Last day of the three-day event. New schedule. Jackie to pick up Mariah, David, Johnny and Wil at the house at noon. Didn’t seem a need to be there so early. And everyone was beat. Long days plus heat and humidity = drained and potentially cranky people. Lee and I slept late too back at the site. More people today. More audience participation in the intertribal and round dances. The busload from Athens waited for everyone to dress for pictures. First just us, and then everyone from Athens got into the picture. Very cute. It was the best day of the three. Mariah and I sang backup for Johnny, some of us joined in with vocables on a couple of songs. Our snake dances got longer and longer as people threw off shyness and joined ... read more

Same thing, different day. A sweet Greek woman, Vassi, appeared in our life and took over selling at our booth. And could she sell!!! I still ran back and forth from booth to sing or dance, but it was sure a relief to have someone attending our merchandise. Lunch again at the restaurant across the street. Many trips to the park concession stand for our frappes. Hot. Humid. More ebbing and flowing of people. Sunset and more people show up. We see familiar faces from yesterday. A busload from Athens is rumored to be on its way. The vendors shop at each other’s booths. Lots of picture taking by the participants as well as the festival attendees. I’m learning how to negotiate the square ceramic thingie bolted to the floor of our park-provided special washroom facilities. ... read more

Drove into town. Veria. Stopped by Demetri’s shop, “Ethnic Arts.” Cool stuff. Awesome clothes (for tiny people) and textiles from Nepal or places around there. Greece has really awesome clothes for women, tiny women, but I love the styles. Nothing I can wear. After a big sigh and a second of pouting, I was over it. I focused on items that were manufactured for other things -- home and personal accessories. That was fun. All of us spent some time in the shop -- some spent time and money, but who and what escapes me now. The drum was set up in front of the shop. We sang and distributed fliers for the coming weekend’s event. Moving to the central square, Mariah and I oogled over the fabulous shoes and ladies fashions that are popular ... read more

We find out that although labeled as a pow wow, this event is not what we consider a pow wow. So, I’ll call it a “cultural festival.” There are five vendors: Lee and I (Sacred Grounds Trading Post), Ethnic Arts, Tdom Bah, George and wife from Athens and Merrick and Agnesta from Poland. We all have diverse items for sale. Johnny also has his cds for sale. The heat is relentless. Hot and humid, humid and hot. I know the guys are uncomfortable in their regalia. The crowd is like the tide -- ebbing and flowing. Not too many people show up during the day -- it is a work day and no one seems to venture out until the sun sets. We drum and sing, Johnny plays his guitar and tries to find songs ... read more

Road trip! On our way to Mt. Olympus, birth place of 12 of the “more important gods and goddesses” of ancient Greece. Not sure about the others, but I had envisioned a place of stark beauty, craggy sides of a single mountain, a vehicle road to the top, where we would all get out of the van. There would stand a partially crumbled altar where modern pilgrims still left offerings, even a stray bar of chocolate. Obviously I didn’t research Mt. Olympus before going up there; my fantasy was not even close to reality. It’s in a range of mountains (I need to look up the name of that range of mountains.) I’m not sure we even saw Mt. Olympus; no big red arrow pointed the way. There was a vehicle road to a small ... read more

Tuesday - Veria We settled in and trashed the house. Didn’t mean to, but we have soooo many suitcases. Regalia takes up at least one suitcase! Poor things. Our crap is everywhere and we’re too tired to be organized. Sophia made us lunch, and we were very grateful. Showers were a necessity -- 24 hours in a car, shoulder to shoulder, no air conditioning (did I tell you it’s hot?) -- we were overdue! Demetrius took Johnny and I to the local market to pick up some snack food (we are learning to hoard food) and breakfast items. We are always on the lookout for water, no gas, but it appears Greeks aren’t as dedicated to mineral water with bubbles as are the Germans. We ate a late lunch -- I think we snacked for dinner. ... read more
