Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Cologne April 3rd 2007

Geo: 50.8696, 7.276Today I spent the day in Cologne. The first thing I noticed as the train came into Cologne was the huge twin spires of the cathedral. The Dom (cathedral) is the largest in Germany. It started to be built in 1248, funds ran out and building stopped for 300 years. Then it was completed. Luckily the cathedral was one of the buildings to avoid the bombing raids of WW II. I was feeling active, so I climbed the 509 steps of the Dom's south tower. Half way up I had a break and walked around the 24 tonne Peter Bell, the largest working bell in the world. I had then nearly reached the top, ahead of me was a metal staircase in the middle of the tower. It was at about this point as ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin April 2nd 2007

Sunday April 1 After a drive just over 2 hours, we dropped off our rental car, and took the shuttle to Terminal1 at Heathrow airport. We checked in at the Premium check in area, and then passed through the very strict security and went to the British Airways Terraces lounge. It was large and busy, but well designed to still have enough of a feeling of privacy. Our flight to Berlin was delayed 30 minutes. We boarded the Airbus A319-200, and had a long taxi to the runway, then a short wait for take off. Heathrow is a very busy Airport. The crew served dinner, a delicious Chicken Salad, hot bread rolls, and for Dessert a yummy White Chocolate Cheese Cake. The wine was a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The flight was 1 hour 45 ... read more

... read more

Well Friday night we went to a birthday party here in her Village for a girl named Christine. It was kind of a yay for holidays party too. It was with everyone from her grade becuase it was in a hall, so all they girls were there and it was alot of fun. OH! Photos Galore Europe » Germany » Frankfurt By SwestApril 2nd 2007 Hi Everyone..... Gutentag!!! Having a great time here in Frankfurt. Yesterday we went to an exhibition of Op Art (which is optical illusion art)... it was very trippy and I ended up with a headache afterwards, but it was great. Last night we went to a traditional German restaurant and ate some very traditional food. It too was great. The Apple Cider wine was good too... and very warming.. though tonight we are having beer in steins (to celebrate Emily's birthday). Today it was the Bourse stock exchange... brilliant! I will write more when I get back from the FAZ financial newspaper headquarters this afternoon, but to tired y... read more

Ihr hört bald vom Rafa, que lo pasen bien, chicos :-) Silke... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Bonn April 2nd 2007

Geo: 50.6437, 7.55194Today was one of those really fun days in Europe when everything is closed!!! Did a day trip to Bonn, less than an hour by train. Bonn well known for being the birthplace of Beethoven. The centre of town consisted of pedestrian only streets, making easy for me to look at the old buildings in the city squares without having to worry about traffic. Due to it being Monday, there wasn't much to do, so I went to see Beethoven's house/museum. It was an old house. Inside I saw musical instruments, letters, music and paintings. There was also his last grand piano, which wasn't that grand in size at all. Saw his huge ear trumpets that he used to help him when he was becoming deaf and the books that he wrote in to ... read more
