From Amsterdam we worked our way down to Germany's castle-studded Rhineland. Along the way, we'll stop in Arnhem to visit the Netherland's first and largest open-air museum. This morning, after a yummy breakfast at the Hotel Kranenturm we'll take a walking tour of Bacharach. Then we'll head to St. Goar and hike up to the mighty Rheinfels castle, overlooking the Rhine. We'll tour the castle and cruise the Rhine. ... read more

I was there for a week on business during that crazy hot summer, August 2003. We were doing a joint development of an amplifier system inside a Kathrein Antenna and I was there for some inter-company training. We had a couple of down days from weekend stayovers, so we got the lower airfare and took one for the team ;)... read more

Ich bin ein Berliner -JFK, 1963. (A famous speech: ‘I am a jelly donut’ by President John F. Kennedy while visiting Berlin in 1963. We’re pretty sure what he meant was ‘I am a Berliner’, referring to a person from Berlin. ‘Berliner’ is a German word for ‘jelly donut’.) Wednesday, August 6, 2003 Berlin, Germany: a surviving city Brandenburger Tor, or the Brandenburg Gate, is no doubt an ideal place to start our Berlin adventure. This gate has etched many significant Berliner (and thus, German) events since its completion in 1791 by the Prussian Emperor. Or if you will, it served as the ‘triumphal arch’ of notorious Nazi Regime that chose Berlin as its headquarters in late 1930s and early 1940s. Ironically, beautiful stretch of Straße Unter den Linden that terminates at the gate reminds me ... read more

Sunday, August 3, 2003 - Munich, Germany Crossing many European countries for the past couple months, I came into a conclusion that German is one of the hardest languages to speak and to hear, let alone to learn. A couple years ago in high school, I was interested in learning the language, but unfortunately it didn’t take more than one semester before I had it enough. Trying not to act as a rude tourist, I usually approach locals with a polite ‘Sprechen Sie englisch?’, or ‘Do you speak English’ question, hoping to hear a ‘Ja’ then proceeding into an English conversation to ask a question. In some occasions, they would look at me in a puzzled look, and say more like, ‘Kein Deutch?’, which a good indication for me to just smile and nod, while stepping ... read more

In the summer of 2003 I spent 2 weeks doing voluntary work at Sachsenhausen concentration camp. I had been struggling to decide what to do that summer, but I knew I wanted to do something different, and something positive. When I saw this chance to volunteer at a former concentration camp, it felt like the best idea so far. And so at the end of July I got a cheap Ryanair flight over to Berlin and spent the night there in the excellent Circus hostel. I went out for some cheap food and got an early night ready for my big adventure starting the next day. The following morning I got up early, found an S-Bahn station and headed northwards, for Oranienburg. This is a small town just above Berlin. It is nice enough, with some ... read more

Our flight to Cape Town from Phoenix had a 12 hour layover in Frankfurt - pretty much from 9am to 9pm so we went out on the Metro to take a look at the city. We didn't find too much to interest our jet-lagged brains, the museum was closed and that was probably a blessing unless they had very comfy furniture. We walked across the river and sat down in a church for a while until some Germans (in Frankfurt - imagine that) told us that the church was closed and the front door was only open to let the builders in. We dragged ourselves out and back across the river where we found a nice cafe for some lunch. Pretty tired we headed back to the airport and slept for a while. The nice people ... read more
