses. The main attraction here should have been the rivers Voutakas and Vrysanos which flowed thru the center but these were now disappointing streams and stagnant puddles. But there was a good ambiance and fabulous shade from giant trees and so we grabbed a yoghurt and honey before pushing on. Kourna Lake was next - a large, overrated and highly commercialized body of fresh water. Hawkers touted pedal boats promising sights of turtles. ... read more

It made perfect sense, from any angle. Renting a car, that is. Yesterday's adventure to and from Samaria Gorge had collectively cost us €32 in transportation alone. And that was just about the daily rental price. Plus, it would be impossible to do Crete justice by public transportation because of its size and topography And so, into our lives came IEK-2400 - a fiesty little silver Opel Corsa. And, right then and there, our Crete experience morphed into a totally unique and unexpected affair. Besides holding the record for smoking the most cigarettes of any EU country, Greece also chalks up the most annual road fatalities. It was easy to see why. Impatient Greeks drove too close for comfort forcing us to the shoulder of the road and then executing insane overtakes around corners and downhill. ... read more

Hello everyone! This is an update from the Greek part of our excursion. Greece is wonderful... well parts of it I guess I should say. We are spending our last night together, us three girls.. sob sob... on the wonderful island of Crete (Krete... pronounced Kreta with a wonderful Cretian accent of course). It honestly is our favorite place so far, probably because we picked the most beautiful beach in the world to stay at... I'll get to that later because our Greek adventure did not start on Crete. No no... it started in the "lovely" city of Athens. Oh, Athens... where to start. For those of you who have been to Athens you may have an idea why I say it that way. Bascially, if you've ever thought about going to Athens.. dont! Again, just ... read more

"They" (does anybody really know them?) say that first impressions are lasting. And we subscribed to that theory. So when this little uninhabited dry, barren and blasted rock crept on the right side of the Transavia plane, we almost freaked. The island had a reddish color and not a single tree. Now, having just come from cold Holland, we surely would appreciate some warmth and sunshine but never did we envisage a place so hot that you could see the vapours ripple from above. The pilot landed just past the uninhabited island and the flight attendant (to be politically correct) threw open the doors. We stepped out to face Niko Kazantzakis Heraklion Airport and a super-heated blast of wind. Crete welcomed us warmly. The largest and most populous island of the Greek archipelago, Crete brims with ... read more

16 hrs. on the ferry, but at least these seats reclined so it wasn't so bad; I slept a bunch as I finished my book! Part way through it turned too random & I wouldn't recommend it. I'm going to try & find an English version of Time magazine or something like that. Back to the ferry, boarded at 2 AM even though it didn't depart until 430 AM. About 3, not a nightmare, but reality when about 50, looked to be 9th graders, from France entered with teachers in tow shushing them all way. It took one of the ships crew in uniform to issue a commanding shush for quiet to be restored. So we all slept together, and then about 7 Am, they all left (yes, we were docked at an island when ... read more

Well this is my second to last day on the big island of creta! It truley the nicest place. Beaches within walking distance no matter where you are. The people are kind of crazy but thats okay lol. Anyways i figure id post some pics of the greek waters ive been living at. Ive been drinking alot of wine out here.. i am gaining my apetite right up again. From travelling alone so fast i learned how to pretty much starve myself. Anyways, greece was very pleasent, i got to be with my aunts best friend (my "aunt" angie) and her two kids Konstandino and Helena. I helped her out at the beach bar she works out in the village, Kalimaki. The village she lives in is called Makris Tehos (mackree te-hoe). Today is the ... read more
